The Favorite Places of Squidoo Writers

I have many favorite places - my backyard gazebo, Tuscany, Oregon - to name a few.

What is it about a place that makes it special?

Having lived in and traveled to many different places, I have often wondered about this. I believe that a sense of community and connection are big factors in whether we feel bonded to a place.

You will find below a diverse and delightful group of articles on favorite places written by Squidoo writers. We hope you enjoy them and that they make you think about your favorite place!

Definition of Place

On her Importance of Place Blog , Marilyn Finnemore defines PLACE as...

"A space -- whether it's a city, a small town, a home, a country township, a work environment, on-line, or within oneself -- that is an integral part and an extension of the natural world around it, yet reveals the individuality of those who reside there and allows people to interact meaningfully to create a deep sense of belonging."

Elizabeth Mackay's favorite place is also in England where she lives. She writes, "I have lived almost all my life in the beautiful Culm Valley, mostly in the parish of Culmstock. It is a green valley rising gently to green hills. Devon has lots of small hills and high hedgebanks which give the countryside its distinctive quality of beauty." You can tell that she loves this place.

Atlantic Beach N.C. ~ My Dream by drifter0658

Alex says, "The reasons that Atlantic Beach N.C. is special to me are as numerous as the grains of sand that line one one footprint on the beach. From the lack of one hotel after another lining the beachfront to the dunes that separate the beach from the non-assuming homes and rental condos, and from the relatively uncrowded sands to the few weather worn restaurants, Atlantic Beach is the perfect place to unwind for a few days or spend a lifetime."

The History of Pompei by charlino

Charlino takes us back in time to the city of Pompei in Italy. She says, "When one hears the word, "Pompei," immediately one's mind remembers history and the images that accompanied the word. Pompei was one of the cities destroyed by Mount Vesuvius, literally buried under volcanic lava and ash for centuries prior to being discovered in 1700s. The volcano is still active today."

Exploring a Sense of Place

Reconnect with the place where you live.

Exploring a Sense of Place is a program that began in 2001, inspired by Wendell Berry's quote above and the disconnect between our human culture and the world it overlies.

While most of us recognize where we live by its cities, buildings, places of business, even sport teams, how many of us identify with and understand the beauty, wonder and actual functioning of the natural ecosystem which supports us, and of which we are a part? We believe there is wisdom in the idea that rootedness in place is the most important and least recognized need of the human soul.
