Arcane Society Book 1 by Amanda Quick
Second Sight by Amanda Quick has been sitting on my bedside table for a couple of weeks. I started to read it several times, but something always stopped me. A friend of mine and fellow Squidoo lensmaster, Elizabeth Jean Allen introduced me to the world of the Arcane Society by recommending Jayne Ann Krentz's White Lies to me, when the latest Nora Roberts wasn't to my liking. I started reading the Arcane Society novels in reverse order, the more recent ones first, then went back to the beginning. That's why I'm just now getting to Second Sight, which is actually the first in the series.
If you like paranormal suspense romantic novels, then you will probably enjoy the Arcane Society books and you might like to join me in reading Second Sight.

According to the blurb, Second Sight is set in Victorian England. The characters include Gabriel Jones, one of the infamous Jones men of the secret paranormal organization, the Arcane Society and Venetia Milton, a photographer with a special way of "seeing" beyond her subjects. The other two high ranking Jones men, Thaddeus Ware and Caleb Jones, are also involved in the mystery. Gabriel and Venetia must pose as husband and wife as they work to track down a dangerous opponent of the Joneses.

I enjoyed Second Sight even though I read the books in reverse order. It was sort of like reading about your grandmother when she was young and finding out many interesting things that you didn't know about her. I especially liked the fact that the Venetia character was such a strong individual who was willing and able to run a successful photography business. It is definitely worth reading and is sure to provide some pleasurable time to escape from the real world.

- After a while I stop thinking about Vortex. I think about Isabella Valdez, instead.

- I sit at the counter for a long time thinking about Vortex. Just what I need, another conspiracy of rogue psychics to worry about.

- Isabella Valdez is a talent of some kind. Very high grade. Another talent in this small town? What are the odds?

- Isabella Valdez is the source of the good energy in the Sunshine. I introduce myself. She pours coffee for me.

- Got a new employee, Marge tells me. Name is Isabella Valdez. New employee comes out of the kitchen. That’s when I know.

- No coffee. I head for the Sunshine Café. I sense the change when I go through the door. Good energy in the Sunshine today.

- I ask what happened to the serial killer. The illusion talent tells me the guy drowned. Right. I don’t ask any more questions.

- Monday morning. Some good news. Illusion talent sees fit to call in. Says I don’t have to worry about the serial killer any more.

- But I make the mistake of turning him over. Look at the back of his shoulder. A small tattoo. Looks like a tornado. Vortex.

- I feel a frisson of intuition. I unbutton Fitch’s shirt. Breathe a sigh of relief when I don’t find any mark on his shoulder.

- I go back down into the vault room. Crouch beside Fitch’s body. I know the authorities will call it natural causes.

- Book is hollowed out. Three small flashlights inside. The crystal guns. Hidden in plain sight.

- There are three shelves of books devoted to crystals. I find one that carries the logo of the Arcane Society. Open it.

- I leave the body on the floor and go upstairs. Hooker stocked a lot of New Age books: Meditation, dream theory, crystals.
