Introducing Search Engine Optimization
"If you build it they will come" does not apply to websites or lenses. They MAY come once they know it exists, so how can you help people realize you exist and be what they're looking for?
Optimizing your lens for search engines means writing they type of content that:
A. makes it easy for search engines' automatic systems to get you in their index
B. makes other people want to refer to you as a quality resource, therefore increasing the number of links to your lens, therefore making the search engines think, "Well, if so many people think this is great, we should too!"
Squidoo helps you easily optimize your lens by offering many easy ways for you to write tags/keywords and phrases to get you found, and promote your lens authentically and thus create links back to your lens (known as backlinks).
Confused yet? Read on to break it all down. You'll be an SEO expert in no time!
Unique valuable content
Useful
Unique
Updated
Does your content offer value to someone? Is it useful?
Is it unique? Is it something we can't find anywhere else?
Is it updated and relevant to recent events? Stale content doesn't perform well.
Content that fits the UUU criteria creates a magical attraction with readers. I don't know any lenses that are useful, unique, and updated that don't become instant hits when shared with others. This is often a challenge to master, especially for lensmasters that came to Squidoo under the false impression it was an affiliate marketing, mlm, or get rich quick site. Squidoo is first and foremost a dedicated place to share quality content. We hold charities dear to our hearts, and lensmasters have the potential to make a little extra cash for charities or themselves. Everything else is a bonus; content is king.
You can learn more about writing content with our Content Mentor, Barkely.
Worried about plagiarism? Keep in mind that we don't allow copy and pasted content on Squidoo. Learn the differences at Is it Plagiarism?
Keywords and Key Phrases
The easiest way to get traffic to a Squidoo lens is to make it about a phrase lots of people are looking for, but of course, if it isn't also a topic you're truly passionate about, this will backfire. If you've been able to create a popular UUU lens, bonus!
Don't fall into the bad advice of stuffing your lens full of keywords or adding keywords that are popular or not relevant. Search engines are smarter than that, and more importantly, your readers are smarter than that. You'll instantly lose credibility and could even find your lens flagged as spam or junk.
DO take some time to capitalize on the unique pitch your lens has. There are thousands of lenses and websites for the keyword "wedding" but yours may be one of just a few to show up for "seafoam green wedding colors."
If you get stuck, reverse your thinking style. What would YOU look for in order to find a lens like this?
Tagging tips
- The primary tag of your lens will make your lens end up on top of the whole list of lenses that use that tag. That is, unless the lensrank of your lens is over 100,000. It's good to find a very popular tag to use as a primary tag, as long as not too many lenses are using it as their primary tag.
- Choose tags similar lenses are using, not just the tags you think would fit. In general it's best if at least 4 other lenses are using that tag.
- Check tag pages to see if your lens can come on the first page of it based on it's likely lensrank. Use tags where you CAN get your lens on the top 20 for that tag page.
- Create one tag unique to your lenses. This could be your proper name or your lensmaster name if it's not a keyword. This will help your own lenses show up in the 'Explore related pages' bit at the right side of the lens.
- Squidutils uses primary tags to categorize lenses. You will get your lenses some extra links by using a primary tag that's used by at least two other lenses in the category your lens is listed in.
- Don't use more than about 20 tags.
I don't expect you to get all this right. If you don't, please do make sure you don't use orphan tags: tags that nobody else is using. Those really don't help your lenses at ALL.

Titling your lens
Titles can be tricky. Sure, there's the easy way out.All about Grapefruit
Pogo Sticks
My Dog Rosie
Boring! Does that really describe your lens? Does it make potential readers want to read more? Does it tell people, "Pick me! I'm different, I have just the unique information you're looking for."
Another no-no is a vague lens title; something that would make an edgy novel title won't necessarily be good for your lens.
There are a few titling tricks readers love.
1. Numbers: 101 Dalmations, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Six Sigma. We like numbers
2. How to: How to Teach Kids to Fish, How to Slip-proof your Bathroom, How to Build a Finch House
3. Personal stories: Surviving My Heart Attack, My Time in Iraq, How I Live with MS

If you're new to SEO and want to continue to successfully promote products and stories online, learning the SEO basics is a must. As with anything, not all advice is good advice. There are a lot of bad ideas floating around; some techniques are actually spammy, junky, and can ruin your reputation (even get your IP blocked from sites that can help you!) Learn how it works and proceed with caution.
Getting visitors involved is GOOD SEO

