Sensitive skin care is gentle, safe, hypoallergenic and fragrance-free.

Is your skin often irritated, red, inflamed, itchy, or sore? Do you have trouble finding skin care and makeup that doesn't sting? If your skin is chronically dry or acne-prone, does the problem seem to get worse when you try to treat it with over-the-counter skin care products? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you might have sensitive skin.

To some degree, everyone's skin is sensitive. That's why even the most basic skin care routine should include gentle cleansing once or twice a day, regular sun protection, and extra moisture or oil control as needed.

For some of us, though, sensitive skin is a more severe and persistent condition. Allergic reactions, certain chemicals in skin care products, and environmental irritants are a few things that can be especially troublesome for people with sensitive skin.

Sensitive skin needs specialized skin care: hypoallergenic, fragrance-free products with no harsh chemicals. This page features sensitive skin care tips, recommended skin care products for sensitive skin, an introduction to organic and natural skin care, and the story of how I learned to treat my skin with compassion.

Natural Skin Care

Natural and organic skin care can provide gentle, soothing relief for sensitive skin.

Note: many thanks to Tiffany for drawing my attention to this issue. I've used my own words here and consulted other sources, but she should be credited for educating me about the possibly harmful effects of certain chemicals. Please visit my lens on green skin care for more advice and tips on going green.

Why should you choose all-natural skin care products? Certain artificial ingredients are not only bad for your skin, but also potentially unsafe for your body. These include sodium lauryl sulfate, synthetic fragrances, and parabens.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is what creates the lather in foaming cleansers. It is an irritant that can cause rashes and inflammation. That's the last thing you want if you have sensitive skin. I always thought lather was necessary for proper cleansing, but it's not true! You can get your skin clean with products that do not produce any lather.

Parabens are preservatives that act like estrogen, a naturally occurring hormone. Estrogenic activity in the body is associated with some forms of breast cancer. Any product that contains parabens will have one or more of the following in their list of ingredients: methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, or benzylparaben (source: United States FDA, 2006.) In spite of widespread concern about a possible link between parabens and breast cancer, the FDA's position is that products containing these preservatives are safe.

If you want to avoid exposure to parabens, make sure you check the list of ingredients on all skin care products. Some products labeled "natural," "all-natural" and/or "organic" may still contain parabens.

Sensitive Skin Symptoms

Sensitive skin can mean many different things. For some people it is related to allergies, and the main symptoms are frequent hives, redness and itching. Others have chronically dry, tight skin that becomes easily chapped and cracked, especially in cold weather. Adult acne and rosacea (redness, flushing and inflammation) can also be related to skin sensitivity.

Sensitive Skin Care Crucial Step: Moisturize!

Hydration is necessary for sensitive skin protection, healing and renewal.

A good moisturizing system is absolutely key for sensitive skin. Keeping your skin hydrated helps to protect it from environmental irritants and toxins.

In my experience it's not as easy as you might think to find the right moisturizing lotion, cream or serum for your particular type of sensitive skin. You might have to try a few different kinds, and be ready to rinse them off quick if they sting.

As with all other skin care products, opt for fragrance-free moisturizers. If you're on a budget, Cetaphil makes an excellent moisturizing lotion that won't burn a hole in your pocket.

Fortunately, most of the higher-priced moisturizing lotions come in trial sizes or offer special savings when sold online. In specialty skin care stores, you can usually try out a moisturizer before you buy it.

Cetaphil Fragrance Free Moisturizing Lotion, 8-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 3)

Cetaphil skin care products are consistently recommended by dermatologists for all skin types, but they are especially good for sensitive skin. This lotion is lighter than Cetaphil skin cream, which makes it a good choice for summer skin care (most people need less intensive hydration during the summer). It is easily absorbed and free of lanolins, parabens, and fragrances that can irritate sensitive skin.

My Struggle with Sensitive Skin

Here's how I arrived at my current approach to skin care.

In this picture my skin is pretty good, but it hasn't always been that way.

I have very fair, delicate skin that tends to break out in hives, itchy red patches, and painful red cysts. These breakouts happen mostly on my face, neck and upper chest. When my skin is at its worst, there are times when I am too self-conscious about my appearance to be able to go out and have fun.

