Sergio Mendes: Bossa Nova, Jazz and Funk
A professional pianist since the age of sixteen, Sergio Mendes is one of the most gifted musical talents to emerge from Brazil. His group performed at parties and night clubs near the Brazilian town of Ipanema, where famed composer and musician, Antonio Carlos Jobim, heard Sergio play. With encouragement from Jobim, Sergio Mendes joined other musicians in Rio who were creating a new musical style that came to be known as Bossa Nova. Sergio Mendes has released over three dozen albums with his signature combination of Bossa Nova, jazz, and funk.
