On December 11, 1620, the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. Of the 102 who were on the Mayflower ship that brought the Pilgrims to America, only 56 had survived by the following fall (1621). The others had perished in that first very difficult winter.

What's more, Sara Hale pressed President Abraham Lincoln to declare the final Thursday of each November as day of prayer and national thanksgiving. Thus, Thanksgiving Day as an annual holiday was born.

These days, we think of Thanksgiving Day as a traditional day of gathering with family and friends, parades, watching football, and feasting on a huge meal of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, and a host of other scrumptions foods! It's our modern-day way of giving thanks for all that we have each year.
