Seashell Decor - For Lovers Of All Things Seashells !

One of the most fascinating things to do - in my honest opinion - is to go for a walk along the beach and look for "treasures". Have you ever been to the beach just for a walk? Well, if you have, you know how compelling it can be to look for what the sea has left behind. You can find all sorts of things!

Seashells washed up on the beach have something magical. They can cast a spell and entice you to collect the ones you find most beautiful and take them home.

As lovers of the beach and its treasures it is only natural that we want to take a part of it into our homes, to prolong the feeling that being on the beach evokes in us. Why not deck out some rooms with seashell decor? There are so many things you can do with the seashells you collect, and there are plenty of gorgeous decor items to buy to make our homes look and feel like we are on vacation by the sea shore.

So let's explore, shall we?

Seashell Crafts - Take 1

Let your imagination run wild - create a lasting treasure!

There are so many craft ideas about what you can do with seashells, the list is literally endless. And the good part is, even if you are not artistic and never have done any crafty stuff in your life, you will be able to create something unique and special.

Have a look at the photo with the seashell picture in it - that picture was actually created by my parents, with seashells they found here in Perth while they were visiting from Germany last year. I was stunned when they sent me photos of what they had done with these little shells - I mean, I know my parents, and they are both not crafty AT ALL - and I mean that when I say it!! All they did was glue the shells into this white paste on a cardboard, and then they took it to a framing place to have it framed (granted, that can cost a bit of money, but isn't it worth it?).

Or even if you "only" take a nice glass bowl or jar, fill it with a little bit of sand from your local beach (or from your last holiday), and scatter some of your seashell collections on it. If you want to (and if it's safe! ;) ), put a nice candle in the middle - voila! Sometimes the simplest things make the best displays.

Here is another one - one that I did a few years back after a holiday around Melbourne, with a very dear girlfriend from Germany, so it holds a lot of sentimental value... I had collected the shells on a beautiful beach in Wilsons Promontory, and decided to make a (very rustic!) mirror out of them. I think it looks ok, don't you? If you go to your nearest home improvement store (here in Australia it is Bunnings, for example), they have sections with craft items, have a browse and see what you can put to use with your seashells.

There are so many shops around selling decor for the home, go and have a look what you can find for inspiration, get some ideas! And then there are some great books just on decorating with seashells, if you are still stuck for ideas...

The Seashell Toilet Seat

Make your next trip to the bathroom a trip to the beach!

Don't you think many toilets look a bit drab and crappy (no pun intended...)? Like that's all what they are there for? Good thing that it doesn't have to stay that way - have a look at these fantastic seashell toilet seats and toilet decor, all with seashells and themed around the beach. I love them, they can transform your whole bathroom in minutes, and I am quite sure that visiting "the loo" will be a much more pleasurable experience if you do it on a seashell toilet seat!

Seashell Crafts - Take 2

For all of you who can't get enough...

Of course we weren't finished with the few ideas in the first module! Let's have a look at another few seashell craft ideas.

Did you know that you can actually create great artwork from seashells even if you don't have any "real life" specimens? I am talking about simply drawing or painting pictures of seashells. Granted, it's good if you can draw or paint a little. So if you can, why not grab a book from the library (or from here ;) ) and look for a great picture of a seashell, and get into painting! Like I have done in this pastel drawing...You need to make sure that you get a really good frame for it, and I promise that it will look great even if you are not a Picasso!

Have you ever thought about turning the pretty little shells you find at the beach into fridge magnets? Go and buy some little magnets from your nearest craft store, glue them to the shell and voila! A great "authentic" and stylish fridge magnet.

Or what about buying plain pillar candles (they are quite cheap), - white, light blue or sandy colors will look especially fresh and "seabreezy". Now glue the shells around the bottom of the candle by melting a spot on the candle with the tip of a hot glue gun and pressing the shell into it. Once the wax has set, the shell will be stuck to the candle. You can glue shells all around the bottom of the candle. After, maybe tie a nice ribbon around the candle, and it will look fantastic!
Make sure to check out "How to make a seashell candle" on ehow.com; I found they have some great ideas if you are a fan of candles, shells and the beach!

You can get your inspiration from all around you. I have found interesting craft ideas just by strolling through home decor stores and looking around for things I like, and then changing them to suit seashell craft. Be creative, it is so much fun, and the results can surprise yourself!

Large Seashells

If you are looking for that special display piece....

Sometimes it is not enough to play around with sweet but small seashell pieces. Sometimes you just want to make a statement with a very special piece that captures the essence of the beach.

Large Seashells make absolutely perfect display pieces. They look stunning by themselves in a very special spot reserved just for them. They also elude mystery and tend to be center of attention at least for a short while every time you have guests around! People want to touch them, hold them and, depending on the shell, hold it to their ears and see whether they can hear the ocean.

You have to make sure that there is nothing else to distract from the beauty of the shell you want to highlight. So it's best to not put anything else next to it. Place them on an empty window sill, or an elegant side table. How about reserving a whole shelf somewhere for shells and put a large seashell away from the others in a strategic spot on the same shelf? I am sure you can come up with a good place!

A Variety Of Seashell Decor......

Have a look at what kinds of seashell treasures you can find!

Ebay is a great place to shop for seashell decor. You just don't know what might come up, and you can grab some really good bargains, too. This is a little like "beach combing", and you won't know that you wanted it until you see it. Happy browsing!
