Not Your Father's Secretary of State
"The first woman elected to the Senate was Hattie Wyatt Caraway of Arkansas. Appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her husband, U.S. Senator Thaddeus Caraway, Ms. Caraway then sought and won election on her own in 1932. She was reelected in 1938 and served until 1945."
Well, who knew? I would have thought it was Margaret Chase Smith. Well, there have been lots of female Senators since then, although until recently most of them replaced husbands and many were seat holders who never ran an election.
However, until 1997 when Bill Clinton nominated Madeleine Albright as his Secretary of State, this position was one of many bastions of white males. There has not been a white male since. George Bush nominated two African Americans, a man and a woman and now Barack Obama choose Senator Hillary Clinton. This is arguably the second most powerful position in the world. Will the world ever be the same?

Madeleine Albright, 1997 to 2001
Madeleine Albright was the 64th Secretary of State of the United States of America, and of course, the first woman. Her parents had been Czech Jews who converted to Catholicism to avoid Nazi persecution. This last fact is something she might never have known had she not become Secretary of State.Accomplishments during former Secretary Albright 's tenure included the expansion and modernization of NATO and NATO's successful campaign to reverse ethnic cleansing in Kosovo; the promotion of peace in the Balkans; the reduction of nuclear dangers from Russia; the expansion of democracy in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America; the expansion of our multifaceted relationship with China including trade as well as human rights; and the growth of trade in the Americas, in Africa through the African Growth Opportunity Act, and through the conclusion of hundreds of other agreements that facilitated American business overseas.
As Secretary, Dr. Albright reinforced America's alliances, advocated democracy and human rights, and promoted American trade and business, labor, and environmental standards abroad

Very Much a Man, The First African American Secretary of State. Colin Powell, 2001 to 2004
As Secretary of State in the Bush administration, Powell was perceived as moderate. Powell's great asset was his tremendous popularity among the American people.[citation needed] Powell was unanimously voted in by the United States Senate. Over the course of his tenure he traveled less than any other U.S. "Secretary of State in 30 years.
On September 11, 2001, Powell was in Lima, Peru, meeting with President Alejandro Toledo and US Ambassador to Peru John Hamilton, and attending the special session of the OAS General Assembly that subsequently adopted the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
After September 11, Powell's job became of critical importance in managing America's relationships with foreign countries in order to secure a stable coalition in the War on Terrorism."
Powell is a very disciplined man and we will probably never hear great criticism of George Bush from him. However, from his resignation and who he supports now, he can surmise that his years of carrying out George Bush's International policy were painful for him.
Colin Luther Powell (born April 5, 1937) is an American statesman and a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State (2001-2005), serving under President George W. Bush. He was the first African American appointed to that position. The first African American secretary of state, Colin Powell, The African American RegistryBiographies - Colin Powell: United States Secretary of State, African American History Month, US Department of DefenseColin Powell, Britannica Online EncyclopediaProfile: Colin Powell, BBC News During his military career, Powell also served as National Security Advisor (1987?1989), as Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Army Forces Command (1989) and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989?1993), holding the latter position during the Gulf War. He was the first, and so far the only, African American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Are These Really the Best Times for A Woman Secretary of State?
I have heard people, men and women, suggest that this is not the time for female Secretary's of State. They say that since so many of the countries we have to deal with won't even let women drive, that sending a woman to negotiate is too much of an unnecessary challenge to them.
Part of me thinks, well, good, we should be in their faces about women and women's capabilities. But then I wonder....maybe these people are right!
So as Rachel Maddow says, "Talk Me Down". Tell Me What You Think.

Gender should never have mattered in the past and certainly does not seem to matter now. The best candidate should always be chosen, but in today's world, I believe we are a bit more enlightened and have been able to forge ahead with a more clear perspective.

Yes, It Is A Great (or Terrible) Idea to Have a Woman and Here is Why
Surly-Mac says:
I'd like life better if it didn't matter. The inconvenient reality of the SOS's duty to negotiate with representatives of certain foreign powers means gender might be a serious qualifier for the job. If the USofA continues to recognize countries that treat women as little more than slaves as sovereign equals (I would not), it doesn't follow that ANY female could be the most effective USofA representative. Besides, this answer will balance the poll...

