Not Showing Up in the Search Engines?

Does your site show up in the search engines? If not, what you need is an SEO firm. But not every SEO firm is the same. In fact, in my opinion, this is an industry you need to be very careful in. There are some companies who claim that they can get you indexed by 200 different search engines for a one-time fee of $199. Then, on the other side of the spectrum, I know of companies who will charge you more than $10,000 a month just for consultation and recommendationson how you can optimize your site. Are either of these scenario's a good bargain? Absolutely not. Getting indexed in 200 search engines is absolutely unecessary. What's important is that you're in the top 3 search engines, Google, Yahoo, and MSN. If your site is in these engines, you'll get indexed by any of the others. And do you have to pay to get indexed in these search engines? Absolutely not, so don't think you have to pay for it. What you need to be looking for in a search engine optimization firm is credibility, honesty, and customer service. Take a look at what they have done for their clients. Look at their reporting. Make sure they are getting high quality links. Make sure they are doing keyword research and optimizing your site with it. Make sure they have a good form of web analytics so that they can be tracking which keywords are actually converting etc.

Search Engine Optimization

The Basics

1. If you don't know what keywords you are trying to target you might as well be trying to find a needle in a haystack. Keyword research is one of the best ways to start doing seo for any site.
2. So you know what keywords you want to target. Great. Are those keywords found in your Title, Meta tags, H1 and h2 tags, the body of your page, internal links, alt tags and image descriptions and file names?
3. Inbound links to your site from other quality, relevant sites are like votes for your web site, telling the search engines that you are the authority on such and such keywords.
4. If you are trying to do all of your seo by yourself, you will almost certainly miss something that an unbiased, critical seo firm will pick up on and start helping your site convert traffic into sales.

The Value of an Inbound Link

A vital part of site optimization is something that doesn't effect the actual content or layout of a site. This is the part of getting inbound links. An inbound link is something that allows search engine spiders to find and rank a site. You can look at it like every inbound link being a vote for the site.

There are many ways to get inbound links but one of the best ways to start is by getting the site listed in various web directories. Some good directories to get listed in are www.dmoz.org, Yahoo, Seven Seek, Site Sift and v7n.

While dmoz.org is free, the others I listed require a submission fee. With the exception of Yahoo, the submission fees are small and always worth it in the end. Being listed in v7n and these other directories is money well invested as a site will get additional traffic and will be more easy to index by the search engines.