I'm not sure what causes the hives and itching, as I have no known allergies or other autoimmune problems. The cysts may be some form of acne, but they are not spread over large areas like in severe cystic acne.

There's a lot I don't know about what is causing my symptoms, but I have identified some of my triggers and found several things that help.

I used to try to cover the inflamed areas with concealer, but it always stung when I applied it. I'd grit my teeth and try to ignore the pain, thinking it was worth it in order to prevent anyone from seeing what my skin really looked like. When I washed off the makeup at the end of the day, I would see that it had made the irritation and swelling a lot worse. I'd look in the mirror and think: I'm hideous. This will never go away. What I need is a permanent face transplant.

I still have those thoughts sometimes, but I've learned to adopt a new attitude towards my skin: compassion.

Skin Care and Compassion

Sensitive skin needs compassionate care.

I've stopped trying so hard to eradicate the flaws that I felt were ruining my life. Instead, I focus on treating my skin gently and encouraging it to heal.

How I look in the mirror doesn't matter all that much. What's really important is how my skin feels.

All that staring in the mirror and stressing out over my appearance could not have been helpful, especially since stress is such a common trigger for skin problems.

Hormonal factors have been important in my case as well. Since I started on the birth control pill Ortho Tri-Cyclen (generic name: Tri-SprintTec), my skin is less inflamed and the cysts are much less frequent. I continue to struggle with hives and itching, but they are easier to manage now that the degree of inflammation is so much less.

Acne Skin Care for Sensitive Skin

Gentle acne treatments that won't irritate sensitive skin.

If you struggle with both sensitive skin and acne, look for acne treatment products labeled "for all skin types" or "safe for sensitive skin."

The usual soaps, foaming cleansers, toners, and facial scrubs that people with normal skin use are often too harsh for sensitive skin. I suggest choosing products that are labeled as non-irritating, dermatologist- recommended, "non-comedogenic" (won't clog pores), "gentle," "pure" and/or "mild," "hypoallergenic," and "fragrance-free."

Very informative lens. Just to add on your very useful lens, with the technology today we have a choice not to get ourselves baked under the sun if ever we want to get a tan. Protecting our sensitve skin from the sun's harmful UV Rays, avoiding skin cancer while having a perfect tan is the way to go.

Sunless tanning products, self-tanners, or tanning extenders: These home products are generally available over the counter and can give your skin a tanned look without exposing it to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and are commonly sold as creams, gels, lotions and sprays you apply to your skin. The active ingredient in most sunless tanning products is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). Sunless tanning products typically go on clear, and you might see results after about an hour. Full color appears within eight to 24 hours. Some products contain a tint, which darkens your skin right away.

Sensitive Skin Care Tips

Please add your own!

Strategies for keeping your sensitive skin healthy, clear and calm.

Avoid exposure to skin irritants.

Everyone is different; it's important to know your personal triggers for skin irritation and do your best to protect yourself.
If you aren't sure what triggers your skin symptoms, try keeping a daily record of your skin's condition and see if you notice any connections to what you may have been exposed to.
For example, you might discover that your skin flares up whenever you use a certain detergent, eat spicy foods, or drink alcohol.2 points

Use fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products.

In addition to choosing facial cleansers and other skin care products with these labels, look for them on laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids, hand sanitizers, body lotions, sunscreens, bar soap, and air fresheners.
Natural and organic products are a good choice for many people with sensitive skin. Environmentally conscious retailers sell a wide variety of all-natural, 100% pure items. Below, check out my list of links to online stores where you can find these product lines.2 points

Be sure to drink enough water.

Keeping your body hydrated is essential to maintaining the right balance of moisture and resilience in your skin. Water flushes out toxins and aids in skin cell renewal.1 point

Vitamin E is your friend.

I buy Vitamin E oil in bottles of capsules. When my face is on fire and every other product stings, I cut open a couple of the capsules and apply the oil directly to my skin. It soothes the pain and aids healing.1 point

Make sure there's enough oil in your diet

I mean olive oil and so forth. Seriously: good for your skin.1 point
