Selena

Selena was a Mexican American singer. She was nicknamed "The queen of Tejano music". After her unfortunate murder, the funeral was a very touching affair and her fans came in droves.

Family, friends and fans alike are still missing this marvellous Tejano singer.

The music of Selena is still very popular and her voice still is a beautiful as it was when she lived! I've listed some of her most beautiful CD's below. If you've never heared of Selena before, listen to some of the samples that the Selen Music site provides (link at the bottom of the page), you'll see what I'm talking about.

Selena Live - The Last Concert

There are 55 minutes of the actual Selena here, filmed live at Houston's Astrodome in 1995. The 23-year-old Tejano singer performs her light, catchy tunes all in Spanish, save for a '70s disco medley (which includes, poignantly, "I Will Survive"); polished and charismatic, if not extraordinarily talented, Selena was clearly on the way up before her death at 23 at the hands of an employee.

That she was later portrayed onscreen by Jennifer Lopez, who has eclipsed Selena's stardom by far, no doubt partly explains the inclusion on the DVD of a 45-minute documentary (truthfully, more like a lengthy puff piece for Entertainment Tonight) about the Selena biopic. If you want to know how the filmmakers made those tough decisions about hair, clothes, and lip-syncing, you will not be disappointed. But the real thing's better. -- Sam Graham

As a huge Selena fan and someone who was not fortunate enough to attend one of her concerts, I was thrilled when this DVD of her sell out concert in Houston was released. We all know that Selena was tragically murdered but it was a wonderful experience to see Selena perform on stage and give it her all in this great entertaining concert. We see Selena in all her beauty giving an unforgetable performance. With such style, grace, and great moves, she keeps us entertained from beginning to end. If you enjoyed the movie Selena and the soundtrack, many of those songs are performed in this exciting concert. We get to see her husband, Chris behind her playing his guitar even though her sister was unable to be there playing the drums due to a injury. I highly recommend this video to any Selena fan and fan of great Latino music. Excellent!! -- S.M., Louisiana, U.S.A.

Selena Bio - Selena Bomez Biography Wikipedia - Selena Timeline

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995), best known mononymously as Selena, was a Mexican American singer who has been called "The Queen of Tejano music".Mitchell, Rick. "Selena". Houston Chronicle, May 21, 1995. Retrieved on February 1, 2008. The youngest child of a Mexican-American couple, Selena released her first album at the age of twelve. She won Female Vocalist of the Year at the 1987 Tejano Music Awards and landed a recording contract with EMI a few years later. Her fame grew throughout the early 1990s, especially in Spanish-speaking countries.

Selena attained further notability in North America after she was murdered at the age of 23 by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club. On April 12, 1995, two weeks after her death, George W. Bush, governor of Texas at the time, declared her birthday "Selena Day" in Texas.Orozco, Cynthia E. Quintanilla Pérez, Selena. The Handbook of Texas online. Retrieved on May 29, 2009 Warner Brothers made a film based on her life starring Jennifer Lopez in 1997. And her life was featured in the musical Selena Forever starring Veronica Vazquez as Selena. As of June 2006, Selena was commemorated with a museum and a bronze life-sized statue (Mirador de la Flor in Corpus Christi, Texas), which are visited by hundreds of fans each week.

Dreaming of You - Selena

Released three months after her murder in 1995, Dreaming of You introduced the Tejano queen to the mainstream pop audience. Four new tunes recorded with producers Keith Thomas and Guy Roche envisioned Selena as a dance-pop diva similar to Janet Jackson or Mariah Carey, but with a Latin twist. Far more arresting are the two classic mariachi numbers and a bilingual duet with David Byrne recorded for the movie Don Juan DeMarco, in which Selena had a bit part. The contrast between her passionate invitation to "come dance with me" and Byrne's nerdy white-guy delivery indicated her wide-open creative potential. The rest of the album consists of remixes of Selena's Latin-pop hits, including a masterful version of "Techno Cumbia" that bring out the hip-hop and reggae flavors in the groove. The tragedy was that such a promising introduction also served as a sad farewell. -- Rick Mitchell

Selena's last album is a tragic tribute to a magnificent talent, a painful vision of what would have been had she lived, and evidence of just how much the music world lost when she was taken from us. Her rich, sweet voice paints a picture of dreams realized and snatched away with the haunting "Dreaming of You" and "I Could Fall in Love." Even non-Spanish speakers can enjoy the happy rhythm of her Tejano classics. Selena will forever live on through her music and in the hearts of generations to come with this classic CD. Selena - Greatest Hits