Some more mentor lenses related to SEO
Why isn't my lens indexed yet?
Aka: how to get your page indexed in google, yahoo, bing etc.
In other words: The way to get your lens indexed in google is to build links TO your lens.
This can be done through posting on squidu, building a blog and linking it there etc: all the classic ways to get links to your content.
But wait: are you SURE your lens isn't indexed yet? The only way to be sure is to copy paste the URL ( http://www.squidoo.com/spiritualitys-lensography or something) into google. Your lens should be the first result.
If not try: site:http://www.squidoo.com/spiritualitys-lensography That way you should ONLY get your lens. Google will tell you if it doesn't know it exists.
Most people who say their lens isn't indexed really mean that when they google the title, their lens doesn't show up. This only means your lens doesn't RANK yet. Not quite as serious, though still frustrating. However, the cure is the same: build more links TO your content.
Still not convinced? Read my article about an indexing experiment.
How do I submit my lens to google? (or yahoo or bing)
Common SEO mistakes
The first is impatience. While you should definitely do your best to promote your content, it can sometimes take a while for the traffic to come. Even when it does come traffic will probably, if you're doing well, continue to grow. That means that just because your lens doesn't get traffic in the first month, that doesn't mean it's a failure. It just means it doesn't get traffic.
The second mistake is, in my opinion, worse: deleting content. I see people delete content that has been linked to. Even if that lens is never going to get more than one visitor a week, if it has links from outside your own account, keep it in. Those links (even one is enough) helps your OTHER lenses rank higher. Even if your lens does NOT get links from outside your account, it is still content that google has indexed. If nothing else it is useful for the links it provides to your other content.
If you decide that your content is better off on your own site, don't delete the lens that hosted it. Instead you should keep up the description and link back to the new place it's hosted. That gives your new website it's first backlinks. And while you're at it: why not keep up an amazon module as well. Who knows, you might even still sell something.
Backlinks = links to your web properties.
My SEO and Online marketing blog
Fetching RSS feed... please stand byLearning SEO from the experts
I learned SEO doing it, and reading many SEO blogs. Counting today I find that I'm only following five now. I count on those five to keep me up to date on the main things that matter.
But if you want to just hold a book and read through something that goes into details, I found you a book by one of the SEO rockstars. Well, he's a co-author: Rand Fishkin. He helps companies build links, so he knows what's he's doing. Link building is also probably the hardest aspect of SEO and the one most lensmasters would rather ignore.
Not that this book is only about link building: it goes into all aspects of SEO. You'll come away from reading this with a sense of why I give the tips I give - and therefore better motivated to implement them. You'll also learn things that in my newbie lenses I don't get around to sharing.

- Excellent Post. There is no better description than this for using squidoo as one of your primary sources of digital marketing.
As for the Panda Update - EmpowerLiberty - This article clearly defines rules of wiritng and using squidoo, which off course means google loves your content and network.

- Yes, article still works, and will continue to work. This of course assumes that your articles aren't junk to begin with. Individually written and submitted articles still produce valuable backlinks, and this isn't likely to change any time soon. It is certainly better to have your articles on more trusted article sites like Ezine articles rather than on new ones or ones that have all sorts of junk on them. The bottom line with Panda is that the Google PR is still a great rule of thumb. If a site has some PR, a backlink from it somehwere is a good thing.

- SEO is the way we make a website search engine friendly. Proper SEO is not just about link building or generating backlinks for your site. It also includes on-site optimization wherein you measure the keyword density, optimize the meta-title, meta-description, meta-keywords ...etc.

The hardest thing about SEO for me at least is getting backlinks. This is really a full time job if you ask me, but now I have outsourced link building to Link Dominators, and it is well worth the money.

- As I said under 'link to your content' - do blog about your lenses. As for blogging about your blog... that can become a bit circular. I'd advise making a lens about the topics you've blogged about and then linking to the blog - and link back from the blog to the lens.

- Honestly I often forget to edit the lensmaster bio. The standard one should have the info you would like to show on most of your lenses. In my case that's about me and my main niche: spirituality. I do think that's very important: for visitors as well as search engines.
For individual lenses outside your main niche it's an extra opportunity to create unique content targeted at your niche. So explain why you made that page, why you love that topic, what your personal relationship with it is.
How important is it? As important as the rest of the content of your lens. Less important than the title and tags. But content, title and tags are really the threesome any lens needs.

- Wow this new "notify me when new comments are added" is great! Blogs should have this. Anyway, spirituality is right. I would like to be able to make an rss feed of a tag so I'd see (1) all that are currently extant and (2) when new lenses with that tag are added.

- Katinka, do you recommend any books [not ebooks] for SEO help and SEO marketing tips? I know I see a lot of ebooks and regular books through Amazon -- but wonder if it is necessary to buy those books or can we garner all the helpful information we need from online resources such as your lenses and blogs? Congratulations on your accomplishments!

- I've never bought a book about this in my life. In general I do think the main points have stayed the same through the last 4 or 5 years though. I keep up with 5 SEO blogs right now. That's it. I used to keep up with more, but I would get the same information several times.
Here's the blog names: SEO book, Search Engine Land, Search Engine Round Table, Official Google Webmaster Blog and Jim Boykin of We Build Pages Link Building Blog.
I'll set up an RSS module for all of them at the bottom here. And I'll see about a physical book for you. If an ebook were an option, it'd definitely be Aaron Walls SEO Book. He has a marketeers perspective on SEO, which would work well for you I think.
