Routed!

Welcome to FSU Football. I'm an FSU grad (1991) and can't get enough Seminole football. This lens is full of links, opinions and other 'Nole football goodness. I will, from time to time, post commentary on specific games, issues and entire seasons - and most certainly will comment on any bowl game action.

Way back in 1991, I saw Deion and his limo in front of the Doak (in fact, I saw the Deion limo pull up to Deviney Hall to pick up a girl) and Casey Weldon play... I've eaten at Buffalo's, lived in Smith Hall with no A/C and was a Freshman in 1988 when the Noles were pre-season #1 and got beat by Miami 31-0 opening day...

I am also the proud owner of a Renegade doll that does the War Chant...

I love Seminole Football!

Can't wait for '09

What an up and down season. I'm already pondering what will happen next year (sorry, terrible pun). One or two key wins would have completely changed this season, but it just didn't happen. At least we're bowling again... 27th time in a row for Coach Bowden.

Season Record 9-4 (5-3)

The Final Wrap Up:
Clearly the Seminoles were a young team this year (youngest offensive line in NCAA) and are building for the future. If all goes well, that future should arrive next season. As for this year ,it was one of growth and learning - one victory against either Wake or GT turns this into an outstanding year, but the offense simply went off the tracks in the 2nd half. My prediction of 9 wins came true and I'm going to stick with that pattern and say the Noles will win 11 games next year and resetablish themselves in the top 10.

09/06/08 vs. Western Carolina Tallahassee, Fla.
W 1-0 (ACC 0-0) 69-0. Why not 79? Bottom line is they got it done.

09/13/08 vs. Chattanooga Tallahassee, Fla.
W 2-0 (ACC 0-0) 46-7. Why not 56-0? Either way, 2-0 is 2-0. Bring on Wake!

09/20/08 vs. Wake Forest Tallahassee, Fla.
L 2-1 12-3. 8 quarters at HOME against Wake with no touchdowns. I'm sad.

09/27/08 vs. Colorado Jacksonville, FL
W 3-1 39-21. Tasty win with a surprisingly strong running game gives me high hopes for the rest of the season.

10/04/08 at Miami Miami, FL
W 41-39. Old school Miami/FSU game in the middle of a crazy rain storm. This game was flat out fun to watch, but almost gave me a heart attack.

10/16/08 at North Carolina State Raleigh, NC
W 26-17 I missed most of the game b/c I was getting a tour of ESPN with an old friend (how cool was that!). Got home in time to see the last 5 minutes of what looked like... the noles escaping with a win. Good enough!

10/25/08 vs. Virginia Tech Tallahassee, Fla.
W 30-10 The game was on ABC regional which means I watched part of the Michigan game. The 'Noles made Mark May's #1 play on SportCenter this week. That + a Win= Seminole Goodness.

11/01/08 at Georgia Tech Atlanta, GA
L 31-28 Not sure what to say other than.. doh! A fumble in the end zone to lose the game? That hurts.

11/08/08 vs. Clemson Tallahassee, Fla.
W 41-27 I was in the air on my way to San Diego and missed the game. We won and that made me happy.

11/15/08 vs. Boston College Tallahassee, Fla.
L 27-17 Teams that cause fumbles and get interceptions but can't convert don't win football games. That's the Noles against BC.

11/22/08 at Maryland College Park, MD
W 37-3 A dominant performance against a decent team in Maryland. The big story of course... Myron Rolle is a Rhodes scholar. How about that... and the GATORS are next!

11/29/08 vs. Florida Tallahassee, Fla.
L 45-15 Dominated. Doh. The bonus of course, was watching BC beat Maryland to end any hopes of an ACC title shot.

12/27/08 Champs Sports Bowl vs. Wisconsin Orlando, Fla.
W 42-13
I was worried in the first half - the Badgers can run the ball really well and I figured they were going to loosen the Noles up before going deep. It didn't happen and the Noles gave us our best glimpse yet of good things to come. The game was a terrific holiday present to all of you (and me) Seminoles fans. Sweet victory.

Bobby Bowden/We Are Marshall

As you can tell from this lens, I'm a pretty big Seminoles/Bobby Bowden fan. A few nights ago I watched "We Are Marshall" and learned something wonderful about Coach Bowden that I didn't know. It was a great scene from a very engaging film. It's also worth mentioning that an FSU grad wrote the screenplay.

