1. Chess from India

Hand Carved Camel Bone

chess set - camle bone from IndiaIt's only fair that we start with India they invented chess. (Go here to read some of the history of your chess set. And, OK, so it's not a wooden chess set, but it's pretty darn cool.

Oh, and, Relax. The bone comes from camels who have died of natural causes so no suffering or slaughter has taken place just so that you and I could go a few rounds of Chess.

Nothing can conceal the craftsmanship and the proficiency of the craftsmen who carry out minute detail work and superb carving on Camel Bone Chess Sets. Normally a bone chess set takes 100-120 man-hours to carve it.

By comparison, working with ivory is easier than bone. Also ivory, because of its milky pure whiteness doesn't need to be cleaned or polished to the extent of a Camel Bone Chess Set. These pieces stand around 10-12cm High, are intricate and feel really nice as they move along the board.

Unlike many wooden chess sets, they also have a natural weight so they sit beautifully on the Chess Board.

Hand Carved Tagua

Tagua Nut Ivory Chess from EcuadorGalapagos Island Chess Set. Made in Equador from Tagua (vegetable Ivory - again, not a wooden chess set, but I promise we will include them below!)). Hand carved chess set pieces depicting Galapagos Island Marine Life.

The Tagua Date Palm grows naturally in small areas down the South American Coast line from Panama to Paraguay, but is most famous in Ecuador.
The nuts take 15 years to grow and are harvested only as they fall, preventing destruction of the precious Tagua Palm.

The result when carved and polished is a truly unique and beautiful hand carved chess piece. The chess pieces are slippery smooth, as hard as marble and have a natural glow.

3. Wooden Chess Set from Madagascar

Inlaid Pallisandre Warrior Chess

Pailisandre Chess from MadagascarAt last, a wooden chess set! this wooden chess set is from Madagascar, an Island off the Coast of Africa. The wild life here is endemic and so are the craftsman.

We picked this chess set because it is a very realistic reflection of Malagasy Culture. Little wooden men with little wooden spears and funny hats (the spears come out of their hands!). Inlaid lemon and rosewood (not drawn, but this wooden chess set is painstakingly laid one tiny piece of wood at a time until the picture is produced) depicting local flora and fauna (click image for a larger view).

The artists in Madagascar are not only very friendly, their wood work is sought after throughout Europe for its high quality and unique appearance.

Teraccotta Inca Chess - Peru

Inca Chess set from PeruInca-Conquistador Chess Set. Hand crafted in Peru. Terracotta ceramics and Peruvian art, hand painted.

Enter the wobbly warrior world of the Inca's. The chess pieces are beautifully and colourfully hand painted. Made entirely of Terracotta, they are weighted but sometimes they wobble!

The board is a simple folding board and again, the art is in the hand painted scenes. This nicely hand painted chess set revisits an ancient conflict using the ceramic craftsmanship for which Peru is famous.

The chess pieces show a rich degree of detail that gives this chess set an authentic feel. Did I mention the pieces may wobble?

5. Chess from China

Khet Laser Chess

Khet Laser Chess Set from ChinaOk, we are on the other side of the spectrum with this one. It's not a wooden chess set, but we could not resist it. KHET is the board game that combines lasers with classic strategy. Players alternate moving Egyptian pieces and each turn ends by firing one of the built in lasers.

As the beam bounces; if it strikes a non-mirrored surface on any piece, Wham! that piece is blown out of the game!

The Eye of Horus beam-splitter splits one laser beam into two when hit by reflecting half of the beam and transmitting the other half right through for twice the strategy and excitement!

With both pieces in play, the beam can be split twice blasting three lasers around the field with one push of the button!

Why would you play a chess where you kindly move the taken piece to the side of the board when you could be blasting into oblivion?

7. Wooden Chess Set from Tunisia

Olive Wood Chess Set

Wooden Chess Set from TunisiaHand Carved wooden chess set from Tunisia using one of the most beautiful woods in the World.

Very solid, and durable wooden chess set. The scrolling edges show off the richness of the olive wood grain. The wooden chess board surface has a fine finish that's silky smooth to the touch. This is the very wood that was used to build the Holy of Holies in Solomon's Temple. Pretty neat, eh?

The veins in this wooden chess set and chess board are a very deep black, brown and cream swirling through the wood like a waterfall coming over the top of the board.

It's just plain pretty is all I can say.
