How To Sell My Timeshare

Tips To Help You Sell Your Timeshare Successfully

Sometimes a timeshare just doesn't work out like you thought it would. In times like these, I will sell my timeshare and turn it into cash. Luckily, because of the Internet, there are now who knows how many forums where this transaction can be facilitated. There are numerous bulletin boards that are devoted exclusively to people who want to buy, sell, and trade timeshares nowadays. Isn't the world wide web lovely? I think so.

The first thing I do when I'm going to sell my timeshare is I think about what it is really worth. Think about things like how much do you use it? Some people of course buy one and then a few years later they realize that they don't like the vacation spot or that they just haven't made use of their various weeks enough for it be actually worth what they paid for it. This is a very common occurrence and one I can sympathize with.

Is This Why You Bought Your Timeshare in the First Place?

Another thing that happens is that you just get such a hard sell that in your best moment you think it's a good decision to buy, only to find out later you paid too high a price or you just don't even really want to use that as a vacation spot. Timeshare sales people are quite good at what they do, because there's so much money to be made in that field. Many people end up regretting their purchase not long after they make it. They then turn frantically around and try to sell it only to find out that their timeshare is worth maybe 50% less on the secondary market than they thought. It could even be a lot less than that depending on things like the terms and conditions and other legal aspects of the contract.

Did Your Maintenance Fees Go Sky-High?

I would also sell my timeshare if it turned out to be not affordable. Let's say the maintenance fees get hiked up significantly to the point where I can't even pay those anymore. That may be the number one reason people sell their timeshares. At theis point they will often turn to the online forums that I previously spoke about in order to try to recover some percentage of the original value purchased.

The number one place I would probably suggest for selling your timeshare would be somewhere that is exclusively geared towards this "sub-culture". Try to find a bulletin board or exchange site that has been around a while and has a reputable community of users. Even if you don't end up selling it there, you can definitely learn a lot of the ins and outs of the business. The more you know, the more you will be able to get for your deed.

Selling Timeshare on Craigslist and eBay

Then there's places like Craigslist and eBay. These places have a reputation for not being quite as good venues for selling, but certainly lots of deals have been done through these channels. Especially with Craigslist, be very wary of scammers. The number one thing they will probably try to pull on you is to get some of your personal information and tell you very urgently that they have to do this quick and they're ready with the money so please let's go. They'll send you a fake check or money order for more than you want and then will pretend it was a mistake. Then they'll try to get you to send them back the difference. The money they sent you was not real and will all disappear from your bank account sometime after you have already sent real, good money to them. You uhave just been robbed. So, watch out for these people. But there are lots of legit buyers that I sell my timeshare to as well. So, I still believe it's the best way to go if you're in that situation. Just get knowledgeable.

Be Wary of Free Services

There are also a lot of free services out there that will claim to be able to value your timeshare for you. I haven't used these sites but I am definitely a bit skeptical of them. How can an automated program really give a value on something as complex as a timeshare? Any numbers I believe should be treated with a grain of salt, but this could be a starting point, I suppose. It could just satisfy a little curiosity or give a ballpark estimate. I suspect that some of these sites have some ulterior motive, for instance to lowball you on their "objective" valuation and then offer to buy it from you for a lot less than it's worth. I'm just speculating here, but obviously whenever there's money to be made different schemes will develop.

These are just some the things I would think about if I were going to sell my timeshare nowadays. The main thing that's new is that there's a great electronic marketplace serving both buyer and seller. If you know how to navigate it, then you should do well.
