Self-Publishing Pro and Con For Entrepenurial Authors

Sometimes it is necessary for the entrepreneurial author to self-publish their book. This is also referred to as vanity publishing.

You, the entrepreneurial author, put all the money upfront to have your book published. Since you are incurring all the costs, you do not have to get your book approved by the publisher as you would with the traditional publishing method.

As I have been stressing you need to be careful on your selection of a publishing facility, because these publishers will take your money to produce X amount of books. In some instances, quality is overlooked.

Some publishers might offer you editing and formatting services. Remember, you are responsible for your book from A-Z.

Self-Publishing

As an entrepreneurial author and a self-publisher you will control every aspect of your authoring. You will create the book and market the book. When selecting your self-publishing house, look for the following:

  1. An affordable publishing house

  2. Good-quality work

  3. Print run minimum

  4. Print-on-demand option

  5. Distribution capability

  6. Decent royalty structure

Self-Publishing PRO

  • As with POD books, you are able to provide the reader with a "real book" with a cover. Reader can handle it and you can autograph it.

  • In most cases, author maintains complete control of the process.

  • Allows you to get a hard copy book without spending time, money and effort trying to convince a Publisher that your book is worthy of publishing.

  • Any book will be accepted and printed exactly as it is given to the publisher.

Self-publishing CON

  • The author will generally make only about 20% to 35% of the retail price after doing all the work.

  • The author invests a large amount of money in copies of the book and is solely responsible for selling them as well as storing and delivering them.

  • To get more copies will require a great deal of time and money to get the book republished and/or revised and published.

  • These publishers are commonly referred to as Vanity Publishers which is used as a slur in the Traditional Publishing industry. It is harder to create author credibility in many cases with a "vanity" published book.
