Selena Quintanilla Perez: The Life and Death of a Tejano Star

Ranked #825 in Music, #20,960 overall

Selena: Tribute to the Original Queen of Tejano Music

Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a beautiful, young rising Tejano star in the music world, when she was suddenly murdered by the president of her fan club in 1995.

Personally, I was pretty young when she died, and was mildly familiar with her music at the time.  The day she was murdered, that all changed.  EVERYONE in the Coastal Bend area (South Texas) was shaken by her sudden death.  It was so heartbreaking, because she was an American-born Latina, who was making it in the music industry, and on the brink of super-stardom.

This page will give you a brief overview of Selena's story.

Facts About Selena's Life

Born: 16 April 1971
Birthplace: Lake Jackson, Texas
Died: 31 March 1995 (shot to death)
Best Known As: The 'Queen of Tejano'

Name at birth: Selena Quintanilla

Until her untimely death at age 23, Selena was the sexy and charismatic 'Queen of Tejano.' (Tejano music is a South Texas creation which uses guitars and accordions to blend Mexican musical styles with European polkas and waltzes.) Selena was raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, and before she turned 10 she was already fronting the family band, Los Dinos. Their 1989 album Selena y Los Dinos put them on the map, and the 1992 album Entre a Mi Mundo (Enter My World) went gold. Still unknown in much of America, Selena became a star in Mexico and Latin America, known both for her Spanish-language hits and her wholesome sex appeal. A fashion plate who liked to design her own clothes, Selena favored snug pants and midriff-baring bustiers that earned her the nickname "the Mexican Madonna." Selena Live! (1993) won a Grammy as best Mexican-American album, and Amor Prohibido (Forbidden Love, 1994) was another hit.

In 1995 Selena began recording her first English-language album, Dreaming of You, and seemed poised to cross over to mainstream success. But on 31 March that year she was shot and killed at a Days Inn hotel in Corpus Christi. The shooter was Yolanda Saldivar, the founder of the Selena fan club and manager of Selena's clothing boutiques, who apparently realized she was about to be fired for embezzling money from the singer. Saldivar was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of 30 years. Selena was played by Jennifer Lopez in the 1997 film Selena. A greatest hits album, Ones, was released in 2002.

Selena married Christopher Perez, a guitarist in her band, on 2 April 1992... She had a small role as a mariachi singer in the Johnny Depp film Don Juan DeMarco, which was released just a week after her death in 1995... According the Houston Chronicle, the name Los Dinos "was taken from the Italian slang word for los muchachos, the boys"... Yolanda Saldivar's first opportunity for parole will be in the year 2025, coincidentally the same year of release as Arthur Bremer, who shot George Wallace... In 2002, with the approval of her family, the revolver used to shoot Selena was cut into pieces and scattered in Corpus Christi Bay.

Summary of Selena's Life and Death

Article by the Houston Chronicle

05/21/95

In life, she was the queen of Tejano music. In death, the 23-year-old singer is becoming a legend
By RICK MITCHELL

Abraham Quintanilla tried to remember his daughter as she'd looked the last time he saw her, just the day before.

Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a full-grown woman of 23, a budding superstar who dreamed of raising a big family with her guitarist/husband once her music career settled down. She had a smile that could torch up the night, and a figure that turned heads wherever she went.

But the only image that would come into focus in Abraham's mind was that of an 8-year-old girl, standing nervously behind the microphone at the family restaurant in Lake Jackson.

Even back then, Abraham had been convinced that Selena was destined to become a star. A former musician himself, he recognized the rare power and precise pitch in her voice.

He had staked everything on her talent. From the band's early years traveling the South Texas back roads in an old, beat-up van with a foldout bed in the back, to playing for 60,000 rodeo fans in the Astrodome, Selena had become the biggest star in Tejano music. She was a household name in Mexico and much of Latin America and was on the verge of an unprecedented breakthrough to the English-speaking pop audience.

Now, through a tragic turn of events, the dream Abraham had shared with his wife, Marcela, and their three children had been shattered.

That morning, Selena had failed to show up at Q Productions studio. It wasn't unusual for her to be late. Perpetual tardiness was part of her charm.

But on this particular Friday morning, it was surprising that Selena hadn't at least called. She had a 10 a.m. appointment with her older brother, A.B., and sister, Suzette, to cut the vocal tracks for a demo tape of a new song A.B. had written. Selena also was midway through the recording of her first crossover album, with lyrics in English. The album was coming together slowly because of her hectic schedule.

Selena Movie

In 1997, Warner Bros produced a biopic movie about Selena. The film was directed by Oscar nominated filmmaker Gregory Nava, and featured Jennifer Lopez as Selena. Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla, Jr., was played by Emmy winner, Edward James Olmos and Constance Marie (Angie from "The George Lopez Show") played Selena's mother.

This was a beautiful celebration of Selena's life. The movie provides an overview of Selena's path to succes, her sudden death, and the adoration of her fans. I personally loved hearing Selena's story, because I could relate to her. She was a Mexican-American, who didn't truly couldn't identify herself as Mexican or American. There is this wonderfully complex and hybrid culture in the Coastal Bend area, and Selena was an icon that symbolized our traditions, our values and our mixed identity. The movie showcases Selena's life and Jennifer Lopez does an outstanding job of portraying how vibrant and vivacious Selena was. Overall, this was a wonderful movie and the actors were perfectly cast.

Awards:
Golden Globe Awards: Best Performance by an actress in a Musical or Comedy motion picture, Jennifer Lopez.
ALMA Awards: The film was nominated for six American Latino Media Awards (ALMA) and won four.
Grammy Awards: Best Instrumental Composition, Dave Grusin.
MTV Movie Awards: Best Breakthrough Performance, Jennifer Lopez.

Plan a Trip to Visit Selena's Hometown

Thinking about making a trip out to visit Corpus Christi? You will can visit a museum, boutique, gravesite, and memorial all in honor of Selena.

Here are few experiences that others have shared:

Lee's Corpus Christi Trip
About 8:25am CST my mom, uncle, and bro left for Corpus Christi. All the way we are listening to Selena. We arrived in Corpus about 11:00 am.

The first thing we did was GET ME A HAIRCUT. We went to some place we found the girl who had Selena pics up on her salon's wall (I took a pic of them, but it did not come out good). We were there for about 5-10 minutes and then we were off to see our first Selena site.

Christian and Marissa's Corpus Christi Trip
I remember the first time I ever heard the name of someone who would impact my life dramatically. My cousin, Marissa, came up to me and asked, "Have you ever seen the movie 'Selena'?"
I hadn't.

I remember questioning her over and over again -- 'do you mean 'Celine Dion'? She said no, 'Selena'! Marissa and I were about 5 or 6 years old when we sat down and watched it at one of our usual family gatherings. I remember we both were crying at the end. To do this day I still don't know how someone would do something so awful to such an incredible person.

Amanda's Corpus Christi Trip
I had only learned about Selena in late 2005. Now, I consider myself to be her biggest fan, and I'm not just saying that. I loved her so much that I knew I had to go see the things that Selena had seen, go to the places she'd gone to, and all of that. And on November 3rd, 2006, I left to do just that. My dad had booked us a room in the Bayside Omni Hotel, and we were staying from Friday the 3rd to Sunday the 5th. It doesn't seem very long when you say it, but we got to do so much in those 3 days.