Coaching legend Bobby Bowden of Florida State University was the head coach at West Virginia University during the 1971 season. In memory of the victims of the crash, Mountaineers players put green crosses and the initials "MU" on their helmets. Bowden allowed Lengyel and his assistants access to game film and playbooks to acquaint themselves with the veer offense, a variation of the option offense which aids teams with weak offensive lines after Lengyel discovers that the team is unable to run the Power I formation he favored. Lengyel credits Bowden with helping the Young Thundering Herd recover. Bowden reportedly became emotional while viewing the movie, and has said that he was the original candidate for the Rick Tolley coaching job.

1994 Comeback...

Pity the Gators

2007 Season Archive

Final record is 7-5 (ACC 4-4).

The final wrap up... this had to be the most uneven FSU team in years.. I'd describe the offense as having moments of goodness followed by total confusion. Signs of life late in the season (until the Gator debacle) give me hope for next year. The defense was good, but clearly not good enough. With an offense like that, they needed to be brilliant. When a 60 yard field goal is the most exciting thing you get excited about, something is wrong. Next year will be better, 2 wins better I think.
  • Sept 3 @ Clemson. L 24-18 0-1
The first half was unwatchable. I almost gave up... almost! I hung in until the bitter end when I was disappointed at myself for not changing shirts earlier in the evening. Now I have to burn my gray FSU Football t-shirt. Damn. One and done... we dropped out of the top 25.
  • Sept. 8 UAB TALLAHASSEE W 34-24 1-1
I don't have ESPNU and didn't see this game.. .thank god - reading the summary I think watching would have given me a coronary. Barely able to beat UAB, trailing 17-0 at the half. And as a bonus, we lost our starting tailback. Nice. A win is a win though.
  • Sept. 15 at Colorado Boulder, CO W 16-6 2-1
The most ridiculous demonstration of football I've been around in my life." Jumbo Fisher's quote just about says everything you need to know. The Defense almost threw a shutout. My motto for the 2007 season: "A Win is a Win"
  • Sept. 29 vs. Alabama Jacksonville, FL W 21-14
In what will either go down as Xavier Lee's coming out party or yet another installment of the Wally Pipp story, the 'Noles got it done in a big way. An interesting side note is that there were more fans in attendance than the 2004 super bowl and any Georgia-Florida game... so we've already beaten the Gators this year.
  • Oct. 6 NC State TALLAHASSEE W 24-10
Sadly, I didn't see this game and was "watching" online with Yahoo gametracker.
  • Oct. 11 at Wake Forest Winston-Salem, NC L 24-21
I didn't even know the game was going on - I am officially not a true fan. Obviously. At least it wasn't 31-0 again.
  • Oct. 20 MIAMI TALLAHASSEE L
What happened? Weren't we winning at half-time? How fricken lame is it that the FSU/Miami game wasn't even on TV - not even ESPN2. I can't live like this.
  • Oct. 27 DUKE TALLAHASSEE W 25-6
There was a time, in a galaxy far, far away when the Noles would beat teams like Duke 73-3. Not this decade. But a win is a win. BC up next....
  • Nov. 3 at Boston College Chestnut Hill, MA W 27-17
Did you see it? I saw it - I saw old school Seminole football peek it's head though the curtains. I knew something was different early when the 'Nole offense pulled off a double reverse/flea flicker. Now that was fun. Va Tech on deck...
  • Nov. 10 at Virginia Tech Blacksburg, VA L 41-20
Outscored 20-0 in the 4th quarter pretty much says it all. Why is it that their freshman QB gets it done, and ours didn't? I'm not impressed with the quote from Saint Bobby... "I didn't expect to see the second coming of Vick" - ummm, where to start with that one.
  • Nov. 17 MARYLAND TALLAHASSEE W 24-16
Bobby's 300th win as he also clinched is 31st winning season in a row. That certainly puts some things into perspective! Now, a thanksgiving win against the Gators and all will be well in Seminole Territory.
  • Nov. 24 at Florida Gainesville, FL : 45-12
WAIT A DADGUM minute here! I thought that the game was officially over and you automatically win when you kick a field goal of 60 yards or longer... isn't that a rule? Please?
  • Bowl Game vs. Kentucky minus 25 (umm, 36) players. L
I was shocked and happy that the 'Noles played as well as they did against Kentucky. Playing 36 men down, I figured it would be a blow out like everyone else watching. They almost pulled it off.

