A Painting A Day - The Original and the Best

For me, there is absolutely no question that, in terms of delivering daily paintings for sale on a daily basis, the 'godfather' of the recent movement has been Duane Keiser with his very successful A Painting a Day - by Duane Keiser blog and his auction site on e-bay. The prices and sales of daily paintings that he achieved in this way left many other painters with open mouths.....

The only other artist I list in my blogroll section about 'Painting a Day Blogs' is Julian Merrow Smith with Postcard from Provence.
He followed fast on the heels of Duane, eschewed e-bay and initially sold direct - but now auctions direct and is an equally accomplished artist.

Both these men consistently posted a daily painting for well over a year before they started to ease back and miss the odd day now and again. Their combined success and press coverage triggered most of the susbsequent interest in the painting a day movement.

Neither of them have ever joined groups of other painters. Both continue to post a daily painting on most days each week. They are long time long term artists who paint virtually everyday and produce much larger works as well as daily paintings.

A Painting a Day
About A Painting a Day - Duane writes

I'm a painter from Richmond, Virginia. In December of 2004 I decided to make a painting everyday. I made a cigar box easel and carried it with me everywhere I went. When I saw something interesting I would stop to paint it. My subjects range from the whimsical to the sublime. For me, painting is a meditation on the extraordinary in the ordinary and on the alchemy between paint and subject.

......I made a painting each day from 12/10/2004 to 4/1/2006. For the time being I'll be posting them less frequently. Most of the paintings here are postcard-sized oil paintings which I sell on eBay.

His latest venture has been the development of Oddments (see below) - a thousand small paintings
Postcard from Provence
Postcard from Provence is a daily diary in paintings by British artist Julian Merrow-Smith, following the changing seasons of his adopted home in the Vaucluse, in the South of France. His still life paintings are inspired by objets trouvés, pottery and seasonal produce from the local markets whilst many of his landscape paintings represent scenes within walking distance of his studio.

The inspiration for the site came in 2004 with the arrival deep in the French countryside of a high-speed internet connection and Duane Keiser's pioneering a painting a day blog.

The daily painting blog format has since been taken up by hundreds of artists attracted by the commitment a daily practice demands and the opportunity to share their work with people all over the world.

Postcard from Provence has gone on to receive international acclaim in the media being featured in The New York Times, The London Times, USAToday and The Sunday Telegraph.

Site Traffic Statistics

Traffic to different websites featured as part of the "selling art online" series is being measured using compete.com. The charts produced as a result are then being embedded in to the different information sites (eg Online Art Galleries and Stores - Resources for Artists | Print Art on Demand - Resources for Artists

To do this the site has to have traffic which is sufficient to register with compete.com. Blogger based sites (ie blogspot.com in domain name) only ever feature if there traffic is above a certain level.

As a matter of principle, I only measure sites which you can apply to join - if the traffic is sufficient to generate data which can be measured.

Perspectives on Daily Painting #1

According to the Daily Paintworks site:
"Daily painting is not only the act of creating art as a full-time practice - it is a discipline that our artists hold to. Most of the artwork is done on a small format, allowing the artist to broaden their subject matter, perhaps quite different than their signature work. In the past several years, hundreds of artists have adopted this practice, creating a lively community of daily painters on the internet. Currently, there are many online galleries, discussion groups, workshops and retreats all about daily painting. Daily painters ostensibly paint everyday, with occasional breaks taken for research, study, experimenting with techniques as well as the events in everyday life.

WEBSITE: Daily Painters Gallery

" The Daily Painters Art Gallery was set up by Micah Condon. This is the fee-paying site which gew out of the original Daily Painters Group. The original site, for a brief time, introduced me to a wonderful range of artists - some of whom have ended up in my blogroll as a result. After the new group (this site) was set up I kept my subscription going for some time but confess I stopped it when the quality of the paintings seemed to deteriorate. However checking back this morning I can see that the quality has improved again and all the members blogs which I checked at random are producing small paintings on a regular basis and have been doing for some time.

It's really good to see that introducing some quality control measures makes this website much more meaningful. The overall number of members is controlled (current limit is 120) and individual members now have to demonstrate that they have produced daily paintings over a number of months before they are eligible for membership. The monthly membership fee is now set at $29. The site claims over 1,000 unique visitors per day to its home page and site wide over 3,000 visits/day. The presentation of the artists - either alphabetically or by location has also improved. I'll be subscribing again with a view to looking out for new artists to feature on this blog. "
(extract from Daily painters, paintings and paintworks - and where you can see them)

This site creates a traffic flow - to the blogs and eBay auctions of individual artists. People only have to subscribe once to get a daily email showing all the new work which has been posted. You can get an idea about how effective this site is at helping people to sell their work by looking at all the paintings in the galleries of individuals. Those which have sold are marked with a red spot.

WEBSITE Daily Paintworks- Invitation Only

Some groups have a limit on the number of members and/or are invitation only

" What I find very promising about the new Daily Paintworks group is that it is made up of established self-representing artists who have 'stayed the course' and developed 'the habit' of delivering a painting a day or producing on a regular basis. They have also had time to work out what they are trying to do, what they want to achieve and how they want to work with others. Some have gallery representation and some don't but they all do business online.

