Fresh cut flowers come in an enormous variety of colors that typically vary between purples to reds to yellows. White is very common, but browns, blues, and greens are rare, and blacks so rare that they are essentialy non-existent.

Mother's Day's origins have been traced as far back as ancient Greece and Rome. The Greeks used the occasion to honor the goddess Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. The celebration, made on the Ides of March with offerings in the temple of Cybele, continued for three days and included parades, games and masquerades.

Early Christians honoring the Virgin Mary, called the Mother of Christ, celebrated a Mother's Day type of festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Christians in 15th century England also celebrated a special day in honor of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Eventually that day was renamed Mothering Sunday, since common observance of the day had extended to include all mothers. In those times, many people would return to their home town and church where they were born and celebrate with family. The modern holiday celebrated in North America is credited to Anna Jarvis. She carried on urgent writing campaigns for a national Mother's Day to celebrate motherhood. In 1907, Anna Jarvis passed out 500 white carnations at her mother's church--St. Andrew's Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia--one for each mother in the congregation. Jarvis advocated Mother's Day to be on the second Sunday in May, and on May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a law doing that. Carnations have come to represent Mother's Day, as symbols of a mother's pure love. In common custom red carnations are worn if one's mother is living, and white if she is not.
