The best photo that I took of myself was in Sequoia National Park, where I'm standing next to Giant Sequoia. I had to sprint 30 feet before the self time clicked the camera. Since I took about a dozen photos, this amounted to a good workout.

Very useful information. I've found having a remote unit to fire the shutter helps, as you can keep shooting while adjusting your pose. I use this technique a lot when shooting insects and flowers.

yup, you can try using a mirror too - can be very hit & miss but my profile pic is one of the best self portraits I've ever managed! As a photographer myself, I don't mind the lens showing in the image, it's kind of suited to me I think :)

Wow, what a great lens! Might I suggest another great self-portrait camera? Canon Powershots (the recent ones anyway) have a feature that's called "smile detection". You set your camera on a tripod, put it on that mode and press the button to take a picture. Then, get in front of the tripod and smile. The camera won't take a picture until you smile. How neat is that?
  • kimark421 Jan 2, 2012 @ 11:26 am | delete

Great advice. I see a lot of people take pictures of themselves with bad angles. If you're focusing on your face, try not to cut anything except your hair off. Also, make sure the lighting isn't too bright or dim!

Great tips! I'm always very shy in front of the camera. Much more comfortable behind the lens. I've been imagining some creative techniques I may use for a self-portrait. Thanks for the ideas.

Great tips. I've never taken a self portrait, always had someone else take the picture for me. With these tips, maybe I'll give it a shot. Excellent tutorial, thanks!

Thanks for all of the great tips! I'm feeling inspired to go take some self-portraits now...

By the way, I should add that after reading this I did go and take a whole bunch of self-portraits with the timer on my camera! Most of the pictures of me on my 'Who is Tien Frogget' lens are from this inspired session, including the main image. So thanks for the nudge, they really turned out great! I've always been so-so at taking self portraits, and your tips helped me improve. :)

I've never taken even a halfway decent self-portrait. Then again, I always do the hold-camera-out-smile-and-click method. Which, of course, always makes my nose look too big. :) I think you've got the right idea.

You have to have something to start with! :) Seriously, there is some excellent information here, and great tips on how to take a professional quality self-portrait. Congratulations on the award, too - definitely deserved!

My avatar pic is my only "sort of" self portrait. It was a spur of the moment thing when I was out on a walk one day and had a long shadow behind me. I like the Samsung camera with the screen on the front too. It would be great for people on vacation I would think.

It's been a few years since I tried a self portrait with the camera and I need a new photo. Your tips will definitely prove helpful. And Photoshop will help me with the little imperfections the camera loves to capture :-D
  • WordCustard Sep 27, 2010 @ 3:36 am | delete
Oh Photoshop is a gift when it comes to getting rid of the imperfections! 'Beauty Mode' on a camera also helps. :)

  • Frankster Sep 14, 2010 @ 10:23 am | delete
Thanks for putting this great lens together. I hate getting my picture taken but make myself because I know I want to remember people and things I did. Taking my picture myself will be less intimidating and good practice for when others take my photo. Bear hugs, Frankie

  • WordCustard Sep 10, 2010 @ 4:40 am | delete

  • SquidooKimberly Sep 8, 2010 @ 12:37 pm | delete
I expect this lens would be very popular with all of us who shamelessly take self portraits using our cell phones! ;) Thanks for all the tips.
  • WordCustard Sep 8, 2010 @ 2:38 pm | delete
Trouble with cell phones is that they are getting a lot better quality pictures now, so we can't blame a bad pic on the camera any more! :) Thanks for visiting, Kimberly!
  • aesta1 Sep 6, 2010 @ 4:24 am | delete
Your lens took my frustration away. Am just camera shy. I have tried to take good pictures of myself but to no avail. I think the material itself is wanting.
  • WordCustard Sep 6, 2010 @ 8:46 am | delete
Glad this helped, I think it is a common theme here that we feel a different subject is the answer to a great self portrait, I know I have often thought that myself! :)
  • Kylyssa Aug 23, 2010 @ 2:32 pm | delete
I really haven't taken any great photos of myself but after reading your lens, I'll probably have a much better chance of taking a great photo of myself. Thank you for all of these specific and useful self-photography tips!

