A Big Difference Between Selling Digital Products And Physical Products

For many years, I built and operated a number of different companies. Amongst them were a candle factory, a construction company, a board game production, and a fish store. Not one of them could come close to providing the freedom and ease of operation given to me by selling digital information products.

Although every one of these ventures gave me the freedom of being my own boss, they enslaved me in other ways. If you're not careful, running a business can do that to you.

With the candle factory, I required a large warehouse space for my wax vats and candle-hanging racks. This meant I had to make more money just to cover my overhead costs. It also added a lot of pressure on those months when candle sales were down.

Running a construction company came with the burden of having to hire and train employees. The constant supervision of workers whose reliability was often questionable, was like a set of shackles around my ankles. The board game company would have been a great venture to run, if it hadn't been for the high cost of creating short-run printings of the games and boxes. With costs increasing, it was impossible to compete with the giants in the industry.

Being the proprietor of a fish store ranks as the worst of my ventures - and not just because of the smell. Operating a retail outlet snares you into the same 9 to 5 grind as those poor souls with a job. Even worse, the hours are much longer when you're the boss.

1. Work From Anywhere In The World. Since you're selling digital products, you don't need a physical presence - no storefront, no warehouse, no office. All you need is an Internet connection, which can be found just about anywhere. "Have laptop, will travel!"

In the last few years, Rieko and I have been in Bali, Malaysia, Singapore, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland. In fact we've been back to the Swiss Alps just about every year, and once spent a whole month there going on some fantastic treks. All it took was a little time at the local tourist bureau to check up on my online business.

This Winter, we'll be sipping lattes in the old coffeehouses of Vienna, before zipping over to Klosters for a White Christmas.

2. Low Cost, Low Risk. My offline businesses often cost me tens of thousands of dollars to set up. With many businesses never recouping that capital outlay - and the rest taking at least 2 years to break even - I often had sleepless nights.

By contrast, my first website for selling digital information products cost me less than $100 to set up - and it turned a profit within the first few days. All you need to get started is a website and an autoresponder.

With a payment processor and an autoresponder taking care of the admin work, everything runs on autopilot. You only put in the work to set it up, and after that you can basically leave it alone.

I have a number of such online income generators set up - many of which I don't even do anything to promote anymore. They just steadily make money for me. It's this automation that lets Rieko and I relax at hot springs - far from an Internet connection.

4. No Employees, No Hassles. With most of your operation running on autopilot, you don't need any employees. You'll never have to put up with the hassles of constantly supervising semi-motivated staff.

For those tasks that you'd rather pass on to someone else, you can always find a place to outsource your work. I get all my e-covers created by a graphics designer - which saves me a lot of bothersome fiddling with Photoshop.

5. Create Long-Term Passive Income. As an infopreneur, you only need to create a product once. You might spend a few weeks putting together an e-book, but after that it will keep selling for many years to come. Do the work once, get paid for it over and over again.

I've come up with an idea one day ... written a report the next day ... and started selling it on the third. It's wonderful watching a product you created in just a few days, selling for months and months - without you lifting a finger.
