I read the Seth Godin blog on a daily basis and was finally inspired to come over to squidoo to 'check it out.' What an amazing tool!

Anyway, my hope here is to help provide other webmasters some inspiration on search engine marketing. I have been an online marketer going on eleven years, I love what I do and I love watching the success of the small businesses that I have helped.

Getting Found & Flash Web Sites. 

Buildboards In The Desert.

So you had your cousin's roommates best friends sister's plumber's wife design your company's web site. You drop the big coin on this new and breathtaking design with the hopes of generating a tremendous amount of revenue and hype regarding your company. Weeks go by after the flash driven site is live and nothing is happening. No comments, no feedback, no sales, no phone calls, not even a twitter.

Your web site has fallen victim to a Flash crime. The web site is built entirely in flash and has NO visible content to the search engines! The Great Google Bot cannot find any useful information and has NO clue on how to categorize or index your web site. Unfortunatley, your eye candy will be hurting your business more than it will be helping.

There is nothing wrong with using Flash. There is something wrong with using ALL flash. Until ALL search engines can read flash and index it, the best practice is to concern yourself with Form & Function when desiging or having your web site designed.

Text links help a search engine's 'bot' crawl your pages.

The adage the more the merrier is relevant to search engine marketing and web design as well: The more UNIQUE content pages that you generate and feed to the search engines, the higher the probability of ranking well on that particular topic.

How do you let the search engines know about your newly created genius content? Linking to the article off of an indexed and well ranked page in Google can often times help to get that article indexed more quickly. If Google has been visiting your site regularly, it should be able to pick up the new content quickly. Also, add the article to your XML site map feed and your html site map!

Remember, search engines do not follow graphical navigation.

Is your web site missing something?

How would you prefer your prospects to get in touch with you? Is it an email? Online form? Doubtful. If you are like me, you want to speak to a live human being and ask those crucial questions that perhaps the web site in question doesn't provide.

It's simple : A PHONE CALL! I've never closed a search engine marketing deal or new web site design utilizing just email. Get me a phone call, and BAM, done deal, closed or at least in dialogue. Why is it that so many web sites bury their phone number? Should you have to click through 17 pages to get that number? Nope. Here's a tip: (and web designers hate it when I mandate this:) PUT YOUR PHONE NUMBER on every page of your site: in the top or someplace conspicuous. Don't make your prospects jump through hoops!

Search Engine Keyword Selection 

On Finding Your Niche

When ever we get a new customer and have them fill out our search engine marketing keyword sheet, the customer will come up with 3 thousand plus keywords which they wish us to incorporate into our seo work: We instantly take that list and start checking out the relevance of those keywords and how they pertain to their product or service, often, we find that these keywords are not searched for, or are NOT relevant to their products and services.

Here is my philosophy: Go for Targeted niche keywords: For example, if you sell aquarium fish, try to drill down to the specific type of fish that you sell or specialize in on your site: Beta Fish : Gold Fish, Damsel Fish, etc. The goal with search engine marketing should be Quality, not quantity.

Many folks get very excited when they launch that shiny new website, expecting droves of people to come and purchase their wares. Here's the fact: If you don't tell people about your site, it doesn't magically get it the top ten rankings in Google, especially not instantly.

Your site needs TLC: it needs search engine optimization which includes (but is not limited to:) Meta tags with clear targeted keywords for your products or services, optimized copy on your site, clear text links to take the spiders through your site and most importantly, basic marketing. Getting your site listed in Google is the first step, Google prefers to find your site on it's own, so try and get a few reciprocal links from strong, highly ranked reputable site.

Patience pays off in this arena: Search Engine Marketing is a on going process and requires that you maintain your site with fresh, relevant and original copy. Feed the 'spiders' and you will be rewarded. more later.....

Call it what it is

One of the most common mistakes people make when creating a new site is to name the actual page titles http://www.yoursite.com/product1.htm rather than something specific to the product content: like http://www.yoursite.com/acme-widget. Calling the link what it truly is adds a bit of relevance to google results.

Google recently updated it's US algorithm to include not only traditional web site links in it's index, but also images, videos, blogs, news, books and local search. This is an amazing new challenge for web marketers: SEO is not enough anymore! This will truly seperate the rich content sites from the lame ducks: Google is constantly striving to improve it's online search experience and it has done it.

Here is the challenge: Rather than just focusing on traditional methods of SEO: marketers now need to focus on internet marketing on a broad basis : Contribute to a blog, put out relevant press releases online, etc. Now is the time to understand that it is about the end user of your site.

So many folks go out and hire a web designer to produce the eye candy that they think they need for a successful company or online presence. The real truth to the matter is: Your web site needs to sell! It is like a two year old, needing tender loving care and attention, needs to be nurtured.

If your web designer's eyes glaze over when you start asking about search engine marketing or calls to action or very basic marketing principles, it's time to seriously reconsider your web design firm. Make certain that your web designer 'gets it'. Ask about calls to action, conversion, and web 2.0 elements that will PULL in the target audience.

So, imagine you are a doctor. You've spent 20 bagillion dollars on your degree to learn big medical words and terms. You need a web site: so you contract a local web design firm to help you build your site. The web design firm asks you for your list of keywords that are relevant to your industry: you name every medical term known to man kind.

The fundamental problem is that the typical average person searching for medical advice may not know what a streptococyl infection in the arterior artery, blah blah blah. One of the keys to internet marketing is knowing your market and further, what that market types into the search engines to find your business. It's great to rank on obscure niche terms, but it's better to rank on terms of 'the people'.

Poor Backlink Building Tactics 

Posting on blogs for internet marketing.

There is no doubt that in internet marketing and seo in particular, backlinks are a vital part of the equation for success. However, getting backlinks needs to be done with a sense of ethics..... Going to irrelevant areas and posting senseless comments on other's blogs is REALLY NOT the way to do it.

If you do see a blog with excellent content that is RELEVANT to your field and can speak with some authority about the content at hand, then YES, by all means, offer your two cents.