Thank you so much! Greatly appreciated. Looks like you've already got the hang of taking a great picture of yourself -- or was someone else wielding the camera?
  • sema Jul 7, 2010 @ 10:37 am | delete
Great tips! The tip to lean in towards the camera to reduce double chin should be useful to many including me :)
  • WordCustard Jul 8, 2010 @ 5:09 am | delete
Thanks sema. I knew a professional photographer who would always take photos from above for same reason -- it was more slimming and flattering. If you are looking up, no double chin! So he would stand on a ladder or get groups to pose in stairwells. :)
  • SoyCandleLover-Maker Jul 1, 2010 @ 8:07 am | delete
Great tips for self portraits! I wish I had seen this before my attempt. Lensrolled to SoyCandleLover-Maker? which is where my one and only attempt shows how badly I did. :D :D Thanks!

I see terrible photos on Facebook that emphasize every wrinkle and bags under the eyes because of poor lighting/angle/etc. I'll have to pass this advice on to many of my facebook friends.
  • WordCustard Jul 1, 2010 @ 2:12 am | delete
That would be fantastic, thanks Vallain. Here's to better FB profile photos all round!
  • BooJeeBeads Jun 27, 2010 @ 4:49 pm | delete

Wow, was is really great! I see some wonderful tips, like bending your arms and leaning toward the camera that I have never heard before. I will definitely be trying out your advice. I always look like I am a fat mouse in pictures, you know puffy cheeks, red eyes, maybe not whiskers yet, but I think you get the idea :)
  • WordCustard Jun 3, 2010 @ 3:39 am | delete
Aw, thank you! LOL, I am sure you look nothing like a fat mouse! :D

  • paperfacets May 26, 2010 @ 3:02 pm | delete
Yes. like you said arm shots are a pain. I probably went through 100 shots and got nothing.
  • WordCustard May 27, 2010 @ 5:40 am | delete
It's tough with those to get enough distance from the camera. I had marginal success by having a ledge on which to rest the camera which reduced camera-shake. Had more luck with a tripod with 10 second delay although of course it takes a little longer.
  • Myrle-Beach-Photography May 24, 2010 @ 5:59 pm | delete

I never was quite sure of how to take a Self Portrait with my camera so this information will be very helpful if I get over my camera shyness. I really liked the tips on posing. Now, if I could figure out how to make the Self Portrait look 50 lbs lighter, I will be happy. I am going to share this link with my son as he and his wife do a lot of sightseeing but have very few photos of them together.
  • WordCustard May 23, 2010 @ 7:55 am | delete
Thanks for your visit and for sharing this link! I guess we'd all love to look a little slimmer, but it's amazing what the right camera pose can do. Although I am sure your portrait would be lovely regardless :)
  • crosscreations May 14, 2010 @ 5:20 pm | delete
Seems lately like most teenage girls I know are PROS at self-portraits, they LOVE doing this so much, their favorite past-time. Some have hundreds of photos of themselves and their friends posted on FB. Me I've not done this much at all, but found this 5 star page very interesting indeed.
  • WordCustard May 15, 2010 @ 4:34 am | delete
I think you're right -- it's a result of the social media generation. It's the rest of us who still feel a bit shy even about taking our own picture. Thanks for your visit!
  • mulberry Apr 25, 2010 @ 12:40 pm | delete
I needed this information several years ago. Hubby and I got married late in life and didn't have a formal wedding. We saw a justice of the peace actually. Anyway, we wanted to take our own picture since we wouldn't have formal wedding photos. Shew, we needed tips!
  • WordCustard Apr 25, 2010 @ 12:56 pm | delete
Sometimes those candid ones with one of you stretching your arm out have a charm all of their own. But I know what you mean about not getting a wedding pic that you love. Never too late to get a cute photo of you together though. :)
  • Pukeko Apr 22, 2010 @ 11:54 pm | delete
Great suggestions here. I have never been successful with self portraits, but maybe if I try some of your tricks they will be great.
  • WordCustard Apr 23, 2010 @ 7:49 am | delete
Have fun, Pukeko! And thanks for having a read of these tips. :)
  • EditionH Apr 20, 2010 @ 12:41 pm | delete
Great lens with great tips. I mostly do the click and run method, no flashlight and lots of trees as background ... and I try to think "cheese"! :).
  • WordCustard Apr 20, 2010 @ 2:47 pm | delete
Ah but as an artist, you also have the option to simply paint a great self-portrait! Thanks for taking the time to visit here. :)
  • flowergardener Apr 14, 2010 @ 3:39 pm | delete
I look horrible in photos, so thank you for the tips! Definately need to lean forward to reduce my double chins!

