SEO Web Site Development
The aim of every website is to get to number one in the search engines.
The way to do that is with SEO (search engine optimization). But you need to do it right.
Get your SEO wrong and your efforts will all have been in vain. Get it right and you'll be rewarded with all the traffic you can ever handle.
First Things First
You'll need the following before you start:
Next, decide the words you want to target for your website.
You won't be able to be in the number one position for every possible combination of words that relate to your website. That's simply not possible.
Instead, your aim is to feature high for a good number of your chosen keywords.
You're looking for words that people actually search for - not industry jargon unless your whole industry uses it.
The best way to find out what people are searching for is to use a keyword research tool. This will tell you how many people are searching for any given keyword and how much competition you're facing. As a general rule, the less words that are searched for the more competition. So "weight loss" will have much more competition than "low carb diet weight loss".
There are two top quality tools that offer a great way to research keyword popularity:
- Wordtracker which is a subscription service, although there is also a limited free trial. This is the service I personally use.
- Keyword Elite. This comes in especially useful if you want to generate lots of keywords for services like Google AdWords. Or if you don't like paying the recurring fees that Wordtracker charges - this is a one-off payment instead.
You're now almost ready to start the process of SEO Web Site Development.
Your next decision is what type of web site do you want to develop?
Probably the easiest way to set up your website is by using a blog such as Wordpress. This is a one click install with most modern hosts.
Trouble is that the default installation of Wordpress isn't very search engine friendly. There's a short tutorial on performing SEO on Wordpress blog below but
here is a much fuller tutorial.
The other alternative is to build your own website. There are lots of software programs out there and much will depend on whether you are developing the site yourself or using a website developer.
If this is your first time developing a website, then I'd suggest using a program such as
Xsite Pro which takes care of a lot of the infrastructure of your site and has a built in system to check that your SEO is up to scratch.
Whatever you use to develop your web site, make sure the following SEO basics are followed:
- Every page needs a descriptive title - this will be displayed in the search engines once you get your site indexed, so make it catchy and relevant to your content.
- Make sure you include a meta description tag. Describe the page in this so that the search engines are encouraged to use your description rather than make up one of their own.
- Include a tag that says
<meta name="robots" content="noodp">
so that the search engines don't use the description from the Open Directory if you're lucky enough to get listed there.
- Make sure you have a relevant heading tag with your relevant keywords in it.
- Include relevant paragraphs of text on your page. This sounds basic but search engines can't "see" images or videos like humans. They need text to work out what the page is about. Don't stuff your page full of keywords - write naturally and use synonyms (similar words) to make your page read as naturally as possible.
SEO Blogging Software

There are a lot of choices for SEO blogging software but the one that gets used most often and with best results is the free software called Wordpress.
Most good
website hosts include a tool to automatically install a basic version of Wordpress.
Once you've done that, you need to tweak it so that it is search engine friendly.
More detailed instructions can be
found here but the basics are as follows. You'll need to download the various plug-ins to your computer then upload them to your host:
- Get the Wordpress API key and install Akismet. This isn't completely an SEO technique but it will prevent most of the spam that blogs can attract.
- Install the Optimal Title plug-in so that your blog titles are made search engine friendly.
- Smart Update Pinger intelligently pings the blog search engines.
- Simple Tags allows you to put tags into your blog to indicate what the page is about.
- Share This allows people to add your site to the various social bookmarking sites, giving you more inbound links.
- In the Options tab, select Permalinks. Put this line:
/%category%/%postname%/
in the Custom structure box and make sure the appropriate radio button is selected, then press Update.
- Choose a template that you like from the many freely available Wordpress templates and install it.
Doing just those steps will put you further ahead than most of your competitors. Or get this

Advanced SEO Services

There are two main factors in search engine optimization.
So far, we've dealt with the "on page" factors. These are the ones you can control.
At least as important are the "off page" factors. These are how you are linked to from other sites and are more difficult for you to control.
The search engines like to see "natural" links to your sites.
They have a dislike of anything that could disrupt their rankings, so they don't approve of things such as buying text links from other sites (unless these links are clearly marked as advertising).
They also look for a natural growth in these links over the course of time, which means that although robotic type services - like the ones that claim they'll get you hundreds or thousands of links overnight - are generally speaking bad news.
In no particular order, take a look at the following ideas to build up your inbound link popularity:
- Link directory submitter. This software keeps a list of hundreds of different directories who accept links. It automates the task of finding these directories and keeping track of your URL and link descriptions, but it's still up to you to select the correct folder to submit your site, so it's a natural process.
- Submit articles to the main article directories. Done properly, these spread like wildfire and will increase your backlinks and your traffic.
- YouTube. As more and more people are watching videos, you can use these simple ideas to drive targeted traffic to your website. The videos don't have to be full, professional, television quality. The home-made look often works better.
- Blog commenting. This software allows you to find relevant blogs where you can place comments and gain relevant backlinks. There is some work involved but done carefully, with fairly intelligent comments, it works well. This link goes to a free trial copy.
- Improve your SEO copywriting skills. The better you get at converting your web site traffic from "just looking" into buyers, the more money you'll earn. Copywriting is salesmanship in print and the better you get at it, the more income will flow your way.
More About Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimization (SEO also search optimization) is the process of editing and organizing the content on a webpage or across a website to increase its potential relevance to specific keywords on specific search engines and importantly ensuring that external links to the site are correctly titled and in abundance. This is done with the aim of achieving a higher organic search listing and thus increasing the volume of targeted traffic from search engines.
SEO is one of the key Web Marketing activities and can target different kinds of searches, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.
SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Sometimes a site's structure (the relationships between its content) must be altered too. Bec...