Emerald Bowl Champions!

  • Sept 4 Miami @ Miami W (1-0)
Rushing for 5 yards won't get it done this year.. but a win is a win.. AND WE'LL TAKE IT! Ignore Corso's predictions - he's better when he's acting like a homer and rooting for the 'Noles.
  • Sept 9 Troy @ Home W (2-0)
Close call - why is it that elite teams have troubles with unknowns? Is it arrogance? I'm taking the Win on this one either way!
  • Sept 16 Clemson @ Home L (2-1) - What a horrendous game. Even so, they had a chance to win at the end..but surprise, surprise, gave up a big play! Getting caught so off guard in a pressure situation isn't all that acceptable for a top 10 team.. OH YEA - they aren't a top 10 team anymore!
  • Sept 23 Rice @ Home W (3-1) - And I quote... "It's not like it was Notre Dame out there"
  • Oct 5 NC State @ Raleigh L (3-2) - Chuck Amato must have the Semionles playbook. Wait, that's not fair - maybe the 'Noles just stink this year! 2 losses, both with my jersey on - I may have to burn it.
  • Oct 14 Duke @ Durham W (4-2) - The best thing about beating Duke on this day was Florida losing to Auburn :) It's nice to see that the 'Noles can beat up on Duke and Rice. Let's schedule more of those.
  • Oct 21 Boston College @ Home L (4-3) Horrible loss, sitting in a sports bar in San Fran watching helplessly with no available 'Nole gear to put on or take off. Cool black jerseys. Remember that year, when the 'Noles had a losing record but black shirts. Yea, that sucked.
  • Oct 28 Maryland @ College Park L (4-4) The good thing about being 4-4 is that it is perfectly symmetrical. It's gotten so bad that even wide right would have been an improvement over a blocked field goal kick.
  • Nov 4 Virginia @ Home W (5-4). Xavier Lee's day, the Noles rolled old school style 33-0. I was on a plane flying back from Dallas and haven't even seen highlights.
  • Nov 11 Wake Forest @ Home L (5-5). This game got so bad that ABC stopped showing it. Not sure what to say about how terrible they looked tonight. I even bought a new 'Nole football t-shirt for the game tonight.
  • Nov 18 Western Michigan @ Home - W (6-5). Bowl eligible, skippidy doo da! Gettin ready for a Gator upset special.
  • Nov 25 Florida @ Home L (6-6). Bobby almost pulled it off - the kick off return that wasn't could have been the play of the year. This game was 20 points closer than it should have been - the defense played an amazing game against a very good team. A Gator team that has no shot at playing for a national championship :) (small salvation).
  • Dec 27 The Emerald Bowl - Win! Where do I start.. where the hell has Booker been all my life. Why did it take all season for Jeff to throw to Carr? Who in the world thought playing a bowl game on a baseball field was a good idea? We Win! Great way to wrap up an ugly season.

Wide Left, Wide Right and Bonnnnggggg

Can the Noles beat Penn State?

Here's the thing - after they lost their 3rd in a row and gotten squashed by the Gators, I thought they were dead. I'm baffled at how they rallied together and managed to handily beat Va Tech a few weeks ago. I can't imagine that week of practice, or what Bobby said to them that made the respond like they did.

So... I have no idea if they'll manage to beat Penn State. I haven't had a chance to watch the Lions play this year - but have heard how good Robertson is and what a versatile QB he can be. The Noles usually are able to contain scramblers like they did with the Vick brothers over the years better than they can stop the long ball.

The defense should be fast enough - the only question is - can the offense actually score in this game?

Either way, I'm going with the Noles.

Prediction: Noles 17 Nittany Lions 14

Update I was a true believer... but dadgummit... losing by a field goal should be the Noles National Anthem. What a game!

Key observations...

-All I want for Christmas is Mickey Andrews DEFENSE...
-Michael Robinson got his bell rung... what tough guy.
-Drew Weatherford grew up a lot last night - very impressive poise - bodes well for the next few years...
-Kicking sucks the life out of great games (when you lose).