We are always our own worst critics! But thank you for the visit and kind words.
  • QueSea Apr 13, 2010 @ 8:54 pm | delete
One more thought. I've add this to my How to Create an Avatar lens :)
  • QueSea Apr 13, 2010 @ 8:53 pm | delete
Thanks for the helpful tips. I've tried this a couple times but never quite get the mood I want to capture :) Here's to another try. I've saved this as a favorite.
  • WordCustard Apr 14, 2010 @ 3:26 am | delete
Best of luck with your self portraits! And many thanks for the lensroll. :)

I've complimented you before, but I came back to say - Blessed by a SquidAngel!
  • WordCustard Apr 12, 2010 @ 4:03 pm | delete
Oh, thank you so much Jen! And congratulations on your lovely new halo and wings. :)
  • bakerwoman Apr 11, 2010 @ 4:04 pm | delete
Great lens. I shy away from self-portraits because I always ended up looking like my passport photo or one of those posted in the postoffice. lol.
I lensrolled this and added a fav.
  • WordCustard Apr 12, 2010 @ 9:13 am | delete
Thanks so much, bakerwoman. You look very photogenic to me!
  • Blue_Sphinx Apr 3, 2010 @ 7:01 pm | delete
I saw a lot of do's on this lens, but I didn't watch the videos. Is there a list of don'ts here? Like... don't use a mirror unless you actually know how? :D I was surprised to find that I'd already followed a few of these tips, and will definitely be taking self portraits in the future, so I'll remember to use more of your tricks and tips. They look very sensible, but like most common-sense things, they're not things people think of straight off.
  • WordCustard Apr 4, 2010 @ 9:27 am | delete
Thanks Blue_Sphinx! No 'don'ts' as with digital cameras it is fairly obvious pretty quickly what is not working... not like in the bad old days when you had to wait to get the film developed to find out you had a pot plant growing out your head or a silly grin. :) Always happy to add suggestions though! Best of luck with your self portraits.
  • Sibelius Mar 29, 2010 @ 10:20 pm | delete
Your tips are very good for anyone shooting portraits, whether they are self portraits or photos of others. It's amazing how much difference the subtle techniques you describe can make! Lensrolled to my two travel photo lenses!
  • WordCustard Mar 30, 2010 @ 4:10 am | delete
Delighted to have a lensroll to such classy and useful photography lenses. Thanks for taking the time to comment here.
  • kimmanleyort Mar 3, 2010 @ 1:26 pm | delete
Excellent tips and very deserving of purple star!
  • WordCustard Mar 4, 2010 @ 5:05 am | delete
    Thanks very much Kim!
  • vallain Mar 2, 2010 @ 9:02 am | delete
Great tips. I've seen some really creepy pictures of people on Facebook and elsewhere when they tried getting a self-photo without your advice.
  • WordCustard Mar 2, 2010 @ 10:09 am | delete
Hi Vallain... that made me laugh! :-) Thanks for visiting.
  • WordCustard Mar 1, 2010 @ 4:03 am | delete
Thank you very much for all the kind comments and the angel blessing! I'm glad this is proving of interest to others here.
  • eclecticeducation Feb 28, 2010 @ 6:36 pm | delete
Very interesting! Great lens. Congratulations on your purple star!!! Blessed by an Angel.
  • WhiteOak50 Feb 27, 2010 @ 1:54 pm | delete
This is actually very interesting for a lens!! I mean taking a good picture of yourself would have its good points, especially if you HATE having your picture taken like I do. Good job and a well deserved purple star!!
  • CCGAL Feb 26, 2010 @ 3:37 pm | delete
I admit to having used the long arm technique ... but I have never shared ANY of the photos. In fact, I'm amazed the camera still works, ha-ha-ha. Congratulations on the purple star. Lots of useful information in here.
  • Novar7 Feb 25, 2010 @ 11:36 am | delete
    Good tips!
  • WordCustard Feb 23, 2010 @ 11:01 am | delete
Thanks so much everyone! Best of luck with the self-portrait shots, those of you who are going to give it a go.
  • Waxing-Lyrical Feb 23, 2010 @ 10:40 am | delete
Congrats on your purple star, Nicki :)

