What's happening in the world of SEO?

After having worked in SEO for the past three years, I've learned that SEO never stays the same, and that SEOs often disagree on what's right and what's wrong, in terms of optimizing, linking, and all else SEO. When it comes to search, the real issues are with algorithms that change all the time. Who knows what the search engines are thinking, except the search engines with 100% surety? Nobody.

And so, things are constantly changing. Want to learn what's hot and what's not? Visit often and get the newest issues facing SEOs and make your opinion heard!

What is SEO?

Getting a handle on the easy stuff

When many people think of SEO, they think of some geeky person noodling around with code in the background of the page, of making sure their pages are keyword dense, or of linking externally. Well, I'm here to tell you that SEO is those things, but much more.

SEO is a synergistic system.

It includes on-page factors, such as the keyword density, strategic linking, and site structure.

It includes off-page factors, which is basically linking.

It includes articles, with strategic linking.

It includes blogging, also with strategic linking.

Each of these aspects work together to get your site ranking higher in the search engines, and I'll talk about each one of them.

Today, let's start with keyword density.

It's pretty much dead.

Oh, I know you're probably clinging to the idea that the more you use the keyword the better, but that's become a bad idea. Using a word too much, even more than 2% of your blog post, your web page, or your article is probably too much.

Why?

Because all factors lead to the idea that Google is using latent semantic indexing or LSI. What that means is that Google's spiders aren't just seeing words that are used repeatedly, they're taking the whole context of the written material into consideration when deciding what it's about.

And here's the kicker: If the spiders find your keyword a little too often, they'll see your material as spam.

Nobody wants that! So, try to be a little less obvious about what you're trying to do.

For instance, I write about ADD a lot for Tellman. When I'm writing, rather than use the term over and over, I'll use words like attention deficit, disorder, condition, ADHD, and so on. When I'm done, I take the article to Live-Keyword-Analysis.com and if I see that any word is used more than 2%, I'll use synonyms to take the density down to its appropriate level.

That's a lot easier than trying to stuff articles with keywords, which was always frowned upon, anyway. But the tactic is working. At least it seems to be.

We have no direct proof that Google is using LSI, but several months ago, a patent they applied for included verbiage that indicated that the search engine was moving in that direction. So, I'd rather be ahead of a curve than behind it.

And what? You don't care about what Google wants? Well, you ought to. Google converts better than any other search engine. Period.

So, stop worrying so much about keywords and more about the people that read what you write. That's important for SEO and for popularity. Who wants to waste their time reading material that's stuffed with crap and makes no sense?

Not me.

Good on you, Google. (Maybe.)

How Google Social Search Works

And why you should pay attention

Matt Cutts talks about how social sites will enter into Google's results. With the advent of personalized search, it's definitely something you want to pay attention to.

SEO: Google Caffeine

What It Means for Webmasters

SEO: CaffeineAnyone in search has heard about Google's new technology that is supposed to put Google's indexing into hyperdrive. It's like taking Google to Starbucks for a double espresso, and it will make this very fast search engine even faster.

Who wants to complain about that?

Well... you might, depending on how quickly your pages load. If you have an e-commerce store that is graphics inundated, for example, you want to be sure that your images are compressed and sized to be as small as possible for a faster loading time. Google, it seems, will be taking your load time into consideration when evaluating your rankings in their search results.

Matt Cutts talked about the rollout here if you want to check it out. What Matt says is that the roll out isn't scheduled to happen until after the holidays, so you have some time to get your pages in order. Here are some sites you might be interested in using to evaluate the changes to be made:

Want to see how long it takes to load your page? Check out this site

You can check to see if you have broken images and other issues that would take your page longer to load here.

And here's a very cool article that will help you to shrink other aspects of your site, if they're causing your site to load slowly.

Getting your pages to load faster isn't just for Google. Think of your end user. Nobody likes to wait for anything to load, including me and probably you. If you want your users or buyers to love you, having a slow loading website isn't the way to make that happen.

Don't Sweat the Page Rank

Why page rank doesn't matter

Today, I was over at Digital Point, checking out what was going on and there's a big discussion of a page rank update. People are complaining that their page ranks went up or down for no apparent reason, and it's freaking them out.

But you know, ... Does it really matter?

Here's what matters: Your site showing up in the results pages. That's what matters.

I've said this before: Page rank is a way for Google to play with your head.

If you have PR6, Google decides it hates paid linking and BOOM! PR0. Happened last year.

If you have a PR3, it's better than a PR2... why? You have no more listings today than you did yesterday. Who cares?

What you should watch and care about are these things...
