Keeping Your Roses Fresh

11 Tips For Making Your Bouquet of Roses Last Longer

A beautiful bouquet of a dozen red roses is the perfect way to light up a room.

And chances are you'll want to enjoy your roses and make them last as long as possible.

Here are 11 tips to help you keep your fresh cut roses - whether it's a single rose...a dozen roses...or a rose bouquet - lasting longer...

1. Use a clean vase - one that has been thoroughly cleaned, not just rinsed from a previous use.

2. If you're unable to place your bouquet of roses in a vase as soon as you receive them, place them in the refrigerator to keep them chilled.

If they are boxed roses open the box so they can get some air before you place them in the fridge.

Under no circumstances should you place the roses in the freezer compartment of the fridge.

The ends of your roses should be kept moist until you can place them in a vase. Most roses will come with either a water tube on the end or the ends will be wrapped in wet paper towels.

3. Remove any leaves that will be in the water when the rose is placed in the vase. This will help reduce bacteria in the water.

4. VERY carefully cut the rose stems on an angle with a sharp knife. (Scissors can crush the stem which will restrict movement of water up the stem.)

You should do this either under running water or in a bucket or pail.

The key is to make sure that the stem is submerged while you're cutting the rose stem so no air gets into it. Otherwise, the air will block the rose from getting much needed water and nourishment.

5. Do not remove thorns if your roses come with thorns. Amazingly, your roses will last longer if you don't remove the thorns. Of course, be careful handling the roses when they have thorns on them.

6. Use lukewarm - not cold - water when filling the vase and placing your roses in the vase.

7. Mix the floral food - also called a floral preservative - supplied by the florist according to the instructions on the packet. Retain any left over floral food for later use.

8. Replace the water in the vase every day, if possible. If you're unable to do so every day, change the water at least every two days.

Use leftover floral preservative in the clean water to nourish your roses.

Note that the water should be completely replaced with new water. Topping up the water is not good enough since the old water contains bacteria which will adversely affect your roses.

9. Keep an eye on your roses and the water level in the vase. Top up the water in between replacing the water.

10. Very carefully re-cut the rose stem under water - using a sharp knife - when you replace the water in the vase.

11. Keep your roses out of direct sunlight and away from drafts. Cut roses don't like - and will be affected by - drafts or heat. Place your roses in a cool place at night away from heat sources.

Following these simple guidelines will help ensure your beautiful bouquet of roses lasts as long as possible so you can enjoy your red roses on Valentine's Day and afterwards.
