How To Sell Your Blog - For Real Cash!

Lots of people have started blogs and then, a few months down the pipeline, just can't find enough time or energy to keep them as good as they used to be. Its here where the concept starts - most people just leave their blogs to wither and die, but why waste all that effort you put in? You could sell your blog for good money!

Keep reading to find out how!

Private Sale Vs. Selling To Company

Which is better: Selling your blog to a blog network, or to another individual?

You've decided to sell your blog; thats a step in the right direction! So the first thing you do is rush straight to Google and type in 'Sell Blog', 'Blog to Sell' or 'Sell Your Blog'. Those results are going to bring you up with some articles about people buying and selling blogs, some are individuals, some are large blog-buying companies. What route do you want to take?

Selling To An Individual
Advantages of making a private sale to an individual:

  • You will probably get paid more for it (big bonus!)

  • An individual is probably going to be more dedicated to carrying on your blog's good name, and making a really nice job of carrying on your work!

Now the disadvantages of selling to an individual:

  • They can be less trustworthy

  • They may keep emailing you for help on blog running, but you can always factor this extra 'cost' to you when you sell your blog!

Selling To A Blog-Buying Company
And so, carrying on(!), the advantages of selling to a company that specialises in buying blogs...

  • It will be a quick and easy transaction

Finally, the disadvantages of this:

  • They will be out for a large profits, so aren't likely to pay you as much for it

  • Your blog will probably lose its 'charm' now that is owned by a business just out to make a profit on it

So which is best?
Depends what you're after really! At the end of the day, its your decision all depending on how much time you have to try and sell your blog and how much money you want to make from it.

Personally though, I'd always go for the private sale.

Valuing Your Blog

How do you know what your blog is worth?

The next step is deciding on a price for your blog. Whilst its fun to try out tools such as Business Opportunities' 'How Much Is Your Blog Worth?' they do not give an accurate figure. So how do you value it?

-If your blog has a revenue stream (advertising on it, such as Adsense) then you can charge a number of months worth of this. For a new blog this might only be 3 months+ but for a much larger and well established blog it could be anything up to a couple of years. If your blog has been established for a year or 2, then its probably safe to charge 10-12 months worth of revenue for it.

-If you haven't got a revenue stream, then blogs can be valued at their potential earnings. If you have lots of traffic and your blog is in a niche that will bring in high paying adverts (like some types of finance, and health seems to be expensive advertising at the moment). You can use the same method as above, charging say 10-12 times your potential earnings, but its easy to overvalue if you are doing this and that might put off a prospective buyer - stay realistic!

Finally, it is important to note that, whatever price you value your blog at, it is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it!

Where To Sell Your Blog

Its alright knowing your blogs value - but where do you sell it?

The next step is working out how you can sell it. This can be done by posting the site for sale on blog forums or even just annoucing on your blog that it is for sale. However, by far the easiest way to sell your blog is on TheBlogExchange.com. Listing here will get your blog noticed by lots of interested parties; private buyers and companies alike. But the best reason, is that it is an auction website! You set the starting price, buy it now, or say if you want people to make you offers on it (even set a reserve so you know you're going to get a nice amount for it!). And wait, I think I forgot to mention: its free! You do get charged a percentage of the sale if the transaction goes ahead, but you can factor this into the price when you list it for sale. Many blogs have been sold very successfully this way.
