Meet The Seven Dwarfs: Snow White's Friends In The Forest

Ranked #12,528 in Entertainment, #153,704 overall

Who Are Walt Disney's Seven Dwarfs?

If you are not already familiar with Snow White's Seven Dwarfs, you will be when you leave this page.

You will be a little richer in the history and lore of Walt Disney's first full-length animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and you will have a better idea of exactly who these seven little guys are.

In addition, if you are looking for an easy way to remember their names, you will have a secret memory device for remembering them.

The trick?

To keep track of all seven dwarfs, you must simply remember that there are two that begin with an S, two that begin with a D and three that are 'emotions.'

That is:

Two S's: SLEEPY and SNEEZY,
Two D's: DOPEY and DOC and
Three emotions: HAPPY, BASHFUL, and GRUMPY.

Got it? Good. There will be a test in a minute.

  • DOC, voiced by Roy Atwell, was the unofficial leader of the seven dwarfs. The only dwarf with glasses, he has long white hair and a beard. Presumably the glasses were to make him seem the most intellectual of the bunch.

  • SNEEZY was played by Billy Gilbert. When he sneezes, he really sneezes and can move even heavy objects that are in his path when he lets a sneeze loose. He spends much of his time trying to block a sneeze (with his finger under his nose) but you know, he really cannot help sneezing. He once said, "I can't tell. When you gotta, you gotta." He, too, sports long white hair and beard.

  • DOPEY was played by Eddie Collins and 'voiced' by Mel Blanc, although he never spoke. He is, as Walt Disney himself said, "nice but sort of silly." Notably, he is the only dwarf without a beard and the only dwarf completely bald. The youngest dwarf, he is considered by many to be both the sweetest and silliest.

  • GRUMPY, voiced by Pinto Olvig, initially does not care for Snow White taking up residence in their home and said, "Angel, ha! She's a female! And all females is poison! They're full of wicked wiles!" Later, however, he leads the other dwarfs to save her. Defintely the grouchiest, he is, in the end, truly devoted to Snow White. He, too, sports long white hair and a beard.

  • HAPPY, played by Otis Harlan, is usually happy and usually seen laughing. He is rather round, with long white hair and beard.

  • SLEEPY, voiced by Pinto Colvig, is the tired dwarf and, lacking in energy, has the least to say of all them. Sports long white hair and a beard and always has a heavy lidded, tired look.

  • BASHFUL was played by Scotty Mattraw. Bashful is the final dwarf in this list and yes, he has long white hair and a beard. He is shy and easily embarrassed, especially when attention is on him and often seen in the typical pose we associate with someone who is shy. However, even a bashful guy can fall for a girl..."She's beautiful. Just like a... angel!"

The 7 Dwarfs Music

On the original, remastered movie soundtrack from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs SoundtrackTwo of my favorite songs from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are sang by the dwarfs themselves. Those songs define the movie and Disney for me. Can you guess what songs they are? If you guessed Whistle While You Work and Heigh-Ho, you guessed correctly.

The Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs soundtrack was released in 1938 and was the first ever commercially available soundtrack. The songs were written by Frank Churchill and Leigh Harline and the score was composed by Paul J. Smith, Albert Hay Malotte and Milt Franklyn.

This is a movie sountrack that is firmly planted in the minds of many like myself who grew up watching Snow White. It has stood the test of time.

The seven dwarfs helped Walt Disney receive his first Oscar. It came, appropriately, in the form of one large and seven 'dwarf' statuettes.

Which Dwarf is the most popular?

An informal survey.

The only reference to the most popular dwarf that I have stumbled across points to Dopey but I know that the answer to a survey in my household would result in a different result than that so, just for fun, let's have an informal survey right here on this page to determine which of Snow White's seven dwarfs is the most popular of them all...someone else closely associated with the dwarfs takes the title of the fairest one of all, despite the objections of the evil Queen.

Did you grow up with the Snow White and her seven dwarfs?

Yep. loved it as a kid - it was (I think) the second movie I ever went to see, and nowadays we watch it regularly with my kids.

Delightful! Thanks for including Walt. I used to wear a "snow white" outfit to work. Every once in a while a true fan would "get" it, and we'd share the fun. LOL!

There never will be a story like Snow-White and the seven dwarfs, just like Cinderella is my favourite, Snow White remains my favourite too.
  • stargazer00 Jan 21, 2011 @ 11:25 am | delete
