Senate Passed A Bad Health Care Bill

Senate Bill Is Bad For Healthcare

Senate passed a bad healthcare bill

The Senate passed a bad healthcare bill in the wee hours of the morning on Christmas Eve. It isn't the Christmas present we were all hoping for. The bill passed at 1 a.m. Christmas Eve morning. Why the rush? Why the secrecy? The Senate's healthcare bill gives omnipotence to Medicare and Medicaid agencies in determining what kind of care can be given and what price will be paid for care. The bill is loaded with "pork" that lured many Senators to vote for it. Many Senators said they hadn't even had time to read the entire bill before the vote. Public opinion polls showed the American public opposes this bill, but the Senate didn't listen once again. Senate Democrats listened to the payouts, not their constituents.

Power In The "Pork"

We, the Taxpayers, Pay For These Gifts

Healthcare PayoutsThese are just a few examples of offerings to Senators to get the 60 votes needed to pass this bill. Click the picture to read further.

While these may be great ideas that need attention, they do not belong in a healthcare reform bill. If this bill didn't stand on its own merits, it shouldn't have passed.

I do not argue that reform is needed, but this is not the way to acheive it. There are many areas of healthcare that need to be changed, but a sweeping reform bill like this one is not the solution. This bill leaves too many doors open and too many loopholes to close.

I'd tell you to write to your Senators, but that doesn't seem to be important to them. I will let them know how important it is to me on Election Day 2010.

Yes, you're right!

Sophie says:

It is a bad health care bill because the process in passing it and getting it approved is also bad! I think this situation likens to the trial of christ's crucifixion where they did it when everyone else was sleeping and in the wee hours of the night. So, obviously, they're hiding something and they don't want the opinion of the people. This is not right, it is very wrong!!!!

moscorp says:

Should be able to get enough republican in ofice in November to over turn this mostrosity

roadroamer says:

Why they would pass something before even reading it in full beats me. They have a responsibility, that's their job, and they aren't doing it. We should be up i arms about this.

Brookelorren says:

Ooh I forgot... we also have five years for states to assert their tenth-amendment rights to get out of this. I think that some states will. My husband is applying to law school in Texas... we think they will probably opt-out.

Brookelorren says:

Since the only provisions that are really going into play in the next several years, there is still time to overthrow this thing. We can vote out everyone that voted for this bill this fall and then there will still be time to pass another bill nullifying this one. It is taking us 10 years to pay for five years of service... we can't afford it.

KimGiancaterino says:

This bill is a disgrace. Every person who voted for it should be booted out of office. Yes, we need reform, but that's not what's happening with this bill. It's a power grab, pure and simple. By the time most U.S. citizens realize what's really happening behind the "feel good" rhetoric, it will be too late.

sittonbull says:

Adequate Health Care remains one of the main concerns for all of us. History has shown us that every government run program from the Dept.of Energy to the Post Office to Social Security has had dismal management with little oversight. Consequently... as much as we would all love to believe this bill would be well designed and well managed and in the interest of all people... I have no confidence at all that congress, & the senate with the executive branch have the knowledge, skills or intent to draft and manage a health care program that will give us better care than we have... even tho' it will cost much more than is presently being spent.

Mickie_G says:

Will the Senators and Congressmen be on the same plan that they are making for US?

BarbRad says:

As you have pointed out, some states (those whose senators' votes needed to be bought) get more perks than others in this bill. I live in an area with high living expenses, but the Medicare reimburses our doctors less that some areas with lower costs fo living because we have been labeled rural. It appears that Montana's rural areas will get higher reimbursements than California's "rural" area doctors. Also, this health care isn't free. Many of those who could not afford insurance before and didn't buy it may now be forced to buy insurance at even higher prices than before or pay a penalty. American's taxes will go up right away, but the benefits of this bill will not kick in until 2013. Those are just a few reasons why I don't think this is a good health care reform bill.

jeffwend says:

This bill is terrible. Some kind of reform is OK, but passing a very bad bill just so Obama can say he passed one is just wrong. Especially when he had to buy so many of the votes. What he promises, he simply can not deliver on.

