Sega Genesis Virtual Console Games List

Here you will find the complete listing of Sega Genesis games on Wii Virtual Console in North America. Late in 2006, Nintendo made old school Nintendo and Sega games available for download on the Wii Virtual Console. Most games cost between $5-8 and can be purchased in the Wii Shop by buying Wii Points. 100 Wii Points equals $1. For nerds like me, Virtual Console was the perfect answer to play your old favorite video games that over the years had been lost, disintegrated, had Pepsi spilled on, or borrowed to some clown you were best friends with for a short stint (I'm talking about you, Tom Koskinen, I want my Mortal Kombat II back!).

For a brief time, Sega dominated the video game market with the Genesis console. Genesis games were marketed to kids looking for edgier titles, and they also lacked the censorship Nintendo employed on games like Mortal Kombat by wiping out the blood and Fatalities. I wanted a Sega Genesis so bad I even traded in my Nintendo Entertainment System and games, and got completely robbed by Funcoland. But a few years later I picked up an NES secondhand because I can never stray to far away from Mario and Link.

Nintendo has released tons of classic Sega Genesis games on Wii Virtual Console. This lens will be constantly updated with news and rumors of new Sega Genesis games added to the Virtual Console library. You will find many of the best Sega Genesis games on VC like Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Street Fighter II', and Phantasy Star II. I'm praying someday soon Mortal Kombat will be released on Virtual Console, which would probably be a reality right now if Midway hadn't gone out of business. Enjoy the list and Sega Genesis box covers, Retro Gamer!

You need Wii Points to purchase Virtual Console games--which you can buy at the Nintendo eShop or as gift cards at retailers. Wii Points can be purchased as low as $10.

List of Sega Genesis Games Released on Virtual Console in 2011

With only 3 Sega Genesis games released in 2010 it is looking grim for 2011 because as of yet no Genesis games have been released. I have e-mailed, snail-mailed, and pranked any number I can to get any information about new Sega Genesis games for Virtual Console. No one thus far has listened to my cries. Perhaps it is time to go on a hunger strike, or take the less dramatic route and buy used copies of Sega Genesis games. We'll see.

Nintendo vs Sega

When the Nintendo Entertainment System first came out I was blown away and begging my parents to get me one for Christmas. Then the Sega Genesis came along and I dumped my trusty gray box basically to play EA NHL Hockey, and games that weren't censored like Mortal Kombat. Looking back now I would easily say Nintendo because they are the ones that got me hooked on video games for life, and thankfully for me created Virtual Console, so I can play the classic Super Nintendo games I missed out on like Contra IV, Super Star Wars, Donkey Kong Country and more.

Were You a Nintendo or Sega Kid?

Super Mario, he had his own cereal!

Edutopia says:

I was a Nintendo kid through and through but my friend and I were smart. I pestered for a NES/SNES and my friend pestered for a Master System/Genesis so that way we could maximize our game base.

jamezsquidoo says:

Danzuc says:

I bought into Sega first but was soon converted to Nintendo when I saw my friends SuperNES. Been a loyal Nintendo fan ever since.

Russia33 says:

I grew up with Nintendo. I love all of the Super Mario games.. I can still remember the theme song for Dr. Mario even though I haven't heard it for years. Back in the day I could have spent hours playing that game.

Sonic the Hedgehog, is it even close?

Danny says:

Genesis 6 button controller are the best for fighting games over SNES controller.

The_Goblins_Den says:

Like you, I ditched Nintendo after the NES era and got a Genesis. In retrospect, SNES was the superior system...but Sega had a few good exclusives going for them (especially with the Sega CD and 32X attached).

says:

I wasn't a kid but, I did like Sega games, I remember a Sega Game with a cat named Busby, and he collected yarn balls to help aliens. This was back with the older Sega games. I even named one of my cats I had some years back by his name.
I also likes Sonic the Hedgehog too.

Awesome Lens, I've seen quite a few of your awesome Lens, LIKED... I actually made a Streets of Rage Series page as well (if you remember my super mario world page I also updated that and added a boss guide). If you are interested in sega games you will love the lens.

    Top lens!

That is a hard question. I'm going to say Gunstar heroes because it just took advantage of every bit of technology the console had to offer. The only thing that might have come close to it on the Snes in that regard was probably super mario world

Hmmm, that's a tough one. The Sonic and Streets Of Rage games were great, but I also really liked Cyborg Justice, Ranger X, and Rocket Knight. Excellent lens, by the way.
