A guide to help you find the best deals in your area!

What could be better than a good deal? Whether you're looking to save money, looking for a specific project or hobby item, going green by recycling household goods, or just love that fuzzy warm happy feeling of finding that one of a kind treasure, this page can show you how to locate the best deals and bargains in your area.

As an avid bargain hunter, I must admit, I would get quite personal with a dumpster if I knew the perfect "treasure" was hidden within. But since not everyone would like to familiarize themselves with such a thing and has been left wondering if and where such "treasures" exist, I have taken it upon myself to share with you from years or experience, my favorite lairs...

Reduce Reuse Recycle

Just give it another chance!

Now I must say, I do feel hesitant sharing this with you, as I may run across you at one of my regular haunts and find you've taken the treasure of a lifetime, but in all fairness, not only does everyone love a good bargain, but I believe in recycling - and many bargains can be had as a second-hand item. Recycling means to use something again. And to use something again is to give it a second life - so your treasure may need some love and a facelift, or maybe a new purpose, and definitely some cleaning, but with a little imagination and creativity, that old wooden box could become your masterpiece...

Garage, Yard, Estate and Rummage Sales

A garage, yard or moving sale consists of personal household items being sold from ones yard or garage and is hosted by a person, multiple families or a whole street or block. You can find things well priced and over priced. Educate yourself on prices so that you know a good deal when you see one.

An estate sale is usually when someone has died and most of the household items are being sold. This sometimes means they will have the items throughout the house. Look for signs or ask someone in charge before you enter anyones' house! Two common things you will find are the over priced sale; where the host of the sale thinks that everything their parent owned is an antique and over prices it all to make money, and the steal deal sale; where the sale host just wants to get rid of everything.

A rummage sale is generally hosted inside a public building. Proceeds of this type usually go towards a specific agenda - a church missions trip, a school project or outing, etc. These are priced very well - usually because all items have been donated and there is no emotional attachment to these items, as well as all items needing to be gone by the end of the day.

Don't be afraid to barter!

People went through so much work to host their sale - most likely they want to get rid of it all and won't want to haul it back indoors or to a thrift store!

Thrift or Secondhand Stores

A thrift store is the recipient of the community. Donate unused or unwanted items there, and they price it to sell. Larger chain stores will have a higher price range and more selection, where as smaller stores will have great deals, but less selection. These are not open to bartering.

Lending a Helping Hand

Thrift stores often support a worthy cause - whether it's a charity, a school or providing jobs for those with special needs.

Fleamarkets and Swapmeets

Fleamarkets and swapmeets are held indoors or can also be found outside, depending on the area you live in. This consists of booths or tables rented by a vender. Some fleamarkets and swapmeets have a small entrance fee before you are able to peruse all the secondhand or inexpensive wares. Their products range from vintage and antiques to bootlegged movies and knockoff or imitation merchandise to children's clothing and toys.

Auctions

Auctions are a great way to find that one of kind item, ranging from vehicles and homes to furniture, toilets and art! These may be from a liquidating store, a store making room for a new line, seized items by government officials that need to dispose of them, items from forclosure or bankrupcy... Be sure to find out when the viewing time is of items interested - you may also be provided with a catalogue. Register at an auction for a bidding number and raise your number when you want to place a bid. Some auctions have a handling fee tacked onto the final sale, so be sure to get all the information before hand.

Be sure to check out this link for more details on auctions.

Know your stuff

Be sure to fully inspect the pieces you are interested.

You may be competing with dealers in an auction, so set out your maximum price before bidding starts.

Consignment Stores

A consignment store is a secondhand store where you bring your items to be sold, and the store gets a good percentage of the profit. This can be a good place to buy designer items. They are priced higher than thrift stores, but they only accept quality items and have them on shelf for a certain period of time, so they are continually getting new stock and getting rid of old stock. They also have a 50% sale rack as their last hope to sell items before either returning it to the owner or donating it to a thrift store.

You can find a range of consignment stores - from furniture to clothing to baby items. Please no bartering.

Surf for Deals

Craigslist

This is like an online garage sale, where owners and dealers post merchandise for sale. From free items to garage sales, cars to baby bottles, you can find just about anything here! Click on the link above to search for items in your area.

eBay
A household name by now, eBay is an online auction where you bid on new or used items. Shop smart and take a browse - but don't forget to include the cost of shipping when looking for deals.

Freecycle
Search for a Freecycle in your location, or sign up to start one. By joining this Yahoo group, you will get posts of items wanted, offered, or when they've been taken. This group is devoted to recycling and giving unused items a new life and home. With strict guidelines to follow so that this program isn't taken advantage of, you just may find something you've been needing!

Cheapcycle
Click "Messages" on the left, find the search box and type in your town, state or country to look for a cheapcycle group near you. Similar to freecycle, this group is dedicated to recycling, but also lets you make a small buck from it.

Thrifty Lenses

Ideas for your thrifted finds!

Other ways to find a bargain...

Recycle Centres
Some towns have a "Take it or Leave it" or a "Use and Reuse" Recycling Centre. One example is here. This includes an area where you can take or leave gently used items - some even have a "book shed" where you can take or leave some books.

Trash Day
Or Community Spring Cleanup, or Trash or Treasures...whatever your community calls it. As apposed to bringing larger items to the dump, you can place items curbside in wait of the garbage guys and scrap metal guys to come pick them up on designated days of the year. Cruise down some streets and do some real window shopping! Just bring a bungee cord and a friend to help with the treasures you will find!

Dumpsters
Now, I don't mean IN the dumpsters (as in some areas that is illigal), I mean by them. Just keep an eye out behind furniture, fabric and gift stores - you can find some great stuff there!

Retail Stores

Liquidation stores
These stores purchase inventories from packaging changes, discontinued products, excess inventories, companies in financial trouble, etc.

Clearance racks
Good deals are found on last seasons items. Look for clearance racks, or better yet, clearance sales with an additional sale on top of that.

Check & inspect

Liquidated and clearance pieces are quite possibly damaged. Inspect all items closely, as you probably will not be able to return these items.
