My Review of Leadership and Self-Deception

Learn from a story told about Tom Callum, a new manager to Zagrum. As Tom takes on his new role, he learns that things at Zagrum aren't done quite the way he is used to at other companies.

In a series of interviews with Bud Jefferson, Tom learns about "the box" and self-deception.

This book is written in an easily readible and understandable story format. The characters are realistic and engaging. The story is fun and informative. A great read if you want to become a better leader, spouse, parent, or teacher.

What Is Self-Deception?

And Why Is It Important To Understand?

I'll paraphrase from the book to set the stage for this lens:

An act contrary to what I feel I should do for another is called an act of "self-betrayal."
  • When I betray myself, I begin to see the world in a way that justifies my self-betrayal.

  • When I see a self-justifying world, my view of reality becomes distorted.

  • I then become self-deceived.

Once I am self-deceived, I:
  • Inflate others' faults.

  • Inflate my own virtue.

  • Inflate the value of things that I perceive will justify my self-betrayal.

  • Blame others for my original act of self-betrayal.

A Key Quote From The Book

"...people respond not primarily to what you do but to how you're being..."
