How to save the world; from the chef's table
In the Central Susquehanna Valley where I live we are blessed with some of the nicest farmland in the country. I am like a kid in candy shop when visiting the farms that my products come from. It is very exciting to watch the process of food being provided to the community, straight from the farm to the fork!
How can buying local food help our environment? Well there are many reasons that buying local is important, the most obvious being a lowered carbon footprint of the food we eat. Since we have to eat every day, we make many decisions and there is plenty of opportunity to vote with our dollars. The average food item travels over 1,500 miles from farm to table resulting in increased energy costs associated with transportation and packaging. Keeping farms economically viable is also critical to preserving our beautiful rural landscapes and preventing overdevelopment. Buying local food helps ensure that farmland can remain active well into the future.

Emma's Food For Life
Our local, seasonal restaurant
Emma's Food For Life in Selinsgrove, PA was founded in 2007 as a way of sharing my vision and belief in sustainable community. We enjoy getting to know our providing farmers and their families and sharing the experience of providing good, wholesome food to our community. We also manage our own gardens in Winfield, PA on my parent's farm. This allows us to participate in every aspect of procuring food for our customers, from planting the seed to serving the final product.
In addition to this we also provide full catering services for both on and off site events. Now even catered events can be managed sustainably with food from your neighborhood!
Our food is fresher and more nutrient rich because food from local farmers does not have to travel far, often reaching you within 24 hours after being harvested. The sooner after harvest fresh foods are consumed, the more nutrients they retain. So, not only does the food taste better, but it is also healthier for us and for our community.
For those of you looking for a quiet place to relax, we have a wide variety of loose teas to enjoy at the restaurant or to take with you. We also have hard to find tea accessories. So relax, sit back and enjoy some delicious food and a flavorful cup of tea!

- Oh My Word! The Shrimp pizza with the Old Bay Seasoning I had Thursday afternoon was GREAT! I know that It is only a September lunch special and destined to be banished back into the recipe box, but please bring it back! Maybe in November. Think of all the poor people that have never sunk their teeth into into a Shrimp and Old Bay pizza. I know, you told me it was good, but I thought it sounded weired. I was wrong! I could have had it two weeks ago! I'll be back tomorrow before 3:00

- Dear Emma,
We had a very good meal, and look forward to returning many times. We especially liked the Spanikopita and the Mushroom melt. Our kids loved the Annie's mac n cheese. Two things that would have made it better: Could you consider some small side with the children's meals (say carrots/celery, or apple sauce?) Something just to make it a touch more of a meal? Also, the service was, quite honestly, pretty bad, sorry to say. Our waitress was very quiet, and though she tried, she didn't notice our water glasses, or really answer questions we had about the menu. Just wanted you to know, so you can make a great experience even better.

- We had a wonderful and unique lunch today in your restaurant. I think the only thing you didn't make from scratch were the plates! Delicious.
