Tips For SEOs And Lensmasters

How to create a really tempting lens? Which are the best strategies to spread it? In these months I´ve been working hard looking for answers to these questions. And I´m still looking. I do believe in knowledge sharing, therefore I believe it´s a good idea to start sharing my experiments. This lens is going to be always updated with links to new lenses and with little tips for the most regular readers. Above all, I´m going to open specific guestbook modules and duel debates about specific subjects. In this way i am going to provide more details about some topics in order to collect your suggestion. If you think that a focus is needed about a specific aspect of lensmaking, please share your comment. I´m also going to collect some external resources using other lensmasters´ experience. So... let´s go!!!

Good Manners, First Of All

Let me introduce myself, before starting to discuss about SEO and Lensmaking

Preamble

This lens is the first of a group of four which is going to analyse the search engines optimization tecniques. At the bottom of the lens you will find a sort of program and links to the other lenses. Let's start watching a video. Telling the truth, the following one is not a real tip but only a 30 seconds video. IMHO is so cute...

The Five "W"

There are only three "W" to define the world wide web. To speak about a topic in a complete way we need five of them: who, what, where, when and why

The rules of squidoo

All we know who it is. We are talking about Squidoo. Let's start with an excerpt taken from Wikipedia just to learn something about its creation and about how, where and when:

Squidoo is a community website that allows users to create pages (called lenses) for subjects of interest. Squidoo had 1.5 million hand-built lenses as of October 2010. Development on Squidoo started in 2005, launching a beta testing period in October of that year. The launch team consisted of Seth Godin, his book editor Megan Casey, former Fast Company employee Heath Row, Corey Brown, and Gil Hildebrand, Jr. The site came out of beta testing two months later and reached 100,000 lenses within the first six months.

These were only a few notes. If you wish to know more, jump directly to the Squidoo WikiPage

And Last But Not Least: Why?

The most important question is "why" we are writing on Squidoo

There are two possible choices: earn directly from Squidoo or get SEO advantages for external websites. This choice will substantially influence the strategies we need to follow when building a lens. In the first case we only deal with traffic generation on the lens, while in the second case, it is critical that you generate traffic from the lens and build a solid backlinks strategy from Squidoo towards your websites.

The Ceshire CatAlice: I was just wondering if you could help me find my way.
Cheshire Cat: Well that depends on where you want to get to.
Alice: Oh, it really doesn't matter, as long as...
Cheshire Cat: Then it really doesn't matter which way you go.

So first of all let's concentrate on why we're on Squidoo, what is our goal. After deciding where to go, we can figure out which way to go.

This lens will not deal with making money on Squidoo, it is only about techniques for traffic generation. If you have decided to use Squidoo in order to earn money, I suggest to read lenses written by lensmasters which are more experienced than me in this specific topic.

SEOs Vs. Casher

Actually, the difference is vaguer. For a better understanding, in this lens we will use the term "casher" to identify those implementing strategies that aim to increase the traffic on the lens to make money on Squidoo. On the other way, we will call SEOs those strategies that want to create backlinks and generate traffic to their own websites, external to Squidoo.

Your Money Or Your SEO!

Is Squidoo a proper tool for SEOs or an income source? This is the first choice.

For money o for SEOObviously Squidoo can be used just for fun. In this case, this Duel Debate module is not for you (but the rest of the lens absolutely is).

For all the others, can you let me know what do you think about?

For Seo or For Cash?

gallyfrey says:

for SEO... and works

greenlungsofpoland says:

Here for traffic i can sell from my website but i cannot generate the traffic Squidoo offers me for free without spending mega $$$

mennella says:

The weight of backlinks on Squidoo is quite independent, purely in terms of SEO, from the popularity of the lens. But the traffic generated by the lens toward your sites is strictly connetted. And this is a SEO value.

OutbackJack says:

I originally came to Squidoo for back links so a SEO tool for me. I still can't find a product that sells on Squidoo. My big question is this, Do I have to get my Lens really popular first, for it to become a good/important back link that Google will like and thus improve the status of my websites?

The Other Chapters

learning seoAs I said earlier, this lens is part of a group of four in which i will try to give an overview about the steps to follow, when publishing a lens. The aim is to adhere as much as possible to the Search Engine Optimization logic. If you are a bit convinced about the way I am trying to deal with the subject, please keep on reading the other chapters. Obviously, if you liked it, you can also "squidlike" this lens, share it in social networks and leave a message in the guestbook.
