Self-publish Your Book or Seek a Publishing Deal - Pros and Cons

Publishing Options For New Book Writers

At an early stage in the writing process, new writers should think carefully about the likely publishing options open to them for their book. Some of us nurture dreams of becoming bestsellers and earning a fortune; our more prudent friends smile, wish us well, and think to themselves, dream on! To write and publish a book you need to be businesslike, from the outset.

But we are all entitled to be optimists, and if your book is targeted at a well-defined and sizeable readership, then I feel you owe it to yourself to offer it to real publishers and literary agents first, before taking the publishing risk on your own shoulders. If the draft or manuscript of your book offers a fresh viewpoint on a topic, has been professionally edited by a book editing service, and is submitted properly to those who market such work, then at least you have a runner in the race, albeit an outsider. And don't try just one publisher; submit to at least half a dozen, simultaneously. It will take time, it may not produce a deal, but at least you will have given your book a decent chance of a commercial send-off. Just like this spy thriller from Richard Cheesmar, a brand new author who recently released his début espionage and computer hacking novel.

Real Book Publishers and Literary Agents

Avoiding the Sharks in the Publishing Pool

Real publishers and literary agents, the kind who pay you rather than the reverse, are elusive fish and hard to catch. On the other hand, their dangerous and grasping cousins, the vanity bandits, dress up in all the same clothes, but can be attracted without even putting a hook on the end of the line. Just dangle your rod over the water and they'll leap out, with mouths open. Never in their lives will they have they been so moved by such bait. Your book is a masterpiece; you are indeed the next Shakespeare. You are also about to be taken on an expensive self-publishing journey that will empty your pockets and wallet, one step at a time, until there's nothing left.

Self publishing, in paperback form, or as an ebook, is nowadays relatively simple to do technically, and economical to achieve, but still demands that the text at the heart of the process is 'as good as it gets'. In other words, the writing itself remains the hard task; then follows the editing. Only after the creative work has editorially been 'put through the wringer' should technicians be invited on board to work their magic.

Book editing services can advise you at each stage of the process. They will mark your card as you prepare your original manuscript, then take an example of your writing and show you how to self-edit. At the submission stage, they can tweak your letter to potential publishers so that you avoid making the mistakes that novices exhibit when selling their own work. And once you have given traditional publishers the chance of a lifetime to have you as an author, and if they somehow fail to recognise your talent, you can self-publish a professional book, in a matter of weeks, at very reasonable prices. Don't be fooled by publishing packages offered by these bandits. The majority of them are worthless, using seductive waffle, aimed at taking your money, leaving you with all the risk, and a shedload of books to sell. Don't go there. Take advice from professional editors and bring your book to market the proper way.

I don't write books but self-publishing is good if you have business and marketing skills. Some people just have other companies publish their books because it takes the work out of having a great cover to draw readers in, advertising and pitching to various stores, etc. If you can charge the right amount for your book and promote your book online, you should do pretty well for yourself.

Self publishing is not only easier and cheaper, but indie authors will actually make more money going that route.

With up to 70% royalties at Amazon and SmashWords, you can make a decent living just by creating ebook versions of your novels and stories. It's an exciting time to be a writer! :)

This new dog care manual, lovingly written by a highly qualified dog trainer and lifelong owner of dogs, provides answers to many of the puzzling and sometimes worrying things that crop up as both owner and dog try to cope with what life throws at them.
