Foods that Boost Serotonin

What is Serotonin? Serotonin is a chemical that improves the function of your brain in many ways. Research has shown that improved levels of serotonin activity can improve your mood, relieve anxiety and even help control your appetite. Serotonin is not found in foods, but can be released by eating certain foods at certain times, or in certain combinations.

Why am I writing about the foods that boost Serotonin? I have cyclothymic disorder, a low-level bipolar disorder. While hypomanic episodes are usually a phase of increased efficiency, I've also been through mild, moderate and severe depressive episodes. Recently, I went on a "fad" low-carb diet, and I quickly noticed that my mood was declining. I was angry, irritable, and quite depressed. I don't know for sure if it was the diet or not, but I did some research and found out that some carbohydrates improve serotonin activity. The more research I did, the more I realized the foods I eat could very well affect how I feel! I'm excited to share some of the things I've learned about a healthy diet that can include foods that boost serotonin.