I very much like the emphasis on education and sharing that their site has - it also includes videos and details about workshops. Plus for me, scanning up to twelve good quality paintings each day is not a hassle and I have already subscribed for my daily e-mail. Apart from anything else it makes my visits to my 'regulars' much easier! "
(extract from Daily painters, paintings and paintworks - and where you can see them)
Daily Paintworks - Home
Daily Paintworks is an online gallery featuring twelve of the finest daily painters in the world, all with a common passion for creating art.

Each artist has their own blog/website on which you can view art for sale, a good portion of which are auctioned on eBay every week. The home page is updated on a daily basis with each artist's latest work - and delivred to the inbox of those people who subscribe.

The Daily Paintworks people make a commitment to paint and post a set number of new paintings each month. That's easier said than done when the profile you can get as a result means that demands for your painting take off! As a result, membership of the group changes on a periodic basis due to various other demands (such as major commissions, galleries, exhibitions and 'life' changes) which have to take precedent.

Perspectives on Daily Painting #2

"At the risk of offending quite a few people, I've never quite been able to understand why people talk about having a daily painting blog if they don't produce a painting every day. THAT was the original idea which captured people's attention. That was what made the blogs which did that actually stand out. Blogs like Duane Keiser's A Painting A Day and Julian Merrow Smith's Postcard from Provence literally did post a painting each day.

Don't get me wrong - I'm very happy with blogs that don't post a painting each day. Lots of the painting blogs that I really like viewing a lot do not post every day. The reason I like them is because of the way they paint - in their own individual and unique way.

What I'm talking about here is having your own idea about how to make art and presenting your own individual and unique appeal in your own unique way - while being prepared for the fact that other people may not actually 'get it' or might even resist your idea. It's about being true to your own way of doing things and delivering the visual equivalent of 'singing in your own voice'. "

Making A Mark comments on 'a painting a day' and 'daily painting'

in chronological order

Making a Mark: Will you be a success if you blog your paintings daily?
(Saturday, September 02, 2006)
Although it's entirely possible that the 'daily painting' thing is the latest e-bay type fad which has transferred off e-bay into the hands of individual artists, we should perhaps look at the bigger picture.

More and more artists are finding a way to market their work independently of organised institutions (eg traditional gallery; on-line art gallery). Some artists seem to be doing very well while others languish. However, the good news is that there's no need to go down the 'daily painting' route to do this.

Here are some of the things that I know or notice about people who seem to do well....................
Making a Mark: The "stickability' factor
Yesterday, in my post "Will you be a success if you blog your paintings daily?" I suggested a number of factors which I think help artists to sell their work on-line - independently of 0n-line galleries or auction type websites.

Today, I want to emphasise one more factor - the "stickability" factor.

The reason for emphasising it is I think maybe too little attention has been paid to the fact that a lot of the people who are now enjoying success with sales associated with their daily painting blogs - or other art projects - didn't necessarily achieve success straight away.............
Making a Mark: Art Calendar and "a painting a day"
The October edition of Art Calendar - the business magazine for visual artists - features a 6 page Art Market Report by Carolyn Proeber on "The New Internet Sensation: A Painting a Day". This covers the practical aspects of producing art on a daily basis and its marketing on the internet including the use of a 'painting a day' blog.
Making a Mark: Daily painters, paintings and paintworks - and where you can see them
(Wednesday, December 05, 2007)
The daily painting movement has seen more than a few sites come and go in the last 18 months or so - but I was extremely pleased yesterday to see the announcement of a new site - Daily Paintworks. This new site includes some of my favourite female artists who paint every day - Karin Jurick, Carol Marine, Sarah Wimperis and Belinda del Pesco - as well as a number of other names who will be well known to the daily painting fraternity.

For today's post, I've decided to place this new site in the context of all the other daily painting sites that I know of and to check out the current state of play as we near the end of 2007.
Making a Mark: The 1,000th Postcard from Provence
Congratulations to Julian Merrow Smith - today's the day of the 1,000th Postcard from Provence! I've got an interview with Julian in this blog post, but first let's recap on what's happened during the last 999 paintings.
Making a Mark: Keiser Collectors - a new website community for collectors of work by Duane Keiser
I'm a great believer in keeping a close eye on what Duane Keiser does. He's the man behind A Painting A Day who literally posted a painting each day from 10th December 2004 until 1st April 2006 and has continued to post a daily painting only slightly less frequently ever since. His work is now owned by a huge number of people - many of whom endeavour to collect it. They have rather a lot of competition - from each other and all would-be Keiser collectors!

Yesterday Duane announced the creation of Keiser Collectors, a new venture which creates a website community for collectors of Keiser original art.

WEBSITE: Daily Painters Webring

Daily Painter's Webring
The Daily Painters Webring is described as a community ring of painting a day artists. My sampling indicated that although a lot produce 'nearly every day' some are more like 'nearly every week'.

