Mark Kistler's PBS Drawing Show Inspired Thousands of Today's Artsists!

In 1984 the only art teachers on PBS had afros or accents and painted pine trees and clouds. Prettttty boring to the average 9 year old. Then one day I turned the TV and turned the dial to PBS and there was this goofy guy with a funny mustache and an orange jumpsuit drawing dinosaurs, volcanos, robots, flying saucers, buildings stacked like layer cakes, and impossibly winding roads ala Dr. Suess. I was hooked.

The Secret City: The Greatest Drawing Show Ever!

"Did You Tape Commander Mark, Mom!?!!"

The Secret City was a 65 episode how-to-draw show on PBS in the mid 80s, created and hosted by Mark Kistler. Mark's unique and enthusiastic approach to teaching kids how to draw was already popular with teachers through his school assembly. The success of the Secret City gave Mark the means to produce the Draw Squad series of videos, but I'll never forget that crazy jumpsuit or the giant orange mural wall.

Watch the Secret City

Man, I USED to have ALL of these on VHS. My momma recorded these all for me, which I watched as soon as I got home from school and for hours on end sometimes. They gradually got taped over by things deemed more important, like Superbowls or Club MTV. But thanks to Youtube, you can see some great segments from the show.

If you like these videos, be sure to stop by Mark Kistler's website. He has new improved video lessons and some great books for kids and obsolete children.

That Big Beautiful Orange Wall of Awesome Art!

The Secret City Mural

The last segment of every episode of the secret city was the Secret City Mural, in which Commander Mark adds art to a sprawling cartoon land reminiscent of Dr. Suess. The Mural segment incorporate the art lessons covered earlier in the episode. It probably increased the rate of big kids drawing on their bedroom walls in 1985 by 83%!

5 years old - I got out a pencil and paper, excited to see what I was going to learn to draw. It was Salt and Pepper shakers. I learned to draw many other things, and today I make a living as a graphic artist. Thanks Mark!

I used to watch this in May and June of 1991 at the end of Grade 7 in Winnipeg. I think what I was watching was all re-runs by then, but that was the greatest show around. I had about ten episodes on tape but unfortunately I taped over them in high school. I did try to reproduce part of the mural on paper before I lost those shows forever, though! Awesome to see the intro and hear that song on youtube!

I used to rush home from school to sit on my parents bed with a big sketchbook, a pencil, a sharpie & my handful of highlighters to draw along with Commander Mark everyday. I'm a full time artist now & to this day my art is still totally influenced be what I learned watching this show, I wish it was still on the air where I live...

Mark Kistler is awesome! I missed out on Secret City and Commander Mark, but got in on Imagination Station. I loved that show! Still do! I've got notebooks packed with all my drawings.

I watched Secret City faithfully as a ten-year-old on PBS. In retrospect, I think that Mark Kistler came to my elementary school in Southern California when I was very young, but it was well before I became hooked on the show. It's good to see that he's still active.
