All-Purpose Goal Setting Tips
Setting goals is a bit different if you're trying to lose weight than if you're trying to build a business. Obviously, there are differences because of the fact that you're trying to accomplish vastly different things. But there are a few things that you can keep in mind for all types of goal setting.

The Magic Lamp:
Goal Setting for People Who Hate Setting Goals

Your goals should always be achievable. You may get very frustrated if you set goals that are far too difficult to reach. You may even give up entirely if your goals are too ambitious.
You should always write your goals down, and keep your list of goals where you can see them often. It's important to keep yourself reminded of your goals, because goals can be easy to toss aside and forget about.
Be sure your goals are quantifiable. It's probably not enough to say, "I want to lose weight." Be specific! "I want to lose 40 pounds and fit into a size 6 dress."

Goal Setting 101 :
How to Set and Achieve a Goal!

When you set personal goals, you should try to set them in a way that makes them as emotional as possible. It's human nature to respond well to emotional things, so it helps to keep your goals tied to emotions.
For example, instead of saying, "I want to lose 40 pounds and fit into a size 6 dress." you might want to tie in some emotion. "I want to lose 40 pounds and fit into a size 6 dress because I'm tired of my co-workers poking fun at me about my weight at the office picnics, and if I were a size 6, I'd be smaller than all of them!" By tying your personal goals to emotions, you're more likely to stick to them.

Career Goal Setting
Setting career goals for ultimate success.
When you decide to set career goals for yourself, it's important to first reflect on exactly what you would like to accomplish with your life. Maybe you don't want to move up the corporate ladder into management. Are you setting the goal of advancing to management just because you think you should? Sure, you might earn more money in management, but will you hate going to work every day?
Goals aren't just about making more money or having more power. Goals are about getting what you want. Remember that. If it's not something you really want, you should NOT have it on your list of goals!Think about what you want to do for the rest of your life. Will you be happy in your current position if you could just make more money at it? Do you want to work for a specific company? Would you eventually like to control the entire company?
Next, you need to think about WHY you want to achieve your goals. Be honest with yourself. Your goals shouldn't be based solely on money. Make sure your decisions are also based on what you think you'll be comfortable doing. Money is important, don't get me wrong! But money shouldn't be the ONLY factor.

Goal Setting for Kids and Teens
Setting goals for kids, middle-school kids, and teenagers.
Goal setting for children is a little different than for adults. Kids don't understand things like risk vs. reward, and "no pain, no gain." They need results.
When children set goals, they need to be very realistic goals. Children need to learn early that they can achieve any goal they set for themselves if they'll only work for it. If their goals are too difficult to attain, they will get frustrated and give up.
The older the child, the more lofty the goals can become. High school students should be setting pretty ambitious goals. Kindergarteners should be setting very simple goals that can be reached quite easily.
