Birth Records as a tool to find long-lost relatives and ancestors

Genealogy can be a fascinating hobby, but it is time consuming. Talking to living relatives about their family is the usual starting point - but what then? Birth Records offer good leads to family connections. This lens will offer help as you research relatives or ancestors through birth record searches.

About Birth Records

Birth records, marriage and death records are three of the most important records for genealogical research. Collectively, they are known as vital records.

Western European countries began recording commoner births in the sixteenth century. (Royal vital records are better documented.) Parish churches usually held these records before they were moved to County Archives.

In the United States, birth records began to be kept by civil government in the eighteenth century. In most states in the United States, records are kept at county level, although in some areas these records are the responsibility of the city or town. In Louisiana, birth records are kept at the parish level. In many states, state offices retain duplicate copies of births records.

Privacy laws may make accessing birth records difficult; you may need to prove a relationship if you are require the birth record of a relative or ancestor.

First steps to researching relatives and ancestors

Buy a Genealogy Record book or software which allows family tree data to be entered according to the relationship to yourself.

Write up all the information you can gather from living relatives. Weddings are a good place to 'interview' your less accessible relatives and family friends.

Check family documents such as birth, death and marriage certificates and other similar records.

Wills and military records can also be a valuable source of background information. Some family members may also have kept old letters, diaries or even wedding invitation lists which may also provide valuable clues to family members.

Much information is accessible via the Internet but much more will be stored in libraries, record offices or family history centres. Here you can access information on births, adoptions, marriages and deaths as well as census data and emigration and immigration information.

Join a society. Many family historians join both their local society and one or more societies in the areas where their ancestors lived, which can help you with your research in various ways and help you to contact others who are tracing the same family as you.
