Commonly known as the "Jolly Roger", the skull and crossbones is the definitive symbol of the pirate. Today the black flag with white skull-and-crossbones is the stereotypical image of a pirate flag. However, real pirate flags were much more diverse in appearance, and they varied from individual pirate to pirate. Some well known pirates include: Calico Jack Rackham, Henry Every, and Thomas Tew.

The shape you choose may depend on the size of the design, or the look you are going for. Where will your flag be flying? On a boat...you may want a pennant or burgee. In front of your home or business...you might consider a flag or banner shape.

Keep in mind that lettering will read correctly on one side of the flag, and reverse on the other. This can be avoided by making two separate flags and sewing them together. Again this will be something to take into consideration depending on where you are flying your flag. If it is on a boat a lighter flag may fly better, but if you are in heavy winds a flag with a double layer will be more durable. If your flag will be flying in front of your business you will want people to see it from either side - so reading correctly on both sides would be better.

Most flags are made from 100% UV protected nylon fabric. This is a very durable fabric for outdoor use. There are many colors to choose from - this color chart gives you a small sample of the colors that are available.
