Serial Experiments Lain is an intriguing anime with a dedicated following. Lain Iwakura is a quiet, withdrawn and seemingly ordinary girl. Her life is turned upside down after a classmate commits suicide and Lain discovers that she is among the few that can communicate with the deceased girl through a computer. As the story unfolds, it becomes apparent that there is much more to the virtual connectivity, or "The Wired" as it is referred to in the series, than meets the eye.

The philosophical aspect of Serial Experiments Lain made this series a bit over top for some viewers. Personally, I think it was very underrated. It ranks among my top anime favorites to this day. Serial Experiments Lain asks questions of life that few feel confident to take on in film or television. It is a deep voyage into the meaning of what our world has become and what it is capable of becoming. To see such a meaningful subject explored in the otherwise simple world of animation is a unique combination.

The Cult of Lain

Image Credit: mwolsonLain Iwakura has relates to a place inside the typical shy, unpopular teen. She goes on a frighting journey to discovery; a journey that unleashes a complexity that gives her a power. It is no wonder, then, that Lain has a very dedicated following.

Check out this forum for a picture of a tattoo that someone got of Lain. There are, undoubtedly, more like this floating around out there somewhere. Lain is a common subject of cosplay, a type of performance art in which participants dress the parts of popular anime characters. Lain has also been the subject of many artist's pieces such as this one by Ryusuke Hamamoto.

The Music of Lain

Image Credit: Chocolate Syrup WafflesI adore the music of Serial Experiments Lain. The opening song, "Duvet," is my favorite. The original soundtrack features music by Nakaido "Chabo" Reichi. A second volume of the original soundtrack was released as well.

There was also a remixed version of the soundtrack, Serial Experiments Lain Soundtrack: Cyberia Mix, with techno DJ mixes of the original songs. Cyberia Mix also had a second volume released like the original soundtrack. Bootleg Bebop Lain was later specially released as a two CD set of small soundtracks from Pioneer.

To Love or Hate Lain

Image Credit: TV TokyoSerial Experiments Lain and the word "weird" often join together in reviews of the series. As I said before, the plot can be a little over the top for some people. Most reviews receive the plot well with comments such as "Serial Experiments Lain might not yet be considered a true classic, but it's a fascinating evolutionary leap that helped change the future of anime" from a 2005 review of the series by Christian Nutt from Newtype USA.

It is one series that managed to push the envelope and shape the future for the world of anime in the 1990's. Whether or not it will be remembered for this is up for debate.
