Why "Seattle"? A history primer

Photo of Chief Seattle bust by "coolmel" on Flickr

Although native peoples had lived in villages in the area for thousands of years, Seattle is a relatively young city. The first lasting Euro/white settlement along the densely forested banks of "Elliott Bay" wasn't established until 1851.

The town that grew from those settlements took its name from a tribal elder related to both the Duwamish and Suquamish clans who had villages in the area. He was called "Chief" Seattle by the settlers even though his clans didn't recognize the kind of formal assignment of leadership duties that the word "chief" suggests. His name is sometimes also spelled as "Sealth".

"The different forms arose from the difficulty in catching the guttural pronunciation by the Indians. In addition to the above instances, it may be cited that in 1853, Theodore Winthrop wrote it 'Se-at-tlh.' In 1858, the United States Coast Survey wrote it 'Se-at-tl.' The more euphonious spelling on that first pioneer plat has persisted. The Indians' own name for the place was 'Tzee-tzee-lal-itch,' meaning 'little portage,' and referring to the trail to the large lake -Washington- so much shorter that the circuitous river route."  -- Tacoma Public Library

Pronunciation of local place names, which are often derived from (sometimes misunderstood) native words, is often a tricky task for newcomers and visitors.

Seattle's hour-glass spaped city limits are relatively small and divided into a a number of neighborhoods. (The small map lists all named neighborhoods in each section of the city.)

Flashfink

When I was a kid growing up in Vancouver (B.C., not Washington)I watched a lot of TV from Seattle. I figured any city that has shows like J.P. Patches and Nightmare Theater must be a pretty great place!

We've rearranged things a bit and added a feed from the interesting Seattle Daily Photo site. (Yup, we've noticed that the picture doesn't show up until you visit the site, but are hoping that will change.)