The webring works on the basis of gathering links in from lots of artists to give it status and then featuring one artist each day. It's a nice model insofar as it doesn't overload subscribers with information and everybody gets their 'day in the sun'. However the value of web-rings is debateable given Google's apparent stance on sites set up to list links .

WEBSITE: Daily Painters Marketplace

Daily Painters Marketplace
A Collective of World-wide self representing DAILY PAINTERS. All types of art work are being shown by our members. New Art being posted all through the day.
____________________

The Daily Painters Marketplace Blog was set up by Peggy Conyers as part of the fall-out of the original daily painters group It's described as a collective of self-representing daily painters.

It won blog of the day on 24th February this year (2007), at which point visits took off. It has averaged about 700+ posts each month since March this year. Your scrolling finger works over time on this one but the advantage is you see more details of the post at the same time as you view the image.

It has a long list of participating artists but not all of the ones I visited paint on a regular basis and some haven't painted anything for the blog for a very long time. Some are struggling to produce one a month. Judging by my random selection of artists I don't think all participating artists are actually participating and hence the blog is not very representative of daily paintings. However it looks like it may well work for those who want to highlight that they sometimes produce a small work.

Note: I checked again before posting this comment in February and the same comments as made above still apply.
Guidelines for Members of the DAILY PAINTERS MARKETPLACE blog
# Must Post daily if possible. We are a blog for the Daily or Almost daily painter.

Notable painting a day blogs

These are people who really are posting paintings to their blogs on a virtually daily basis.

WEBSITE: The Worldwide List of Participants in the Daily Painters Movement

Daily Painters Guild - The Master List of Worldwide Daily Painters
The list of worldwide artists described as "Daily Painters" is maintained by the Daily Painters Guild.

My sampling at the end of 2007 and again in February suggested that it probably needs a regular review and audit.

It's certainly a list of artists. They certyainly all have blogs BUT
- relatively few paint and post every day (a LOT post less than 5 times a month)
- even fewer produce daily paintings
- and some resort to posting photos of their pets to fill space.

In other words - put simply - this is NOT a list of daily painters.

Daily Painting - Tips from different perspectives

Potential advantages to an artist are:

* scope to provide a steady income stream
* time to complete larger works
* striving to complete a painting every day can improve your artwork

Key tips for a 'painting a day' artist include:

* discipline: make the commitment to creating a painting a day
* pricing: keep your artwork affordable
* internet and other systems: make sure all communication, billing, payment and shipping systems are simple, reliable and fast
* marketing: build and keep viewers interest; develop a 'personal' relationship with your audience and buyers

"A Painting A Day" - advice, information and reviews

Keiser - On Painting: On A-Painting-a-Day (Part 1)
Over the last few years I've been asked a lot of questions about my Postcard Painting project and how it got started etc so I figured I'd write down some of my answers in this blog from time to time:

Several years ago I sat in my studio and looked at several small oil studies I had made and I wondered what I should do with them..........
Keiser - On Painting: On A-Painting-a-Day (Part 2)
Since I began my blog, there have been many dozens of painters (and potters, draftsmen, photographers) who have borrowed the painting-a-day (PAD) template for their own work, with varying degrees of success. I have a mixed reaction to this...........
Keiser - On Painting: On A-Painting-a-Day (Part 3)
As I watch the PAD movement grow into the hundreds (thousands?) I thought it might be an appropriate time to look more deeply into what, exactly, the PAD idea is. In each of the next few posts I'd like to talk about one aspect of the practice of making a painting each day (as opposed to the business side of it.)
eBay Guides - Painting A Day
So you've heard about this Painting-A-Day phenomenon, but want to know what's really going on, and why everybody is so excited about it
Daily Painting: A Sideways Look at the painting a day art trend
Just from the numbers it's easy to see that daily painting is popular, but is it a good or bad thing for artists in the long run?

Daily Painters Discussion Groups

Google Groups - Daily Painters
This Discussion Group is open to anyone who would like to participate in discussions about the production of 'daily paintings' which in all honesty has a very loose definition, and despite what its name implies, exists to support those in the art community who consider themselves participants in the Daily Painters Movement which is generally characterized by the discipline of completing "small, postcard-sized finished works" on a daily basis, or at a pace that approaches this. Actually painting at this pace or frequency of completion is not required.

This Google Group is, by definition, a Discussion Group and is not a website, nor is it associated with any particular website or any specific members of any pay sites or web galleries.

The members here discuss all manner of topics from The Movement itself, to drying techniques, to shipping, to surfaces, brushes, theory, marketing and even a little HTML help for web pages. This discussion group exists as a means of support and community among like-minded artists regardless of location, favorite medium or other such differences.

Hi - I signed up for Redbubble which is a great site but they don't ship to China (where I live) or the UAE (where I used to live) or Vanuatu (also where I used to live)

I am looking for a site that will upload my artwork and then handle all the printing and postage out to customers, providing me with a markup as a way of earning money on the sale. They must be able to post to the UAE, China and Vanuatu; as well as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, US and UK.

Does anyone have any ideas? Where do i find a service that will do this for me?
