What Are Senior Day Care Centers?

Senior Day Care Centers offer a group setting in which elderly citizens, who cannot be left alone during the day, can socialize with their peers under the supervision and care of a trained staff.

Participants typically live in the home of a family member who serves as their primary caregiver. They may spend one or more days a week at a Day Care Center. Centers often offer pick-up and drop-off transportation services as a convenience to caregivers.

While there can be a good deal of variety in the programs and activities offered by individual centers, most provide a set of core services which can be modified to meet the needs and capabilities of individual participants.

Typical Services Offered:

  • Arts and Crafts
  • Exercise Classes
  • Nutritional Meals and Snacks
  • Games and Puzzles
  • Group Dancing and Singing
  • Beauty and Barber Shop Service
  • Personal Care Assistance
  • Medication Monitoring and Assistance
  • Special Events and Group Outings into the Community
  • Transportation to and from the Center

Who Can Attend?

Most Centers are designed to serve the daytime needs of Seniors who are disabled, afflicted with early stage Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or other memory disorder, or suffer from chronic depression, or the loneliness of advanced age.

Adult Day Care Centers offer similar services for all disabled adults, eighteen years of age and above.

Brighten Your Senior's Day

Even with the very best in-home care, Seniors may get "cabin fever" from time to time. Sending them off to a Day Facility adds variety to their daily life experience. Besides, many Seniors like to get out of the house for visits with their friends at the local Day Care Center.

Caregivers Need A Break Too

The family member, who provides primary care for their much loved senior, can become overwhelmed by the demands placed upon them. A good day care program can provide a much needed respite from their daily duties - while improving their loved one's quality of life.

Many Centers offer Beauty and Barber Shop services (including Pedicures) for participants. This can be a real benefit for the in-home caregiver, who otherwise would be responsible for providing these services.

Day services are a "win-win" proposition for family caregivers and their senior loved-ones as well!

More Affordable Than Most Other Options

Day care centers provide an attractive, more affordable, alternative to expensive professional in-home caregivers, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. Many Centers offer reduced fees for qualifying participants who have a limited budget.

Is There A Senior Day Care Center In Your Area?

I'm hoping to hear from anyone interested in senior caregiver issues, respite care, or day care services for the elderly. If you know of a center in your area, please tell me all about it (or post the the URL of their website). I might be able to feature your Center on this lens.
