Looking For The Best Security Systems in Houston?
It can be quite a chore to shop for security systems Houston. There are so many alarm companies with so many different offers, that sometimes it all becomes too confusing and you just feel like going with whoever happens to be sitting in front of you at the time.
Well don't despair. As an alarm company owner for almost 10 years now, there is not much that I haven't seen or heard of. Alarm companies come and go in the Houston area. Even the big ones come to town and are gone a couple of years later.
In this lens I am going to cover what the different security companies in the Houston area offer, and where they are coming from. I trust that this will serve to educate you so that you can make an informed decision while shopping for security systems Houston.
Security Systems Houston - How About Those Free Installlations I Keep Hearing About?
If you have looked for a security system in Houston, there is no doubt that you have heard of the $99 or free installation package if you sign up to a 3 year agreement. The basic package will consists of 1 alarm control panel, 1 keypad, 1 motion detector, 2-3 door contacts or activate all pre-wired openings, 1 siren, 1 back-up battery, 1 yard sign and window decals. The monitoring rates range from $24.95/mo - $39.95/mo for new security system installations in the Houston area. This is what we in the security industry call a mass marketed system. This type of package is offered by authorized dealers who are funding their alarm monitoring contracts through a larger company like ADT, Brinks, Protection One, Central Security Group, and others. There is nothing wrong with this business model. Years ago ADT introduced the dealer program as a way of expanding their customer base. The model worked so well, that other major alarm companies followed their lead.
The advantage to the homeowner is that they can have a security system installed for a reduced installation fee, or free, if they agree to a 36 month monitoring agreement. This makes it much more affordable for the average consumer to acquire some form of basic security system in Houston.
The larger alarm company is hoping that you will be happy with the service and that you will stay with them long after the initial agreement. In fact, if the homeowner does not renew, the larger alarm company will not make a profit on the account whatsoever.
You do have to do your homework however because many of the larger companies can have some serious service issues.

Security Systems Houston - So Why do Some Companies Charge an Installation Fee?
Many reputable security companies are not aligned with a larger national alarm funding company. Since these companies do not get their alarm contracts funded by a third party, they have to charge the subscriber up front for the alarm installation and activation. The rates for activation can range from $99 up to $399 and the equipment for the basic install listed above can run anywhere from $299 all the way up to $895.
These companies tend to be a bit smaller, and more responsive to customer service issues. The homeowner can also usually expect a short term agreement, lower monitoring rate, or both by paying for the installation and activation up front.
If you think you might get moved, or need a short term agreement, this is a very good option for most homeowners.
Security Systems Houston - Do I Need a Phone Line?
Most security systems in Houston operate on a standard telephone line by services such as AT&T or Verizon. The rates I referred to up above are based upon the homeowner having a standard phone line.If you have a VOIP phone, many alarm companies will not connect to these type of phone systems. The short explanation is that many times the alarm signal will not get though to the monitoring station with VOIP phones, and the monitoring center does not want the liability. If they do monitor with the VOIP phones, you will most often have to sign a waiver in regards to the VOIP phones.
There are some alternatives to consider though. AT&T has a limited use line that you can get for as little as $8/mo plus all their stupid taxes. I have not heard of this being available through Verizon or Windstream however. You have to ask for it, because they do not just come right out and offer it. Basically you get 20 calls per month with one flat rate.
You can also choose to install a cell unit to transmit the signals, Cell units will cost more per month ($8-$12 typically), and there will be an additional charge for the unit ($99 - $299 depending on quality), but they are a viable alternative.
In my experience, services like Vonage, Magic Jack, etc. are worthless at sending alarm signals in. However, the cable phone services like Comcast and Consolidated Communications have been pretty good. There is an intermittent problem occasionally, but all in all, not too bad.
A side note however. If you are trying to monitor for fire, you absolutely cannot connect your security system up via any type of VOIP phones. This includes the cable phone services. This is mandated by the State Fire Marshal's Office.
Security Systems Houston - Should I Get the Extended Warranty?
A big question while looking for a security system in Houston that comes up is the extended warranty. Is the $5/mo for the additional extended warranty worth it?The answer to this depends largely on the company you are contracting with. Ask about what it costs to have a service call if you should choose to skip on the extended warranty. Many of the alarm companies will have a low monitoring rate, but watch out if you ever have an uncovered service call. Most service calls are in the $65-$90 range and a replacement keypad for example can run anywhere from $80-$149+.
However, with that being said, if an alarm system had a problem, it will usually show within the first 90 days. I don't know of a security company in Houston that doesn't offer a 90 day warranty as standard. Most of the alarms installed today have very few problems. If you don't have a lot of additional devices, you could save a few bucks by skipping the extended warranty.
Many alarm companies include the extended warranty when you sign up for the monitoring service. These companies rates are usually a bit higher to compensate for it, but it is not an option.
Just so you know, extended warranties typically do not cover things like changes in phone service, remodeling, acts of God, back-up batteries, or vandalism.