I'm not good with a camera, usually chopping off vital parts of the picture, so a self portrait would probably be of my neck ;)
  • jptanabe Feb 23, 2010 @ 10:05 am | delete
Great job! Now all I need is a decent camera that I can work (my husband's is too complicated and my daughter's is, well, with her!) and maybe beauty mode would help, and then I'll be ready for my self-portrait.
  • ulla_hennig Feb 23, 2010 @ 9:29 am | delete
I tried to but failed miserably. But your lens motivates me to try again...
  • KathyMcGraw Feb 23, 2010 @ 8:42 am | delete
I just love seeing that purple star up there, Congratulations Nicki :) I'll bet many can identify or use this lens.
  • WildFacesGallery Feb 23, 2010 @ 8:33 am | delete
Congratulations on a great lens. I fav'd it as an artist I'm always supposed to submit pic's of myself and I usually hate what I get when I try to take the photos myself. Maybe this will help. Or maybe nothing will help because it's me. :)

    At any rate, great lens.
  • KarenTBTEN Feb 22, 2010 @ 8:42 pm | delete
Congratulations. I kind of laughed when I saw the title. One of the recent entries on my Blogspot blog (EN) has a picture that I took of my own self in the Ravenna Creek Ravine ('long arm'... and with a disposable film camera). A professional would have done better, but it turned out well enough that it could make you wonder... uh, well, how long my arms are, I guess.
  • WordCustard Feb 22, 2010 @ 3:48 pm | delete
Thanks very much Brenda and Jen!
  • JenOfChicago Feb 22, 2010 @ 3:13 pm | delete
This is a great lens, congrats on the purple star! I especially like the tips on how to pose yourself - most people do not realize that they can make themselves look better just by how they face the camera. Well done!
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Feb 18, 2010 @ 9:53 pm | delete
Great job! No, I haven't done any self-portraits.
  • ElizabethJeanAllen Feb 17, 2010 @ 4:40 pm | delete
I love to take pictures though I'm not very good at it. A self-portrait... Nah. I'd rather not have any pictures of myself.
    Thanks for sharing
    Lizzy
  • WordCustard Feb 18, 2010 @ 9:04 am | delete
You look so adorable in your avatar picture too... :-) But I do understand, so many of us dislike pictures of ourselves. Thanks for dropping in, Lizzy
  • Ladydove62 Feb 16, 2010 @ 10:59 pm | delete
This is an excellent lens. I just got a new camera for Christmas and am going to have to try out some of these tips. Thanks for sharing this fantastic info.
  • WordCustard Feb 17, 2010 @ 9:16 am | delete
You are very welcome -- have fun with your new camera!
  • Pastiche Jan 25, 2010 @ 4:01 pm | delete
Woo hoo, instant face lift (just lean forward a bit with shoulders back). I'm never happy with photos of myself - perhaps now when someone (even I) takes my portrait I'll actually like the results. I'm with Susanna - can you suggest a way to drop a decade??
  • WordCustard Jan 25, 2010 @ 3:12 pm | delete
Well here's a secret... many new cameras have something called a beauty mode. Not that either of you need it, I hasten to add :) But it does wonders in evening out and brightening skin tone.
  • susannaduffy Dec 31, 2009 @ 7:48 pm | delete
Great info here on self portraits, but is there a secret tip on making myself look 10 years younger too? Blessed in an Angel's Last Tango (squidoo.com/angel-last-tango)
  • WordCustard Jan 1, 2010 @ 8:50 am | delete
If I knew it, I'd gladly share! Thank you so much for the blessing, sorry to see you and the other 2009 angels flutter off but will pay your lens a visit. Oh and Happy New Year!
  • Kate-Phizackerley Dec 30, 2009 @ 7:37 pm | delete
The best photography lens I have seen on Squidoo so far. Blessed.
(PS I had problems leaving a message - the Clearspring module seemed to be playing up.)

What a great idea for a lens. This will be in the Top Ten soon for sure! Now you'll have to do one about taking photos with your laptop camera.
