Second Life Clothing Tutorial 101

Basic Clothing Design Templates

Basic clothing can be made using any texture you find in Second Life. Unfortunately, some textures don't look that great on certain bodies. Below are a few links to some templates that will make creating your own textures for clothing a snap!

NOTE: Each of these templates are for the smallest size avatar available. To make simple clothing textures that actually fit on larger shaped avatars you will need to upload a .tga file of the particular body template you want to work with and apply it as a tattoo. Once you have the template on your avatar take several pictures from various angles around your avatar so you can properly tell how the lines end up distorting on the larger shape. This is the only way to eliminate the "Stretching" of textures in Second Life when clothing is worn by larger avatars.

512 based template- Simple, 1-Layer jpg's for uploading and applying to your avatar so you can properly align the clothing texture to your desired shape and size.

All Fashion Design Templates- Simple to use templates for all the various clothing for Second Life avatars.

CMFF Master Templates - High quality Photoshop templates by Chip Midnight, which use multiple layers for better pin-point accuracy.

Hair Template- Hair template for creating your own hair templates in Second Life.

Click here for detailed instructions on how to use these templates to create your own clothing.

No cost way of checking your textures!

Once you've made all the final changes to your clothing texture, save it as 24 bit .tga and open Second Life. At the top of Second Life click File and select Upload an image. From here you can examine your texture "BEFORE" you actually pay to upload it. Using the camera controls, examine every seam of the texture to make sure every thing is straight and lined up properly. If you need to correct something just click cancel. Otherwise, click Ok and upload it. Only when you click Ok will you be charged the upload fees, so if your texture needs changes just click cancel and save your lindens.

Boots and Shoes Made Simple!

Using one of the templates from tutorial 101, open the lower template in your image editor. For shoes simply create your textures over the foot top and bottom areas of the template. For boots you will also need to create textures at the bottom of the legs.

NOTE!!! Take your time and make sure that the texture on the bottom of the legs lines up with the texture in the middle of the foot top area. Otherwise, any lines or other marks will not line up at all. Take a quick look back at Tutorial 102 for a no cost way of checking your clothing before you pay to upload it into Second Life.

How to make clothing textures with transparencies...

Once you have your texture completed you can make it a transparency in Photoshop by selecting the "Magic Wand" tool and clicking any where there isn't a texture. This should select all of the empty area. If so, click Select at the top and then click Select Inverse. This should change the selection to just your textured areas. If so, click Select again then click Save Selection. This will open the Save Selection menu where you can name the selection. Name it and click Ok. Open the Layers menu and click the Channels tab at the top of the menu. You should see your selections name in the list. Click the "Eye" button next to it and your transparency should show up properly. Click the Layers tab again to return to normal editing mode, then save the file as a 32-bit .tga image. Once saved simply upload the texture to Second Life and confirm the transparency is set properly.
