Seriously Scared of Spiders

I'm afraid Of Spiders - There I said it

I have been scared of Spiders all my life. I suspect it all started when I was in my mother's womb. My Mum was seriously scared of Spiders too. When she and my Father were first married, they lived in a small flat over a Chinese Takeaway and were always plagued with Spiders. Mum couldn't go near them and Dad would just chase them with a rolled up Newspaper.
One night when Mum was about 8 months pregnant (So the story goes) the biggest Spider you have ever seen walked across the living room floor. My Mum screamed and jumped up on the Sofa while my dad proceeded to run round the flat after the darn thing. From then on my phobia was set.

Why are we scared of Spiders?

scared of spidersThere are different theories as to why we are afraid of Spiders.
1 theory is that because there are nasty little critters that bite you and inject lethal poison so it would not be irrational to fear something that could kill you would it? However, Here in the UK we are a lot less likely to come across a poisonous spider. Most of them look mean and nasty but they are much more scared of us than we are of them.
The other theory is that it is a learned behaviour. As with my opening paragraph, My Mum was scared of the things and therefore it stands to reason that Myself and my sisters picked up on that fear and learned that we should be afraid.
The only problem I have with that second theory is that I have 2 children - My son Like me is terrified of the things and like me can not be in the same room as one however big or small. My Daughter on the other hand is not scared of them at all. She would rather they not be around but if there was one in the room she would calmly catch it under a glass and dispose of it outside to go on it's merry way.

What can we learn about Spiders?

I don't think we know or understand enough about Spiders. If we were to learn more about them and which ones were the more dangerous and how we could help the situation so they don't keep coming into the house that would make the fear a little easier to cope with.

A weird obsession

Spider broochAlthough I can't abide Spiders. I am still fascinated by them. When I was younger I had a gorgeous Spider Brooch that i wore all the time. It was my favourite piece of Jewelry.

If I am walking down the street and I spot anything Spider related in a shop window, weirdly I am compelled to stop and look too. I don't understand it really. When I see one for real my whole body freezes completely in fear!

Most common Spiders in the UK

House SpiderThe most common Spider to be found in our homes is this little thing Its called the Tegenaria gigantea or "House Spider"
You know when you are sitting on your sofa on an early autumn evening and out the corner of your eye you thought you saw something move. Then you see it run out from under the TV. If you are me you scream and run out and get your shoes on so you can stomp on it. Thing is it disappears under the sofa then you are frozen waiting for it to appear again.
The Female can grow upto an inch and can live up-to about 4 years (Not in this house)
The Male usually dies after mating.
So with these Nasty little critters, its the woman that rules the roost. You never quite know if they have left the building or not. That is why I like to make sure they aren't going to bother me again.

A Footnote

As I was composing this lens late last night my son came running from his room shouting that there was the largest Spider he had ever seen in there. He tried to get it but it ran under his bed. So He slept on the sofa and now I am too scared to go near his room in case it is lurking still...

Not afraid of spiders. Did enjoy this entertaining lens. It's great! Had to laugh when I got to your Footnote. Guess you will need to build a new room now for your son - that spider took his.