Joan4 says:

This is terrifying to me! We can only change it with prayer and voting! There is simply no other way to communicate with Washington. The politicians are not listening!

OhMe says:

This Healthcare Bill really has me scared for our country. My husband is an old timey doctor who cares deeply for his patients but more and more he is not being allowed to treat them the way he feels is necessary. This Healthcare Bill will cost us more money in the long run with less efficient care for everyone.

bethd821 says:

This bill gives too much power to Medicare and Medicaid agencies. Since when do insurance and government officials know how to practice medicine? How can they know what treatment is best for the patient? Their decisions will be based on costs alone. This can't be good for us.

No way, Monkeybrain!

skiesgreen says:

Americans need to wake up to what's good for them. We have a system in Australia that takes care of EVERYONE, irrespective of their income, station in life or age. I am sick of reading about Americans who are paying thousands of dollars for urgent medical treatment when they simply cannot afford it or who are going without for the same reason.

The senators who claim they didn't have time to read it are employing opposition tactics and they probably belong to the other side. Hilary and Bill Clinton studied the Australian model which has been going for some 40 odd years with great success and I am sure that the government will not be implementing something too far different to it.

Anyone in health who opposes this bill is not caring for those who are unable to get the right kind of help when required. Also the medications are an appalling example of how backward America is in health, We buy drugs for a fraction of the cost due to our system. In America many people cross the border into Canada to get medications they can afford or buy off the Internet and get God knows what.

Stazjia says:

As an English person living in the UK, I find it hard to understand how Americans who can't afford healthcare insurance or don't qualify for the present free healthcare, can object t a proposal that gives them and their family guaranteed treatment. I always remember an American online friend saying she lived in fear of her young son having a serious accident or illness because they couldn't afford insurance but earned to much to get it paid for.

I guess I just don't understand the nuances here.

mysticmama says:

Finally a step in the right direction!
As someone who is middle class & makes too much to qualify for public aid health care, but not enough to afford private over-priced health insurance, it will be a real relief to finally get some help that is desperately needed.

As a person who has serious health issues, but have been uninsured for 3 years, I am so thankful that we are finally starting to move in the right direction, where maybe every American citizen can finally afford quality health care instead of only the very rich & the very poor!

The American Health care system has been a disgrace to all American for decades...how can America claim to be the greatest Country in the world when most of it's citizens can't afford quality health care?

I'm so tired of all of the fear tactics those rich health related business', doctors & greedy insurance companies have used to make American confused & misinformed about universal healthcare... I thank god that this bill is finally moving forward & maybe soon I can go to the doctor & get the hip surgery I've needed for years but could not afford!

I think that you shouldn`t be forced to buy health care, what if you can`t afford it? You would have health care, but also debt from the bills to pay for it. What happened to freedom of choice? (First Amendment)

Down through time, it seems every generation chooses to ignore the lessons of history, even though they are taught to us as children in stories like Aesop's fables, etc. & then later through studying history. When we want something badly, the confidence man/woman can make us believe they can give it to us... Let's see now... the Pied Piper led the children where?? If you believe the leadership of this congress and senate and executive branch has your interest at heart with this health care bill... I have some land in Lower Beaufort county I would love to sell you... cheap (at low tide of course)!

A lot of dirty deals were made to get this turkey passed. Since our senators and representatives are no longer responding to letters, faxes, phone calls, emails, or town hall meetings, I will have to let them know with my vote. It is completely unconstitutional.

The UK's National Health Service is expensive but so is a population that can't contribute to a nation's economy because of poor health. It's one reason some of those 19th century industrialists took great care of their workers - it made economic sense. I suppose that has been the reasoning behind Americans getting health insurance as part of their package from an employer. Now that this becoming more rare - what can people do who can't afford the thousands required for major surgery, cancer treatment, etc? Die appears to be the answer. The NHS has made a terrific difference here in the UK. Nobody fears illness or injury because they can't afford treatment. Sure, you might not get cutting edge, innovative treatment that hasn't been proved as effective but you will get the regular treatment for your condition.
