Smoking is one of the many habits that is difficult to get rid of. It is also one of the dangerous practices of people around the world. Many people still cannot seem to stop smoking though it is a given fact that numerous health risks that goes with it. Quitting the bad habit may be easier said than done but it is essential for the many benefits it can give such as longer life, enhanced stamina and energy as well as improved sense of smell and taste. These benefits do not only apply to those who smoke but also to those who suffer second-hand smoke.

If you are one of the many people who are planning to quit smoking but do not know how to start, here are self-help tips on how you can stop smoking.

The first thing you need to do is to acknowledge that you are indeed addicted to smoking. Many people do not know that they are hooked on the habit and cannot admit it. Studies show that if we get pleasure from a certain habit such as smoking, we tend to reject the fact that the habit is wrong and just continue doing it. However, once you accept the reality that smoking can do dangerous things in your health, you can have a reason to be motivated to start quit smoking.

Many self-help tips are available on the subject of smoking and if you are serious about quitting, make an effort to gather information about nicotine addiction so that you can set your mind on how to fight it.

Consult a doctor if necessary. Stopping an addiction is not simple and you may need advice from specialists. It is easier if you discuss with your doctor about health risks and the things you can do to be able to go through the process of quitting. You can consider the kinds of option you have such as pills, gums to overcome your cigarette cravings and you can try acupuncture or hypnosis. There are different support groups for smokers wherein you can learn useful information to help you with the process. Your doctor can give you suggestions on what course of plan is good for you.

Be responsible with the decision you made. Make a deadline and work with it. Tell your family members and friends that you are giving up smoking. This way, they can give support and help you go through with it. Remove everything that reminds you of smoking such as matches, cigarettes and ashtrays.

Deal with the problem one day at a time. Not being able to smoke for the rest of your life can be quite overwhelming. Tell yourself that you are not going to smoke today and if you accomplish the task, go on the next day and eventually it will be a lot easier for you to avoid cigarettes.

Forget old habits and create new ones. Try to stop your habits that are related to smoking. For instance, if you are used to having coffee while smoking, try to lessen the habit as well. Alternatively, you can adjust your coffee drinking habit in a way that you cannot have the chance to smoke. Instead of having coffee while leisurely reading a newspaper, drink coffee on the go.

*Try stepping outside your comfort zone once in a while. Great things come to pass when you make friends with your discomfort zone.
*Don't be afraid to make mistakes. There is an old saying that people who haven't made mistakes haven't made anything. Make mistakes and learn from them.
*Be aware of any negative thoughts you hold about yourself - challenge them, are they really true, if so what is the evidence? Are you giving yourself a hard time?
*Make an effort to try and look on the bright side of things. Purposely find something positive about the issue and focus on that. You can almost always see another side of things. It just depends where your bias is.
*Read some good uplifting books,
*Train yourself to finish what you start. Follow through - you owe it to yourself and others.
*Focus on the present moment. When you live in the past too much you stop living now.
*Learn what is important to you in life - is it love? Is it money? Is it your family? What do you love doing? Who/what makes you happy?
*Realize that setbacks and knocks are just a normal part of life. If life were brilliant all the time we would take it for granted and not appreciate it.
*Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could.. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.
