Getting Started: Planning for School
FAFSA, Scholarship Myths, and Other Government Grants
Start SoonIts never too early to pay for college. Parents can start saving for college in a special savings account that can be used for tuition, tax-free.
Scholarship Myths
Scholarships can be found at any age, there are even contests available for middle school and younger high school students. You don't necessarily need a top-notch GPA, and financial aid isn't necessarily based on family income. Read more about these scholarship myths before you give up and convince yourself that you can't get any help.
FAFSA and Financial Aid
The latest a college student should start working on paying for school is in January of his/her senior year. At the first of the year, FAFSA applications become available at the U.S. government education website.
Even if you don't think you'll qualify for financial aid due to family income, its worthwhile to file the FAFSA and save your Student Aid Report (SAR). Some scholarships may be available from your college/university, and they may use different income requirements than the federal government.

Find Free Money for College
Search for Scholarships OnlineThe internet makes finding scholarships easy. Without database-matching technology, the information would be scattered across thousands of businesses, charities, government organizations, and schools. Millions of scholarships are awarded each year, how are you going to find the ones that you are individually eligible for?
When you search scholarships and grants online, it really speeds up the process by matching your personal profile to an up-to-date database of potential awards and financial aid. Don't waste time researching scholarships you can't qualify for, fill out a few short forms and see exactly the ones you are eligible to win! There are people who want to give students just like you free money for college. The trick is finding them!
Apply for Institutional Financial Aid
Many colleges and universities offer financial aid to their students to help offset the costs. Many times, these awards can be based on financial need, grades, hobbies, athletics, or other unusual scholarships criteria.
Other Government Grants
Many state governments offer grant programs for resident students. Information about these awards can be found at state education websites or online scholarship search engines.

Finding your school, finding scholarships
Choosing a SchoolSoon after the FAFSA is available, college application deadlines are due. There are a lot of things to consider when choosing a school. Does it have the program you want to major in? Is that program highly rated? Will you be able to live at home, in the dorms, or will you need off-campus housing? No school is going to have every single thing you want, so this choice is a matter of trade-offs and ranking your preferences in order of importance.
Consider Work-Study
If you have bills left over, consider finding an on-campus job (or any job really) to help with the gap. Your schools' financial aid department may know some openings, or they could at least direct you the office that handles student employment. They pay rate may not be great, but they usually offer short schedules that are flexible with class times.
Student Loans and Credit Cards: A Last Resort
Sometimes the financials just don't add up. For these times, proper use of credit can be a lifesaver.
Student Credit CardsCollege is a time of many unexpected costs and financial stress.
A student credit card can help get you through those tough times, and when used responsibly, can help students build credit history. Be careful though! Credit cards have to be paid back with typically high rates of interest. They are great for complete emergencies or as long as you're paying off your monthly balance before interest comes due, but if you start to get behind on payments it can be a nightmare! Remember that credit is a tool when used properly, and not a source of "free money." Its not good to pile up school costs on a credit card, because you can probably get a cheaper interest rate on student loans.
Student Loans
As tuition prices keep rising, student loans are becoming an increasingly significant portion of paying for school. With enough scholarships and grants, it may be possible to avoid student debt completely. Sometimes, unfortunately, it just isn't possible.
You should use the same approach to finding student loans that you use to find scholarships: Online database matching. Each student loan company is going to give a great speech and try to sell you on their plan, but its best to go to a third party and search student loans online.
Student loans should be a last resort for funding college, but its a good back-up plan if nothing else works out.
