You can also look over the beautiful pictures of flowers and vegetables and plan your garden layouts if only in your head. Also you'll find great garden supply catalogs for most of your gardening needs here. I will include toll free phone numbers if they are available. A lot of these catalogs also offer gift certificates, too. And most have e-mail newsletters you can sign up for. I'll be doing reviews on my favorite garden catalogs, but check in often, as I will continue to keep adding more. I put in a few reviews about my favorite garden books also. Just "click" on the book or other garden products in most sections, and that will take you to see the product and get a better description, and you can purchase it from Amazon there. I've also included some videos you might enjoy watching about harvesting seeds and gardening with raised beds and a few others on gardening, including how to start planting seeds indoors. And check out my section on plant hardiness zones. There you can go to several websites and get info on which climates are best suited for growing what plants. Enjoy! PLEASE NOTE: E-bay updates its items at auction daily, so keep checking back for more garden goodies in my E-bay sections! So instead of filling your station wagon, suv, or truck with plants from a few varieties, fill your mailbox with these catalogs with LOTS of varieties of seeds and plants to choose from, and start growing your own! If you have a favorite catalog related to seeds, plants, trees,or garden supplies, let me know about it in the comment box near the bottom and include the website if you know it, so that I can consider including it here on my lens. Happy gardening!

Harris Seeds

My Favorite Seed Source

Harris Seeds is my favorite catalog to order from. They've been around since 1879. I've always had good service with them in the past and their prices are very reasonable. Their seeds perform well for me. It's always a good idea to order your seeds and plants from the part of the country where you will be planting them, although you can order from other parts as well. Harris Seeds is based in Rochester, New York. You can order your seeds, plants, bushes, a few grapes and berries, and a most unusual columnar apple tree, which produces no branches and takes up less space then the traditional apple trees. They also offer many other garden supplies such as: watering wands, water timer, trellis netting, soil tester meter, Jiffy pellets, Jiffy pots, heat mats, plant labels and marking pens, wonderful light stands, growing mix, row covers, plastic mulch, plant protectors, nice shovels and spades, knives, gloves, greenhouses, pest control supplies, gardening tools, garden ready transplants, and even flagpoles! Romanesco Veronicsa Cauliflower

Brassica oleracea Romanesco Veronica

Sweeter and milder than Cauliflower -- and such plate appeal!

Could use this one as a table display!

85 days. Have you tried Romanesco yet? Veronica has lovely lime-green heads topped by tightly-beaded, pointed domes. Excellent raw or cooked, it boasts a milder, sweeter flavor than white Cauliflower, to say nothing of its appetizing visual appeal!

Native to the Mediterranean coast of Italy between Naples and Rome, Romanesco is often called "Italian Cauliflower," and it is a member of the Cauliflower family. Veronica is one of its most spectacular members, with lime-green heads, perfect spiraling, and a crisp, rich flavor that works well fresh or cooked.

Veronica grows vigorously, demonstrating excellent heat tolerance. Best as a fall crop, it should be picked young, when the heads are small, for the ultimate in tender flavor.

Vegetables to Try in Your Garden.

Give these veggies a try in your garden and add some flowers as well.

I first started a little garden of my own when I lived for a short time in Utah, when I was 12 years old. We had a tiny back yard, but I grew some of my very own radishes, and was fascinated with watching them sprout up out of the ground. My very own home-grown veggies! Radishes are wonderful for children to grow, as they germinate so quickly-within days. I always find a space for sweet corn. I love to watch the tiny seed sprout into tall stalks and then cook my very own fresh corn-on-the-cob. Peas growing on a fence are so refreshing to look at, even though they take a lot of room to grow. I do manage to get a few in the garden, although I plant the edible pod kind. Carrots are so much more delicious when they are your own freshly grown ones! I usually grow the Nantes, coreless type, but there are many nice varieties. My favorite winter squash to grow are butternut and acorn. They are superb, either baked or steamed! My favorite summer squash to grow are zucchini and yellow crookneck. Just slice them up and fry in butter, and season with salt and pepper. Most of these fresh grown veggies are delicious with just butter, salt and pepper, or your favorite herbs. Tomatoes are a top home gardeners favorite, and I like to grow a few cherry sized ones as well as medium sized ones for salads and a few beef sized ones for sandwiches. And I ALWAYS grow some cucumbers, both the long slicer kind and the small pickling ones, which I like best in salads. Beets look nice in a row in your garden, and I like to grow them for the delicious tops that I steam, then add salt and butter on! I use wooden poles in teepee style and ladder style to grow pole beans on. You can get a lot of beans this way. Pick them before they get too big, or they will be tough and mealy. If some go un-noticed in your garden, just pick them after they've filled out and dry them for the beans inside and add to soup. Pole beans are another great vegetable for children to grow, and they can make teepee houses to hide in while they eat fresh beans. Try growing some scarlett runner beans. The red blossoms are beautiful to look at while you wait for delicious, large, flat, Romano type beans. They are delicious cooked, then just add butter, salt, and pepper! Try a variety of colors for your beans~purple pod, yellow wax and regular green. Swiss chard is another favorite of mine that I now plant instead of spinach, simply because I have more luck with it and less pest infestation. Try the colorful Bright Lights mixture with red, yellow and white stems. These are so delicious steamed, stems and all! Also, they are another colorful favorite for a childrens garden. Tall sunflowers are another thing my garden is never without. I use them as a border around my garden. You can dry the seeds out to eat, but I usually just let the birds eat them in the fall. Let me know about YOUR garden experiences in my guestbook section below. Gardening is my favorite past-time, along with a lot of other Americans and I hear Europeans, too. Growing a garden is such a healthy activity, whether vegetables or flowers, or even just in containers, if you don't have enough room. Being out in the sun will give you your needed vitamin D, too. Gardening also reminds me of the parable of the sower in the Bible. Happy gardening!

You almost have everything in this lens. I think only need some stuff for bonsai gardening. Like wires for a ficus ginseng perhaps.

Great resource! Have you ever heard of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds? They are my absolute favorite seed catalog. I get most of my seeds from them every year because they are huge activists against GMOS and seed companies like Monsanto. I also like John Scheepers Kitchen Garden Seeds. You might want to add those 2 seed companies to your list. They both have unusual varieties you can't find anywhere else.
  • Kimbesa Jan 17, 2011 @ 5:06 pm | delete

Awesome collection of resources!! Unfortunately, I live in town so I can't grow my own veggie garden anymore, but my parents have a huge garden on the farm where I grew up about 30 miles away so I still get all the fresh veggies I want in the summer. You can't beat garden fresh vegetables! I am still a big flower grower and in my opinion, Breck's is the best place for bulbs. I've had horrible luck with some of the other cheaper bulb companies. Thanks for all the great info....favorited and 5*****!

What a fantastically cute idea to have little plants in eggshells! Hope I remember it by spring...I have found that "Miller Nurseries" have quality plants as far as mail order. I've ordered from then and had great success. 5 star lens!

With this lens I've got EVERYTHING I need to plan and plant my garden. Lensrolled to my garden crafts and tomato lenses, too. January ... time to peruse the seed sites and catalogs ... ahhhhhhh

Great lens. I really like all the seed catalogs, all in one place so you don't have to search for them. So many other wonderful gardening things, too. I'll have to come back, there's too much for one sitting.
  • ElizabethJeanAllen May 26, 2008 @ 9:24 am | delete
Its been awhile since I planted a garden. I'm out of town a good bit in the summer and can't take care of it. My husband is a 'city boy' and doesn't like to get his hands dirty. When I do order something, its usually from Burpees.