I know that Selena fans will complain that her Cumbia hits are left off this collection, and being a hardcore Selena fan myself I would like to have seen "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", "Amor Prohibido" "Si Una Vez" and "Como La Flor" as well as some live hits from The Last Concert of her peforming these hits, but there is only so many songs a studio can fit on to a single 80 minute Compact Disc. I personally would have included these tracks instead of "A Million To One", "Wherever You Are", "Captive Heart" or "God's Child".
However there are some very strong Selena hits presented here. I know they are ALL in English and none in spanish so the album does seem a little un-fair, but so many classic Selena songs are on here. Basically All of the songs she was planning to put on her English Debuet recorded with EMI records. You could think of this as the Finished "Dreaming Of You".
Her Two massive U.S. Radio Hits "I Could Fall In Love" and "Dreaming Of You" are included in this collection. They are her two best songs. The Radio Hits are certainlly not the only enjoyable songs on here. "My Love" is a Great R'n'B Pop song and really shows the Fly Girl side Selena opittimized so well.
This track even though short was extremely catchy, and could have been a single. "Missing My Baby" is another sparkling R'n'B tune that is kind of Lovey - Dovey and Cute. Good Song.
"I'm Getting Used To You" is another smooth track the album has to offer. Not as good as the previous two, but certainlly not a bad song.
The Flamenco Tinged "Always Mine" is a fun track that will no boubt get you up and dancing. It has some Spanish language pieces in it, and sounds great. Other song to get you up and dancing are the Club Like "Is It The Beat" which is one of the albums highlights. Two other good Selena ballads are showcased here. The rarely heard R'n'B ballad "Only Love" and early love song attempt "Where Did The Feeling Go" were previously unreleased on a Selena album, and make this compilation a real keeper. Selena's tribute to the "West Side Story" Soundtrack "A Boy Like That" which is a smooth Groove Ballad is also included here, so overall though this album Offers none of her Cumbia hits it has plenty of Tejano, and Mainstream Hits. I reccommend buying this over "Dreaming Of You" anyday, because this gives you a lot more for your money, and is definetly worth it. If You want some of Selena's Cumbia Rhythms I suggest purchasing "Selena - Live" or "Unforgettable - The Live Album" because Selena's Cumbia Songs are always heard best when she sings live, because the intensity and Rhythm is captured and these albums show Selena's true talent as a performer. This is one of Selena's best Compilations and has plenty to offer for any Selena fan. It is a Must Own. -- Chazzyb, London, GB

All My Hits - Todos Mis Exitos - Selena

This third compilation of Selena's material is hyped by EMI officials as being a complete collection of her biggest hits. It is no exaggeration. All 16 tracks are hits, and the disc includes her biggest numbers, such as "Amor Prohibido," "Como la Flor," and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom." The CD features her English-language hits as well: "I Could Fall in Love," "Dreaming of You," and "Missing My Baby." There's also "Disco Medley Pt. II (Last Dance/The Hustle/On the Radio)," recorded live at the Houston Rodeo. Selena and the band sound sharp and on the money. "On the Radio" impacts in particular, through its lyrics about love conducted in secret--a situation that applied to Selena and her guitarist Chris Perez before they were married in 1992. -- Ramiro Burr

Well I have to say this is probably her best album to get if you want both spanish and inglish hits this one just about has them all the popullar ones that is. I must say I was veary dissapointed in her other album titled her greatest hits only because it has all her inglish hits on one cd and I mean all of them. They don't skip one and you see thats what I thought wasent right her spanish stuff was really good to, infact her spanish songs like the ones on this cd those are her real hits the inglish wasent till later I just think they should have mabe thought about her spanish hits as well, and made a cd with all of them on it like the songs (Besitos and Tengo Ganas De Llorar). those are not even all the ones I wanted theres more then that but I have to say this cd has most of them but I still think they should make a greatest hits of all her spanish to. I mean it's like I said that is the real selena thats what she is known for is her spanish hits! Thats what really got her where she would have still been right now. I like you alot selena I miss you and I just whant poeple to remember that you have spanish songs that are really good to, not just your inglish. -- SEXY CHICA "LOCA13" (CALIFORNIA)

Amor Prohibido - Selena

Bidi Bidi Bom Bom - Selena

Released in March 1994 exactly a year before Selena would be shot and killed by her ex-fan club president, this CD demonstrates a band at the peak of its creative force. The hits were obvious--the eloquent "Amor Prohibido," on love conducted in secret, and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom," a magical pop tune that could work in any dance club. "Cobarde" and "El Chico" were easy cumbias to like; "Fotos y Recuerdos" was an ironic message on having only photographs and memories left. But highly underrated was the lovely and stoic "No Me Queda Mas," on facing the end, yet keeping a sense of dignity and self-worth. -- Ramiro Burr

