Seeing Jesus for the First Time

What I am Most Passionate About

I know I will see Jesus face to face some day, do you? When asked to write a page about something I'm passionate about, I was thinking of practical things...food, cloths, vacations, my husband, my children, but not spiritual things. I was a bit disappointed with myself when I realized that the most important thing in my life was not on the list going through my mind....the fact that one day I'm going to look into the face of Jesus, and that I can live each day in a close relationship with God because of what Jesus did. How precious and wonderful that is!

Throughout this lens, using pictures and whatever seems appropriate, I hope you'll know more about why seeing Jesus for the first time should be #1 on my list...and maybe your list too? it is so easy to be caught up in the every day things of life and to forget that there is an eternity ahead that is not like what we are familiar with, a supernatural thought. I want to be ready to see Jesus face to face for the first time.

Who will I see first in Heaven?

Dad? Relatives? or Jesus?

When someone you are close to passes from this life to the next, it brings the reality of our mortality close to home. I have thought about the day I leave my body behind so much more since being there when my Father left his behind. It's a moment I will never forget.

When I think about going to heaven, so often I first think about those faces I know, the ones I am familiar with...my father, my aunt, my grandparents, and close friends who passed on in God's timing...but not mine.

I have read a few books about heaven, and what it might be like when we first arrive, and it seems that in each people we knew on earth are the first we see.

If that is what happens, of course it will be wonderful, but what about Jesus? That is the face I long to see...I want to look into his eyes, to lovingly touch the places that were pierced for you and me...I hope I see Jesus first, and can't wait to be re-united with family and friends who also understood and believed in what Jesus did for them.

What Does Jesus Look Like?

"...there was nothing attractive about him, nothing to cause us to take a second look"

I often wonder what Jesus will look like. When I was growing up, our family spent time after dinner learning chapters from the Bible that my parents chose because of what we would learn from them. One of those was Isaiah 53...a prophecy about the coming Jesus, so accurate yet written so long before Jesus was born. In this passage it says in my "The Message" translation "there was nothing attractive about him, nothing to cause us to take a second look. He was looked down on and passed over, a man who suffered and knew pain firsthand..."

Since he was born in the middle east, I look at images of people from that region to get an idea of what He may look like. But whatever I can imagine does not matter, He will be beautiful...not because of how He looks, but because of what He has done.

This picture is beautifully done, and quite a handsome portrayal of Jesus from the artist's imagination.

A Down to Earth Bible

Written like we talk

When I was young, the King James Version of the Bible was the only one I ever read, with all the "thee's" and "thou's", and it is a beautiful version, but sometimes it's nice to read things the way we talk today. That is why I also have The Message, it speaks the way we do. This one is geared toward youth, you can also search for The Message Bible for Kindle.

Our Parent's Death and a Book

My Dad, my Husband's Mom

My husband and I each lost a parent within 8 days...his mother passed away on October 11, and my father passed away on October 19th...I wrote more about that on the page Heaven - Where did Our Parents Go?. Suddenly we were without dear people in our lives, and wanted to know more about where they had gone, and where we would one day see them again.

Many of us purchased copies of Randy Alcorn's "Heaven", in fact my father-in-law read the entire book out loud on audio cassette, and used it to share with the different ones that live at the assisted living home where he is in Colorado.

Then he sent them to us, we treasure them. This is a wonderful book, and not what my traditional view of heaven was by any means.

Why Do I Want to See Jesus?

The answer to that is simple, because He did so much for me. God knew that man could not keep His law perfectly, and required sacrifice, something hard for us to get our minds around sometimes because we are human and He is God...so Jesus, God's Son, paid the ultimate price...a terrible price...so that those who believe in what He has done would not have to.

He did it because He loves me..and you..how could I not care, or want to see someone who did so much? How could my relationship with God through Jesus not be the thing I am most passionate about?

The Passion of the Christ

This is a beautiful and difficult movie to watch, but something I like to do on Good Friday as a reminder of Jesus sacrifice.

Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth

This movie was done years back, but is still so relevant, and goes into great detail about Jesus life and miracles. Franco Zeffirelli does an excellent job of bringing this one together. It shows Jesus in a very serious light most of the time, but my husband says that He had a serious price to pay, and knew it through his ministry, so it's no wonder there are only a couple times when he smiles.

We love this, it's long, but wonderful.

We work with people who want to draw close to God but need help getting started. Like Jessica, a new believer, who wasn't getting much from reading her Bible. After she used our study puzzle, she now feels in Bible study time is very effective.

The Jesus Movie

This movie has been traveling all over the world spreading the good news, and in this one, you see a smiling Jesus more than any other about his life that I've seen. It is based on the book of Luke.

Thank you!

We appreciate it when special people called "lensmasters" on Squidoo visit, and like what they see enough to "bless" our lens. If the terms Squidoo, lensmasters, lenses, and Squid Angel are foreign to you, you should join us on Squidoo and in time, it will all make sense:-)

Do you look forward to seeing Jesus for the first time?

Excellent piece, you are one of a rare few that recognize that Jesus was not "handsome" in a worldy way. Many people also have the impression that he was like a hippy flower child only spreading love and are shocked to hear that he flipped tables over and drove out the wicked from the temple. It is also highly likely that he had short hair as did most of the men in his era, denoted by coins with Caesar's head and short hair cut as well as the new testament claim of it being a shame for a man to have long hair. If Jesus was the only long haired man among the apostles Judas wouldn't have had to kiss him to point him out in the betrayal. I also point out that he was quite strong and not effeminate like he is portrayed in some movies. I say "remember he was a carpenter and didn't have power tools so he was probably quite strong" :) Bless you!

What a beautiful article. I can tell your love for our Savior is so real. I have read so many recounts of people who went to heaven and returned to tell what it was like. My favorite is the recounting of Jesse DuPlantis's "Heaven - Close Encounters Of the God Kind". Great job.

What a beautiful lens! Have you seen the latest news? They did imagining of the Shroud of Turin and if that was the shroud of Jesus, they may have an idea of what he looked like. I thought it was cool! Love the lens. Blessed by a Squid Angel.

What a wonderful lens! When I picture Jesus in my mind's eye I see Him looking like the man that Warner Salman painted so many years ago. Probably because those are the images from my childhood but also because as the story goes from the artist...the vision came to him to paint.
