Senior Home Care Services

What Options Do You Have?

A home is a place where you can feel comfortable. It's a place where you have independence and a sense of dignity. A home is where you live your life and where your memories are stored. And many seniors, despite a need for assistance with daily living tasks, don't want to leave the place that they know and love.

Senior home care services can offer seniors a chance to stay right where they are. There are many agencies now that can provide non-medical senior home care services for your loved one, so they can stay home and still receive the attention they need.

There are many options available for home care because not everyone will require the same level of care. You might consult a medical profession, or simply take the time to do a "needs assessment" on your own, but it is important to determine clearly what services you might need.

The following are all non-medical services that assist individuals with their daily living activities:

Activity groups - These are organized get-togethers or outings that allow seniors to experience social interactions with others while playing games, going on trips, going shopping, or even just heading out to see the sights.

Respite Care - Sometimes if you have been the primary care giver for a loved one for an extended period of time, you and the recipient may find yourselves in need of a change. A trained caregiver will take over for you on a temporary basis, which could last from a couple hours to a number of days.

Homemaker Services - Some senior services, like this, are meant to simply help with some of the daily chores that need to be done. This could include help with the cooking, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, etc.

Companionship - Sometimes a person just needs to hear a friendly voice. Companionship could include a visit, a call, or a day spent watching TV together.

Personal Care - These are senior home care services for helping with daily living activities, which means assisting with bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, socializing, getting in and out of bed, taking medications, etc.

Live-in Help - When the recipient needs round the clock support but the caregiver is not in a position to provide it in person, this could be a good option. In exchange for room, board, and probably a salary, a person will live in the home and provide non-medical support.

Of course, before you settle on any of these senior home care services, it is vitally important that you also consult with the senior family member. This is, after all, about making them feel like their home is still their home. A stranger who is there too often might not be the right answer. But if you are able to come to a consensus, home care is one of the best options available for families who want to provide support and care in the comfort of their home.

Home is where your heart is. Home is where you hang your hat. But mostly, home is where you can feel safe and receive the attention you need.

Universal Health Care?

What does it mean to you?

We should not go to a universal health care system.

I was talking to a friend a while back about socialized medicine or universal health care. He is from Canada, which has universal health care, and he is all for it. How it works is if you pay taxes you have health care. The tax is a flat rate for everyone. Sounds good right? Then he told me a story about when he broke his arm while in Canada. After breaking his arm in a motorcycle accident he went to the hospital to have it looked at but because it was not a severe injury they told him he had to wait for them to fix it. The hospital was busy at the time taking more severely injured people and so they sent him home. After 6 weeks he was able to go back and they fixed his arm, 6 weeks! It didn’t cost him a dime but he waited for it so I think universal health care isn’t a good idea.