My favorite singer of all-time flourishes with this piece of Latin history called AMOR PROHIBIDO. Her most recognized Tejano recording boasts charming pop/Latin tracks like "Amor Prohibido" and Selena's very own penned "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", and the ballady "No Me Queda Mas". I give this album 5 out of 5 stars because it shines poignantly like no other of Selena's Latin CDs! It's not hard to guess why Selena would've been up there with the likes of Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin. This is a Classic and a MUST BUY in my mind - and I'm not even Hispanic! She rules. -- C. Eberlein, Boston, MA, US

Due to their bouncy beats, the songs that stood out the most to me when I first purchased this CD was the humorous track "El Chico Del Apartamento 512," and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom." Now, my favorite tracks are by far "Amor Prohibido" and the pop/rock influenced "Ya No." Amor Prohibido holds a special place in my heart, because it was the first Selena CD I ever bought, plus it was the first Latin CD I ever bought, introducing me to a different music style, which I love. This CD will always be important to me. -- Amaris Raine, USA

Who killed Selena?

"How was selena killed?" - This is the question that comes up over and over again. The beautiful Selena, who had many hits, among them "Dreaming of you", that has also been recorded as instrumental sample and instrumental mp3, "I could fall in love"

Fans still look at pictures of Selena in her last concert, and remember with shock the funeral of Selena.

When then after the Selena Quintanilla Perez' death an autopsy was performed, and pictures of this autopsy appeared on the internet, the sorrowe of fans, friends and family was very intense.

There are still many questions like "Tell me about Selena", "When was Selena killed?", "Who killed selena?" being asked in forums around the internet.

The name of the killer is Yolanda Saldivar:

In early 1995, the Quintanillas discovered that Yolanda Saldívar, the president of Selena's fan club (Texas-section) and the manager of her boutiques, was cheating her and that she was embezzling money from the fan club. Selena decided to dismiss her.

Soon after the discovery and after telling her that the had to go, Selena accepted to meet Yolanda Saldívar in a Days Inn hotel in Corpus Christi on March 31, 1995. She needed to receive files and paperwork needed for her tax filing.

At the Days Inn, Selena demanded the missing financial documents. Yolanda Saldívar did not immeditely hand over the files and istead claimed she had been raped in Mexico. That's why Selena drove Saldívar to a hospital where doctors did not find any evidence of rape. Saldívar then returned to the motel where Selena again demanded the missing financial papers.

Selena told her that she just did not trust her anymore. At 11:48 am, Yolanda Saldívar drew a gun from her bag and threatened Selena. As Selena turned and was leaving the room, Saldívar shot her once in the back. Selena ran towards the lobby to get help and then collapsed on the floor as the clerk called 911.

Before collapsing to the floor, Selena named Saldívar as her agressor and gave the room number where she had been shot. Selena was transported to a local hospital where she died there from a massive blood loss 1:05 p.m.. Sleenda was only 23 year old and died much too early!

Tejano - Tex-Mex Music

The Origins of the word 'Tejano'

In 1821, at the end of the Mexican War of Independence, there were about 4,000 Tejanos living in what is now the state of Texas along side a lesser number of immigrants. In the 1820s, many settlers from the United States and other nations moved to Texas from the United States. By 1830, the 30,000 settlers in Texas outnumbered the Tejanos six to one. The Texians and Tejanos alike rebelled against the totalitarian authority of Mexico City and the draconian measures implemented by the Santa Anna regime. Tensions between the central Mexican government and the settlers eventually led to the Texas Revolution.

When immigrants first arrived in Texas, Tejano settlements consisted of three separate regions. The Northern Nacogdoches region, the Bexar-Goliad region along the San Antonio River, and the Rio Grande ranching frontier between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande. These populations shared certain characteristics yet they were also independent from one another. The main unifying factor for these separate regions was their shared responsibility of defending the Tejas frontier.

Ranching was a major element in the Bexar-Goliad settlement which consisted of a belt of ranches that extended along the San Antonio river between Bexar and Goliad. The Nacogdoches settlement was located in the Northern Texas region. Tejanos from Nacogdoches traded with the French and Anglo residents of Louisiana and were culturally influenced by them. The third settlement was located North of the Rio Grande toward the Nueces river. These Southern ranchers were citizens of Spanish origin from Tamaulipas and Northern Mexico and identified with both Spanish and Mexican culture.[3] They were of the same stock as the original Tejano settlers. The Northern Mexican states of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, and Tamaulipas seceded from Mexico in 1840 to establish la Republica del Rio Grande (the Rio Grande Republic) with its capital in what is now Laredo, Texas. However, their much anticipated political marriage with their Tejano kin did not come to fruition.

: Tejano or Tex-Mex music is also a kind of music originating in Texas.

Tejano (Spanish for "Texan"; archaic spelling Texano) is a term used to identify a Texan of Mexican and/or Latin-American descent.
