Self Tanning - you can do it at home!

I am an expert when it comes to sunless tanning... I have been faking a golden glow for over 5 years now.  Ever since I found out that both my grandfathers have skin cancer, I made the decision then to never bake myself in the sun again...

But, being the beauty conscious person that I am, I still wanted that golden glow like everyone else, I didn't want to be pasty white come summer time, so I started checking out my options.

Sunbeds were out of the question, in my book they were just as bad, if not worse, than lying in the sun unprotected.  So I looked to fake options and was pleasently surprised, there was plenty available and at varying prices, well within my price range.

I have learned so many tricks along the way, least of which are to never have a spray tan just after you've had your bikini line waxed, not a good look!

Anywho, I hope you enjoy my lense and check back often, as I will be bringing you plenty of tips and ideas on how you too can achieve a great tan without risking your health, because, lets face it, you can be nice and tanned, but whats the point if you are dying from skin cancer?

Take care

Lise

Top Tips and Tricks for a Beautiful Sunless Tan

Faking it works!

Faking it doesn't have to be scary... there are plenty of horror stories of self tanning gone wrong, but if you take note of these suggestions below, you can fake it without any consequences!
  • Top of the list... never, ever get a spray tan done just after any sort of waxing... the tan will not take and you will have patches and streaks galore!
  • If you are prone to dry skin, don't use a spray option, go for a cream, lotion or milk tan, this will ensure that your skin stays rehydrated and does not go flakey.
  • When it comes to spray tans, if getting done in a salon, go for the option of having a professional apply it... the spray tanning booths are not always accurate and many a time I have come out with streaking on my legs... a real person is always best!
  • If you make a mistake when applying your fake tan and get some buildup, soak a cotton ball in lemon juice and rub over the offending bit... the tan will rub away! Just be careful to not get it where you don't want to remove the tan... Lemon juice acts very quickly!
  • Another tip, if you have dry skin, moisturise half an hour before applying your tanning product and your skin won't dry out and the tan will last longer! Be sure to use a heavy moisturiser that soaks into your skin quickly and do wait that half hour, don't rush it.
  • Invest in some disposable rubber gloves, the clear kind... use these when applying any tanning product other than spray to avoid those orange hands, not a good look! This is a great tip and one that I love... it is so hard to wash your hands after you have applied tanning lotion, because you often either end up with orange hands or white hands that don't match the rest of your body!

Great tips here! I'm working on a totally faux glow right now for spring, and so far it's great. Couple of things I'd like to add!

--Mix and match products! I like to do lotions, creams, gels, and sprays at home and am actually using up to four products at a time right now. They all use the same active ingredient--dehydroxyacetone--so the color usually turns out the same. On days when I don't want to add more color, I use Jergens express mixed in my hands with some plain moisturizer. For a bit darker, I mix Neutrogena Sunless foam with moisturizer. I've heard mixed reviews about this Neutrogena tanner, but I personally love it. It smells great, and it watery enough to spread on really easy and fast, and is very moisturizing. It's a little sticky as it dries, but it goes away.
-As for the hands thing, I usually spread on with my hands, wash them afterwards, then dip a tissue in tanner and reapply to the backs of my hands and base of my wrists. Works great for me, and no gloves!
