All starts with RESEARCH, like always in Internet Marketing.

You have to get a hungry niche first, some segment where people really buy products. You can find this doing 2 things.

FIRST - see what's HOT, and SECOND find great keywords in that hot niche.

What's HOT can be a lot of things, a great way to start is to look at problems which people have and need to resolve. Check out what people search for at Amazon, eBay etc. In general you can research the PRINT MEDIA to get niche ideas. If there is a magazine for a special target group available, then there is money to make in this niche.

And a lot of competition in Internet means - There's are a lot of business opportunities, or in other words, sales, to make. So don't worry too much about competition at this point.

Where you really have to digg are the keywords you should use to build and optimize your page for. Those search terms (search terms = niche = keywords, that's all the same) shouldn't be too broad like "make money" or "golf".

There are simply too many sites indexed for broad keywords, many already optimized, and you have very few changes to get a good ranking. It's NOT impossible but it takes time and needs some special tricks like including RSS, automated link building, article marketing and bookmarking etc..

You should find long tail Keywords, like "make money with email marketing" or "tiger woods golf swing tips" etc. (only examples).

You have to find those terms which have a low competition and a high search volume. It's not easy but think about including words like -buy, -review, - download, -purchase online etc. , what target the traffic you will get to the end of the buying cycle, what helps to make sales. Or you can add a local city name like New York, Austin etc. to narrow down the competition, but only if your offer is locally.

The green bars indicate if there is traffic or not, and how much competition you have. Over the Wordtracker tool you get actually a ratio data between searches and competition. Google TRANDS can give you this as well.

After you have your Keywords you go and research ALL what you can find in this niche. In respect to your competitor's you visit all sites, subscribe to their newsletters, see what they write, what they offer (gifts/bonuses) how is their site designed, colors, pictures etc.

About your future clients, go in the niche to FORUMS, or MySpace or Facebook and try to find out a pattern of their biggest problems. Forums are a great place to get information about clients and if you find out what they want, you just have to deliver a solution tailored to this problem to them.