Condoleeza Rice, George Bush's Right Hand Woman, 2004 to 2009

Wikipedia .
"Condoleezza Rice (whose given name is derived from the Italian musical expression, Con dolcezza, which means "with sweetness" " had a stellar career long before she became famous as George Bush's second Secretary of State.
She had an illustrious career at Stanford University rising to provost. Although that was tainted by those who suggested that they chose her because her status as an African American women would help Stanford's reputation, she was highly qualified.
She had been a Republican since her disagreements over Jimmy Carter's foreign policy. In 2000 she was named to the National Security Council and was nicknamed the "Warrior Princess". When Powell resigned she was a natural choice for Secretary of State. She had abilities to carry off the office as well as the politically correct credentials for George Bush's foreign and war policies.
Was This Condoleeza Rice's Greatest Moment?
Condoleezza Rice performs on the piano at Buckingham Palace for Queen Elizabeth II
The outgoing US Secretary of State was accompanied by Louise Miliband, the wife of Foreign Secretary David Miliband, and three members of the London Symphony Orchestra in her performance of Brahms. The stateswoman who is a concert level pianist was allowed to use a music room at the palace after expressing a wish to play for the Queen before leaving office at the end of the Bush administration in January. The Queen listened to part of the performance, and afterward presented Miss Rice with an audio recording of the recital as a gift. Miss Rice started playing the piano as a child and planned a career in music, originally enrolling at university to study the subject before switching to political science. At 15 she performed Mozart's Piano Concerto in D minor with the Denver Symphony Orchestra, as a prize for winning a student competition. She was taught the instrument by her mother, who was a music teacher, and regularly performs private chamber music recitals with four friends, leading to her be described as the world's most prominent amateur musician. Miss Rice was visiting London before heading for Brussels to attend a meeting of Nato leaders. Earlier in the day, she met Gordon Brown and Mr Miliband.--Telegraph

Barack Obama's Rival Turned Ally: Hillary Clinton 2009 to.....

Hillary Clinton has been famous, some would say infamous, since she became First Lady in 1993. She was the first to try to establish policy and law when she headed an ill gated committee to establish a national medical policy. She was the first to run for and win a national office, and certainly the first to run for president. We started by talking about women who took over their husband's Senate seats, but HIllary Clinton was very much running on her own. I believe that if she hadn't been married to him, she might have run decades earlier, on her own.
She has been the most vilified and respected First Ladies. While she is not a divisive person, she has certainly been a lightening rod for people who love or hate her. However, other than the extreme right, there are few who doubt that she will be a stellar Secretary of State. Even her detractors tend to concentrate more on her husband's faults than on any perceived inadequacies of hers.

- Good subject. Time and history will tell about the future of the country as well as the effect recent presidents and other officials have had on it. I admire every honest man and woman who is willing to serve his/her country. I'd like to think that the majority go into public service to actually serve and do their best. Thanks for featuring my Hillary lens, Margo. Very nice job on the lens!

My Bio

For Arrowsmith Printing 9/22/08
I was born into a small business, I believe that small business and entrepreneurs are the backbone of America and what has made us great. They are what made us great and will save us in these unsure times. I have never wanted to have a great job. Well, better a great one, than a boring dead end one, and I have had both. But I have never really wanted a job at all.
Don't get me wrong, I am a hard worker. I have worked a full-time job, a part time job and a private practice all at the same time for a lot of years in my past. It isn't the work, its the working for someone else. Never wanted to do that, and I don't understand those who want to do that.
When I was six months old my parents bought their first small town weekly newspaper in Iowa. This was back in the day, back when small town newspapers were not just advertising sheets. Perhaps there are still some of them that are real, I hope so.
So I came by this perverse nature naturally. My path to self employment has been different than theirs, but it has always been my path, my direction.
Growing up in Iowa, in the fifties, I also grew up politically conservative. By the time I was 30 I was radically left. Today? I am proudly liberal and what that means will be clearer as we progress.
However, I have had conflicts about 'taking advantage of people'. I now know that employing people is not automatically taking advantage of them, but it took a while for me to learn that nothing is intrinsically good or bad. Well, almost nothing.
I have educated myself in business, I have a small business and I have used EFT and other energy clearing methods to help me clarify the old conflicts and move forward.
My mission here is to provide a forum for people who want to work independently through one person businesses or through employing others and for whom the betterment of human kind is an important value. My lenses are about offering good products, teaching people about betting their lives, and using the money they make for their pleasure and the benefit of others.
That is how I see business and if you have a similar vision I invite you to my blog www.creatingbusinessenergy.com
